This drive is flawless compared to the Seagate and Western Digital external it replaced. The design is sleek and functional, it is a little chunkier than my Seagate and WD but cools much better. The bottom is vented and I would like to think there is a cooling fan behind the vent but I am unsure. Either way after hours of writing data, and encrypting the drive the exterior is just barely warm with no slow down of performance. This is impressive compared to my Seagate which would be hot to the touch after 2-3 hours with a considerable loss of performance. The transfer speed on this drive is also very fast, using the USB 3.0 connection I was writing to the drive at 60mb/ps on average from an internal sata 2 drive. I can't comment on the bundled backup software or the online cloud storage because I formatted the drive out the box. My only complaints about this drive is I would like to sit it on its side but there is no label to tell you which side is up so you don't know rather the drive is upside down or not which if you plan to keep in the vertical position does not apply, and there is no on/off switch so to turn the drive off you have to unplug it. These things may not bother you. Overall I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone who needs fast reliable external storage. By Gtaylor4mayor I just recieved my Hitachi touro desk pro in the mail. While reformatting it for my Mac I ran into a problem that unmounted the drive and it did not show up anymore. (tip for mac users: You have to go into partition and select 1 partition with the 3TB drives. and then format. The bigger drives need to be repartitioned due to the mass space.) I called tech support and was hearing a real person within 2 minutes. Tony the tech guy was very helpful through the process and then explained to me why it happened. Guy knew his stuff. I am currently backing up a ton a files and cant even hear the drive running. and the USB 3.0 is very fast. I recommend this drive not just because of its great build and price but also because of the tech support. 1 phone call and 5 minutes later my problem was fixed. By Kelly Owens this drive is amazing! ive got 1 in my tivo Premiem HD and wow is it fast and good! also have 2 in the Security Camera dvr setup again its not missed a beat!BUT i must warn you now DO NOT USE THIS IN A COMPUTER YOU WILL STORE DATA ON IE DOCUMENTS ETC!!!!! THE REASON FOR THIS IS BELOWThe A/V drives ignore errors, the normal drives will do an error recovery to attempt to get back any data from the platter.When recording video (security cameras etc) you want an A/V drive that will just record whatever you throw at it, and keep going even if it misses a byte or two. An error in a couple of bytes just causes a minor blip in the video stream, but the rest won't stop. On a normal drive it could go into an error recovery mode and stop recording for 10-30 seconds - and this is much worse for security.However if you store documents, a single byte error could corrupt megabytes or even gigabytes of important data.Which you choose depends on your purpose.. but for DVR's, CCTV's Etc ie if its only going to have video on it then this is the kiddie you need! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast, quiet, solid By rsinj My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time. I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price. The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I won't have to rebuild the system drives from scratch. I know that the motherboards in my machines cannot make use of the 6Gb throughput, however, these drives are definitely faster than what they're replacing - older WD drives which indicate they are 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specs on the older drives indicate performance shouldn't be all that different, but it is, and for the better. I won't question it. The drive indicates you can jumper pins 5 and 6 to limit it to 3Gb, but I didn't understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it's working well. WD Blue 1T Drive - So far so good. By Fred Wampler I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow. The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I have loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around 3 weeks I'll assume it will not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I'll update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that a few failures were being reported. Not the long-term ones but the more likely out of the box ones. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain). UPDATE: OK. I put the case back together. The drive is not silent but it is pretty quiet. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Very nice. No problems with the drive at all. Ho Tried different backup system before, but it just never worked well for me. 3 years later, got all these family pictures and we looked for something plug and backup type of system. A Geek's Friend By Chris Rodriguez If you're like me and have a plethora of homeless drives laying around, than this is for you. Drives are getting bigger and bigger while simultaneously decreasing in price. This usually results in keeping the biggest and best setups as your main stay backup external storage volumes. What you end up with after all this upgrading, even if its not so frequent (as in once a year), is drives without a use. Now it would be really wasteful to buy a bunch of extra external cases just to keep all these unused drives in. So this dock makes all those unused drives very useful again, without filling your wall up with warts or your USB slots with endless external drives. This product is not a Thermaltake product as such, it's just rebadged by them. I would have hoped they would have opted to use the more versatile edition which included USB 1.1/2.0 FireWire 400/800 and eSATA, however I imagine they went this route to keep the cost down, as not to many people need the speed of those other faster interfaces. All in all this product is solid, even though its made from plastic its well weighted and doesn't walk or shutter as the drive is in use (even with a 10,000 rpm Raptor drive inserted). The vertical placement of the drive seems to perform well in both allowing gravity to "seat" the drive in place as well as allow for adequate cooling. I would however not recommend you leave a "docked" drive always on as it would not be wise without some sort of external cooling especially