Schneider This is a good product provided you and your equipment can get by the gotchas. 1. The cable is NOT eSATA. It is eSATAp. eSATAp is a combo USB/eSATA port found on newer portables. Regular eSATA ports found on desktops are NOT powered. I use mine between my tower and notebook. 2. The cable is short. 3. You can buy a PCIe card with eSATAp port(s) but the cable will likely be too short. 4. You could opt for the USB 3.0 version if you have USB 3.0 ports. You can add a PCIe card with USB 3. port(s) but the cable may be too short. I went this route with WD Passports but the USB cable was too short and proprietary. If the USB 3.0 cable is standard and removable, you may be able to add a longer regular USB cable. 5. I have found and ordered after much searching an adapter cable that plugs into the both a vacant USB and eSATA and port and then combines the two into what I hope is a female eSATAp port. If it works, it will solve both the power and cable length issues. This puppy is called a BYTECC USB + eSATA to USB/eSATA Cable. Hope it works. Just Be Certain You Have eSATAp Before You Buy! By Too Cold in Madison I like the GoFlex system and looked forward to increasing the transfer speed when connected to my home desktop by using this eSATA cable rather than USB 2.0. No such luck with my machine. You have to have a powered "eSATAp" port on your machine. Many eSATA ports are not powered, even on fancy expensive motherboards. Since the portable GoFlex (2.5") drives do not use AC adapters like the desktop ones, thus depending on the cable for power, you must have an eSATAp port. Hilliard This interface option is well worth the price. I wanted a fast portable external drive and the eSATA plug for the GoFlex drive is an excellent solution. On Windows 7, using USB 2.0 (I don't have USB 3.0 but do have built in eSATA) I was getting about 26MB/second. With the eSATA plug I am getting 78MB/second for a group of files, almost 3 times as fast. While I realize that SATA has a much higher maximum throughput, 3Gb/second, 2.5" drives do not. The applications that heavily access the drive seem to run as fast as they do on the internal drive. Great improvements from Hitachi By AW In the past i've been referring Hitachi DeskStar as the deathstars due to high failure rates. I have been purchasing these drives for work due attractive pricing and very surprised to see no failure rates over the last 14 months. This purchase was for personal use and would be the 4th drive (over 30 drives are being used at work). Nice improvement from Hitachi. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Satisfied By Jojo99 Brought two of these form Amazon a couple of weeks back. They are as advertised and arrived well packed. I have not had any problems so far. I am running one drive internally and the other in an open external enclosure as a backup device. The drives are very quiet and don't get very hot (just ran a disk benchmark and the temp went up to 33ºC). CPU usage during the test was 7.2% on my E6750 system. Performance on HDTune shows transfer rate avg of 108.2 MB/sec (131-65MB/sec). Burst rate was measured at 207MB/sec. Access time at 14.1ms seems a bit slow but then this is a 1 TB drive. I can't find anywhere that Hitachi is quoting access times on this drive, so I have no scale to know if this number is good for this drive or not. So far so good By Dan Evans Installed one of these in a NAS last March to replace a failing Seagate. It seems many of the early 1TB drives, including the Seagate 7200.12 series and WD Caviar Blacks, had extremely high failure rates after only a few months. I ended up going with the Hitachi as it was one of only a few other drives listed as supported by the NAS and seemed to have slightly better reviews. The Hitachi drive is much quieter than the Seagate, and seems to run a little cooler as well. I also purchased a Samsung F3 drive around the same time to use as a backup, and while that one is a little noisier than the Hitachi, it seems to be slightly faster as well. Both the Hitachi and the Samsung are still working fine more than 6 months after being installed, which is more than I can say for the similar drives from other manufacturers. By Honest Guy NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED: I've watched the issue with these drives carefully for about 2 months. It looks like Seagate solved the problem and that a vocal few were ever really affected. By few I mean relative to the thousands sold. And I am not defending Seagate. This whole fiasco was unacceptable. MY SYSTEM: I picked up 8 of these drives. I'm running them in 4 separate DLink DNS-321 RAID boxes. I've copied about 4TB of data back and forth across them for days. My only firmware update needed was for the DLink so that it could properly handle the new 1.5TB drives. In the end I believe all is well with both the drives and the DLink DNS-321. I will of course update this review immediately if I see any problems. PERFORMANCE: We are able to watch movies from this drive arrangement on 3 computers simultaneously across a 100mb network from the same drive while adding new files to the drive from a 4th computer. This means I can be adding movies unattended to the system while watching an Epic Man movie on the plasma in the living room... while the kids are watching Monsters Inc in the bedroom... and the wife is off watching some chic flick in the Den. :) The combination of DLink and these 1.5TB drives is fantastic and seems as stable as the WD 1TBs I was using previously. PROPER DIAGNOSIS: Don't confuse your drive DIEING after a week with the previous firmware problems of this particular drive. Blame the vendor that shipped the drive like it could bounce ! ON A SIDE NOTE: I will say I am sick of Amazon, Tiger and other vendors shipping hard drives like they are indestructible ROCKS. Even if they arrive working, this inadequate packaging is certainly taking years off the life of our drives. One of my 8 arrived DEAD as a brick thanks to this nonsense. I am furious about this issue ! Will it take a class action to stop this behavior of guaranteeing future drive sales by damaging todays drives through deliberate mishandling of our purchases ?! Wake up AMAZON ! Wake up TIGER ! UPDATE: Dec 14 2009 One year later, I own 22 of these drives now. 12 are running daily in DNS-321 Raid boxes. The other 10 are used as back up drives in a drop in SATA adapter. No failures since 2 in the first few weeks, I believe due to poor packaging. About 6 of my drives came with the BAD firmware. I never had issues with that either. Call me blessed. I just think the DNS-321 and these drives work very well together. UPDATE: Jan 8 2011 Another year passes and most of my 1.5TBs have all been pulled from DNS-321 RAID boxes and used as loose backup drives in a drop in SATA adapter. I've replaced them with the larger Seagate 2TB drives for larger capacity. NO FAILURES OF EITHER DRIVE 1.5TB or 2TB ! I have a couple Hitachi's and WD 2TBs. The Seagate drives are quieter and come off sleep in my RAID boxes faster than the other brands. All are used for video streaming over a network and do a fantastic job. TIGER has been shipping drives MUCH BETTER. Amazon packagers have sent me drives packed poorly just 2 months ago. I requested replacements and Amazon handled the no charge exchange well. Ok first thing I want to start off by saying is that this is the External Desk Drive, meaning that it must use a power adapter to work and not just from USB. It's kinda my fault for not doing the proper research but just to let you all know. If you're looking for a USB powered 3.0 one, try the Buffalo Cobalt Ministation. Ok so now on to the review. My first impression of this drive is that it is very glossy. I knew it would be glossy, but not that much. As such, it is a HUGE fingerprint magnet. This may not be a problem for those that will keep it on the desk, but I'm making this function as my portable hard drive until I get the other one. I'm not going to bore you with statistics on the write/read speeds compared to usb 2.0 etc.(there are lots of sites that has this information, google it)but I will say that thing is miles faster than usb 2.0. When I first used this I almost thought it wasn't working because nothing popped up that said the file was transferring, but that was just how fast it was. There is software that comes with it. The software is a basic back-up utility that can autmatically sync and back up your files. This software is mehhh. It does its job, but i've seen better. It's up to you if you want to use it. There also is something called turbo usb or something that when activated makes it supposedly read/write even faster but honestly I haven't seen a difference and I think its just a gimmick. Overall, I would definitely reccomend this if you have a usb 3.0 port handy (my notebook came with one) ,planning to install one or just wanting to be future proof. Its backwards compatible with usb 2.0 so no loss there. One thing I don't like with this product (although all companies do this now) is that it advertises 1.5 TB but not all of that is usable. I can't exactly remember how much was usable out the box, but it was a substantial amount and for who knows what. That being sad, SPACE IS NOT A PROBLEM. I have two full PC backups, LOTS of photos, music and video. LOTS