when placed on an electronically cluttered desk. The dock serves more as a quick backup tool and allows for convenient incremental storage of critical files, which can then be ejected and stored in a small safe for fire/water protection or in a closet, so as to not be physically connected to the machine 100% percent of the time. Its peace of mind for your photos/videos or other family files that insurance can't pay for. I own two of these docks and have to say that buying this has made my backup regiment a hole lot more viable. Plus who really wants a desktop cluttered with a bunch of external drives when all you have to do is keep naked drives in a drawer/safe with labels taped onto them for offline backup. This dock is so versatile that I was able to use it to recover the game saves on an Xbox 360 that failed due to dreaded "ring of red lights" hardware failure. This is important to note, as this dock was made to handle both full desktop sized 3.5 inch drives as well as the notebook 2.5 inch drives, which the Xbox 360 uses. The only possible weakness of this dock is static discharge, as you are handling the drive without any kind of shielding or covering for the exposed electronics its attached board. To alleviate the risk of possible damage to the drive from static, I'll generally grasp an exposed metal section of my machine prior to attempting to handle a drive to discharge any static I might be carrying. It would also be wise to avoid grasping the drive by its electronics board directly instead holding it by its edges as you would a deck of cards. In conclusion I would have to say this is a great product at a great price. But I bought two, and put in a RAID1 mirror config, in a 8-drive raid box with 2 x multilane infiniband interfaces and a RocketRaid card. The 64MB cache is noticeable, totally. It is not hype. On average, I get 100MB/sec copying across a gigabit network in the LAN from one machine to this RAID volume. In a similar test (using the same source machine, to a volume of 750GB AAKS', I get ~82MB/sec across the wire. Again, the cache is noticeable in my tests. I am amazed at the quality of this drive. I recommend these drives to anyone who needs to use a RAID config, and needs capacity, and reliability. I only use WD, period. I currently own 46 hard drives, all WD. The only WD hard drive I ever had fail, was a green 750GB one. The older AAKS series was phenomenal, and these are the new ones to get! By Matthew Marlowe I'm not normally a fan of SATA drives, I've worked extensively with SAS/SCSI drives for servers/etc for the last 20 years and only used ATA/SATA when required. Still, I've had some projects come up recently where the only option was SATA and high capacity was required. After some bad experiences with the WDC Cavier Black 2TB, I gave the RE4 a try. It's been great. I've now had 5 of them running for the last six months and the SMART monitoring reports still show the drives as in almost new condition...no errors, no need for sector changes, no unusual increases of load cycle counts, etc. Performance has also been very good....surprisingly good for a mere 7200rpm device. Not to mention, the drives seem to work nicely in both software and hardware raid. I'll probably end up buying another 5 of them soon. I'll be very happy if I can keep the failure rate to under 4%/yr....this historically is a good rate for SATA/ATA. I'm not sure what to think about WDC.....I generally prefer seagate, but the RE4 drives certainly seems to be able to back up its claim as an enterprise SATA drive. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Solid Performer at a Fair Price By P. Levine I bought this to replace a Seagate backup drive that lacked enough room for drive images. The WD5003 is quiet and speedy and comes with a 5-year Enterprise warranty. No problems with it at all. Buyers have been complaining about Amazon's poor bare-drive packaging in many of the reviews I've read. However, this drive was packaged properly in a box of its own made by WD, with plastic end caps suspending the drive over the bottom of the box. This package was put in another box with the rest of the items I ordered and a couple of air pillows. Perhaps Amazon has listened to the well-founded complaints and revised their bare-drive shipping accordingly. Then again, it might only apply to this particular hard drive. By Tryglyph I've tested several external 2-3TB, USB 3.0 hard drives over the past month, and for various reasons (VCD, USB 3.0 issues, etc) have set aside all but this one. Testing was performed on a Dell 7400 workstation running XP SP3. This drive worked immediately out of the box, no intrusive VCD, no formatting problems, and partitioned easily into two approximately equal logical drives. USB 3.0 Transfers from the internal hard drive to this drive indicated write speeds of 39-51 MB/sec for single 1GB and 4GB video files. Multiple files (1800 files totaling 1GB) were understandably slower at about 26MBsec. Read speeds back to the computer were slower. The only nit-picking quibble I might have is the very bright(!) activity indicator on the front panel, but this minor point does not detract from the functionality of the product. Reliability is the next issue, and this review will be updated if anything untoward occurs within the next few months. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Easy to use, needs reformatting to us with a Mac By jajnyc77 This hard drive was very easy to use with my mac after I reformatted it to my operating system. It was slightly frustrating as the packaging says it is possible but gives no instructions on how to do it, and neither does the online product help page. By googling "how to reformat an external hard drive for mac" I was able to find a message board that discussed this topic. It took the third of the suggested options to reformat, but after this (which only took about 10 minutes) the hard drive was drag and drop ready. Files transfer quickly and are easily indexed. A great value for the money! 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. no unnecessary software By mussels I am so used to receiving external hard drives with unnecessary software, drives and programs that i was completely shocked when i plugged it in and it was ready to use within 5 seconds. This is exactly what an external hard drive should be, the only thing preloaded on the drive is two .pdf documents that can be deleted anytime you want.