of games and applications and many other files etc. and i still have close to a terabyte left! I'm trying to find things now to fill that up. CLOSING This is definitely a good buy, and I highly reccommend this to anyone in the market for one. One of the best USB 3.0 drives yet! By Reviewinator For the new kids on the block who have got USB 3.0 ports, like myself, go no further. This is the external Hard Drive your looking for. When I received the Hard Drive I immediately did a read/write speed test on it using HD Tune. I was shocked by the results. This external Hard Drive had out preformed my internal hard drive, which isn't a shabby hard drive (a SATA 7,200rpm 320gb Seagate Barracuda). I was getting speeds of about 90MBps on the internal drive. Here's the real shocker on the 1.5TB model I got (and I don't expect it to be different on the other models as well) I was getting speeds of 120MBps. So in laymen's terms this Hard drive is 25% faster then the internal drive. By the way these hard drives are 7,200rpm and not 5,400rpm (wasn't mentioned in the product description)so you really get the most out of the drive. The software this hard drive comes with is very useful, when you initiate the setup for the drive using the wizard you'll have to format the drive, but you can download the software from the buffalo website again so its no problem as well as the firmware updates which you should download anyway. On the other hand that might have just been a problem I had, I may have botched the installer by wanting to fly through the setup to test it out. Either way it's not a problem. High Capacity, High Performance, High reliability By justin_v The first thing to be mentioned, is that no one can rightfully complain about not having 1TB of storage, every drive, for the longest time is rated raw. When I formatted mine to NTFS it was 931.5GB, about 20GB more than I even expected. The second thing to understand, is every drive model, from every manufacturer, has a pretty standard, and somewhat high, DOA (here I am considering DOA as literally dead on arrival, and 1 week and under) rate. If you receive a DOA, rate the replacement, or the service you received. If you get two DOA's, or get a replacement that is DOA; complain freely. I have my drive (I have the exact drive, except I purchased it OEM) inside a Nexstar 3 enclosure (capable of recognizing all 1TB) via esata (you can use USB 2.0 with this enclosure as well). The performance is slightly better, but nothing substantial, without the jumper (it effectively dubs the drive down to sata 1). Generally, I've found, drives fail sooner than later; this drive will most likely serve me for quite some time. Dolan Be careful with this drive, Seagate has a known problem with many of it's recent Baracuda High Capacity Hard Drives, where after 3-6 months, the drive simply fails to boot. If you purchase this drive, you must go to the [..] site and use the drive detect software they offer there to see what version of firmware is on your drive. If there is an updated version of firmware then you need to flash update your drive. If you are uncomfortable doing this, then i would suggest buying another vendor's drive. The drive worked fine the first week I had it, while running Mac OS 10.5, but since the upgrade to 10.6.3 the eGo drive will not mount. iOmega tech support says the drive is not getting enough power from my laptop. To "accommodate" me, they're sending the dual-USB connector cable they say the drive needs in 7 - 10 business days. I'm not sure why the drive worked originally and then stopped or why iOmega would say it needs a dual connector but package it with a single. Maybe best eSATA for price at time I bought it By Make IT happen I probably use this a little differently than most people. I have several computers and a network NAS (Synology DS109) that is used for central storage, so instead of backing up an individual computer, I am backing up my NAS. I had previously been backing up to a USB 2.0 drive that finally died. I didn't want to spend too much but needed 1TB, wanted the eSATA speed, but the option of using USB if eSATA didn't workout (the Synology runs on a Linux kernel and I wasn't sure of compatibility). So this one popped up on Amazon as being the proper capacity, option of eSATA or USB, waranty, really good reviews, and a great price for all that. So far so good, backed up 250 GB (200,000+ files) from the NAS in about 6 hours. Not as fast as I thought, but I don't use any of the included software and the bottleneck could be on my NAS. It is important to note that backing up a few large several GB files only takes seconds, it is when the system has to enumerate tens of thousands of files that it takes longer so I can back up 12 GB of 3 ISO files in seconds, but 1GB of thousands pdfs or pictures may take 10+ minutes. Like some other reviews, no real heat issues, and actually runs very cool now that the single initial large backup is done. I've had it for almost a month, the NAS backs up to it every 4 hours, never fails, and everything is there. It came very fast through Amazon (about 2 days on Super Saver shipping) and came with all the needed things. Ryan The drive works great, fast SATA connection instead of USB is a big plus. But I bought the drive in part for the "Never Down" software which is supposed to back up your system drive. It's "included" by which they mean it's not actually in the box, you have to download it. It wouldn't install and then Iomega told me it's not compatible with Windows 7 (which has been out for a long time now). I told them the box lists Windows 7 as being compatible, they said what that really means is it's compatible with the drive, not necessarily the software. A little "short" of perfect By Eliezer Kolatch I decided to test this hard drive by using it as the primary hard drive for my PVR/media center PC. Allowing me to free up some space from my internal hard drive while also putting the iomega through its paces. The pros and cons of my experience with the drive are below: PRO: 1. Minimalist design and square housing make the drive easy to stack with other components and won't negatively affect the aesthetic of your home theater or office. 2. The LED to indicate the device is on which is unusually bright, is situated toward the back of the drive making it less glaring in a dark room. 3. At 1 to 2 TB this drive is perfect for media use. Windows media center claims the 1TB drive, which I tested should hold 721.5 hours of standard def TV or 109.5 hours of HD TV. Or I assume, 50 hi-def movies (without extras). 4. When copying files to the drive, while recording TV, playback of TV stuttered initially, but then proceeded with smooth playback. 5. General playback was flawless, with no slowdown when playing HD content, and no indication that the transfer speed of the drive was not up to the task of acting as a media drive. 6. While not truly portable (you need to drag around a separate power cable and its much larger than most portable drives) this is small enough that you could take it with you on vacation, since it is about the size of a large paperback. Moreover while it is smaller than many other external hard drives I have used (for example it is half the size of a WD MyBook Essentials 500GB drive). 7. At around $100 the drive is a good deal, in between the prices for internal 1TB hard drives and external 1TB hard drives. CON: 1. The only major problem I had was with the provided Power and USB cables. The USB cable was short about 3 feet but that's replaceable so the problem is relatively minor. The power cord, which would be much more difficult to replace is only about 4.5 feet and as such really limits drive placement. In my setup I did not have enough cord to place the drive where I initially intended and had to reshuffle components to get everything to fit which was a big pain. 2. As I mentioned above it is not a true portable drive and as such needs an external power cord which is annoying. OTHER DESIGN NOTES: Speeds when copying files to/from the drive where at an average of 19mb/s or 1.14GB/ min , much slower than USB 2.0 rated speed of 480 Mbit/s. I will note however that my other external hard drive, a USB 2.0 WD passport showed similar speeds, and my guess is that this is a result of the speed of the drive in my computer and the external drives. That said, iomega doesn't provide any precise information about the read/write speed of the drive. Despite what another reviewer wrote the drive is not quite. A hushed but audible sound from the enclosure for the most part however this blended with the other background electronic noises and didn't detract from my listening or viewing experience. If you want a truly quiet drive you'll have to go solid state. The drive does tend to heat up, but only to a point that I would consider "warm" not to a heat that would worry me in terms of effecting the drive or other peripherals near the drive. CONCLUSION: The eGo preformed on par with the performance of most external hard drives I've used over the years. So what sets it apart is really the design. If you're looking for something to take with you on a regular basis, I would consider a smaller drive, perhaps the eGo portable. Otherwise this is a solid option, especially considering its relative portability and size compared to some of the competition. Also portable 1TB hard drives without separate power cables are expensive, or experience frequent issues (just check amazon reviews). So I think this is a good option. By SCF Having owned one of the Thermaltake BlackX versions of these type of docking solutions before, I was eager to try one of these new dual unit stations. These are a pretty solid product and I found them much cheaper (by about 25% or so) on Amazon than Newegg. The only negative I have in comparing this to my last docking station is that the Thermaltake was a snug fit. The 3.5" drive felt very secure and stable in it. There was no room for wiggling. This docking station is not as snug. In fact, once you've docked your drives in it, they can still wiggle if you nudge them. These do not detract significantly from the quality, but I would be more careful with placing them in an undisturbed area than before. If I had paid the full price Newegg and others were charging, it might be enough to make me return it and look for something with a tighter fit. I would absolutely not hesitate to recommend this to someone looking to attach extra storage, backup drives, or even someone like myself who has a shelf full of 3.5" drives that they only occasionally need to retrieve something from. It beats the solution I had years ago with two or three dozen large isolated external cases with power adapters, fans, ribbons, USB cables... Great combination of features By bqb I wanted a dock with separate eSATA connectors for each drive rather than what I found in most docks--one eSATA connector with an internal port multiplier. With this dock I can connect each drive to a different computer, or use an operating system that doesn't support multipliers. Each drive gets the full available throughput with its dedicated connection. If you use USB, then both drives show up separately via the single USB connection. Drive performance using eSATA is not at all degraded, resulting in the same speed as my internal drives. I expected the drives to be a bit wobbly or insecure, but even newer shallow 3.5" drives fit well, as do 2.5" drives. I've been completely satisfied with this unit. It is larger than I expected having not carefully read the dimensions, but that lends to its stability. I still would have bought it. Sure most companies go through periods when their products might not live up to expectations but WD has really stepped up their game. I purchased this drive to replace a Momentus XT in my Macbook 15" Unibody 2010. I simply gave up with the bizarre behavior and constant firmware upgrades of the Momentus and went with this Scorpio Black released just days ago. Much to my suprise, its pretty much as fast as the Momentus XT (when it was working correctly) except for boot. Since I am on a Mac, I really dont reboot much so its not an issue. The 750GB capacity is stunning!! I have a 500GB Mac partition and a 250GB Windows Partition and I am pretty much set until SSDs drop in price. This drive carries a 5 year warranty and WD has always supposed their warranty program well. I am not noticing very much vibration in my Macbook but to be honest, I yanked the slow 5400rpm drive and replaced it with the Momentus as soon as I unboxed so I can not compare against the original drive. Battery life has decreased slightly (30 mins) but given the speed of the drive and the performance increase, that is to be expected. Remember if you are replacing in a Mac, do yourself a favor and invest in a quality set of percision screwdrivers as the screws are easily stripped and can often times be tight enough to strip inferior tools. 25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Upon returning home from work, everything appeared to be working great but I did start to notice a strange noise, after some use. It seems to be a known issue that when you replace the hard drive in the newer macs with EFI 1.6 or later, the drive will park the heads hundreds of times in a couple hours unless you install a fix for it. This can cause accelerated wear on the drive and shorten its lifespan. My drive had a load cycle count of 498 in the 7 hours that I left it on while i was at work, this is not a good thing; it should be at less than 10-20 for that same amount of time. There is a very HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FIX at:[...]. It involves some minor technical work and can be compared to editing a few settings on the windows registry. If you can take the cover off of your laptop and install a new drive just fine, you can do this. I have just installed the fix described above and everything is working great with no clicking noises coming from the new drive. Some other tips for installing the drive include: 1. Replace the back cover screws on the MBP unibody starting with the middle columns (in the order of bottom left, top right, bottom right, top left), next replace the end screws from right to left in the order of middle row, then bottom row, then top row. 2. If you are restoring from a time machine backup, do a fresh install of the software first by booting from the System Restore Disc, Going to the Utilities menu in the setup environment and formatting the disk using Disk Utility. Next do a clean install of Snow Leopard to take advantage of the new 4k sector scheme required for this drive. Finally on the first boot of the system, restore your files and settings using the "Restore from a time machine backup" option of the registration screens. Great replacement for Mac Unibody Drive By Steven W. Graff This was a replacement drive for a 320GB 7400 RPM Seagate. A couple of things that will be important to others: * The drive is silent, it is as quiet or quieter than the Seagate * I cannot provide an exact measurement yet, but battery life is noticeably longer. I am estimating 10-15% even with the larger capacity. (Probably because of advances in technology as well as the lower 5400 RPM) * The ADF formatting provides considerably more usable space. Well made, well designed, and works beautifully By Jonathan Birge After seeing some very poor reviews to the $10 and $15 enclosures, I decided I'd "splurge" and see if $20 could buy you a good drive enclosure. I'm glad I did. Unlike the plastic enclosures, this model uses a very well-designed aluminum case, which will withstand repeated installations. It also looks great, as a bonus, and appears to do a very good job dissipating heat. (You can tell this because the enclosure gets slightly warm to the touch. Contrary to popular belief, if something feels warm, that actually means it's doing a good job of pulling the heat out of whatever is inside it and letting it flow to the air. That's why heatsinks get hot, and why styrofoam cups don't.) Internally, the printed circuit board (PCB) takes up the entire length of the enclosure, and the drive is screwed on to it. This is much more stable and rugged than the cheap enclosures, where the drive simply gets shoved in the enclosure and attached to a small PCB at the back. An additional benefit you won't find on other, cheaper, enclosures is that an eSATA interface is offered, allowing for high transfer speeds if your computer can support this. The only problem I encountered was that the manual was completely incorrect in its diagram of how to install the drive, and must be referring to a previous generation. By Charles Chen First of all, the enclosure works; that's always a bonus ;) I replaced my stock 80 GB 7200 RPM drive in my Dell E6400 and threw it into this enclosure. Worked fine with just one USB connector. When I got my eSATA cable (see my reviews), it connected right up and it worked perfectly with my Vista Business x64 install on my Dell E6400; no settings changes, no configuration, just worked. The eSATA cable fit nice and snugly into the connector and the connection feels pretty secure. I verified that it was using eSATA using DiskBench and got transfer rates around 55-60MB/s for a 1 GB file. Solid. Dramatically improved my virtual machine load and save times. Secondly, as a bonus, it's a very attractive case. It's relatively slim in profile (barely larger than the disk itself). The ends are plastic, but the core is anodized aluminum. The only way this could be better is if it came with some rubber feet or some rubber end caps or something to keep it from sliding around. But I bought two, and put in a RAID1 mirror config, in a 8-drive raid box with 2 x multilane infiniband interfaces and a RocketRaid card. The 64MB cache is noticeable, totally. It is not hype. On average, I get 100MB/sec copying across a gigabit network in the LAN from one machine to this RAID volume. In a similar test (using the same source machine, to a volume of 750GB AAKS', I get ~82MB/sec across the wire. Again, the cache is noticeable in my tests. I am amazed at the quality of this drive. I recommend these drives to anyone who needs to use a RAID config, and needs capacity, and reliability. I only use WD, period. I currently own 46 hard drives, all WD. The only WD hard drive I ever had fail, was a green 750GB one. The older AAKS series was phenomenal, and these are the new ones to get! By Matthew Marlowe I'm not normally a fan of SATA drives, I've worked extensively with SAS/SCSI drives for servers/etc for the last 20 years and only used ATA/SATA when required. Still, I've had some projects come up recently where the only option was SATA and high capacity was required. After some bad experiences with the WDC Cavier Black 2TB, I gave the RE4 a try. It's been great. I've now had 5 of them running for the last six months and the SMART monitoring reports still show the drives as in almost new condition...no errors, no need for sector changes, no unusual increases of load cycle counts, etc. Performance has also been very good....surprisingly good for a mere 7200rpm device. Not to mention, the drives seem to work nicely in both software and hardware raid. I'll probably end up buying another 5 of them soon. I'll be very happy if I can keep the failure rate to under 4%/yr....this historically is a good rate for SATA/ATA. Solid Performer at a Fair Price By P. Levine I bought this to replace a Seagate backup drive that lacked enough room for drive images. The WD5003 is quiet and speedy and comes with a 5-year Enterprise warranty. No problems with it at all. Buyers have been complaining about Amazon's poor bare-drive packaging in many of the reviews I've read. However, this drive was packaged properly in a box of its own made by WD, with plastic end caps suspending the drive over the bottom of the box. This package was put in another box with the rest of the items I ordered and a couple of air pillows. Perhaps Amazon has listened to the well-founded complaints and revised their bare-drive shipping accordingly. Then again, it might only apply to this particular hard drive. As proof I give you their new 1TB SE portable hard drive. No nasty bloatware gumming up the works, no unreliable connectivity. Just a plain simple drive that holds a massive amount of data in a suprisingly small unit. See we consumers can make a difference! WD congratulations on recognizing that "the customer is always right" even if it took a while for it to sink in. I'll be buying more WD products again, starting with another one of these. UPDATE: I have had 2 of these drives for about a month now and decided I could offer more input to those of you trying to decide on a storage solution. We'll start with the CONS: I bought 2 of these drives and felt I had to return 1 because it had a loose usb port on the drive. The mini USB cable fits very snug in this port and perhaps WD over compensated for early reviews that the stability of the cable was a problem. The drive still functioned, but I was uncomfortable with the fact that the port was not solid after several uses. This is why I've changed my rating from 5 to 4 stars. (By the way return through Amazon was simple and pain free.) Now the PROS: I have kept the second drive and it is performing flawlessly. I'm hoping the port issue was just that particular unit, because I REALLY like this drive. The best thing about it is that WD kept it SIMPLE. There is no bloatware, just a vast amount of storage space! I considered Seagate, but all of their portable drives now appear to have a backup bloatware preinstalled and I don't need or WANT that. The system recognized the port multiplier without issues; two disks over eSATA worked out of the box. Tested it with two 500G drives (a Seagate and a WDC). Reading from a single drive gives a decent ~75 MB/s; simultaneous reads from two drives drop the rate to 45 MB/s. A major problem, though: while idle, the drives hover around ~47 degC. With ~1hr of heavy reading, they heat up to ~60 degC (with ambient temps around ~20 degC). The design of this dock blocks _all_ airflow to the bottom end of the drives, leading to severe overheating. This makes BlackX practically useless for duplication of larger drives; they'll overheat/fail long before the duplication has finished. E.g., I managed to copy ~150G of a 500G drive before it hit 60degC and stopped. Looks like a major design flaw; plan to return it. 39 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Morris I bought this mainly for the fast eSata support, but was greatly dissapointed to find out that my computer will not support dual eSata as it doesn't have port multiplier functionality. My computer is fairly new as well and running Windows 7 Professional. Most people won't know if their computer has port multiplier functionality until they buy an item such as this and try it. Dual drives work good using USB, but you only get 400MB transfer rates and not 3GB as you do with eSata. The eSata with 1 drive does work but is somewhat flakey as well. What will happen is at least 25% of the time when you reboot the computer and you are using the dock connected via eSate cable, the computer will lose sight of the dock and tell you there is no eSata dock/drive connected. Only way to redetect the dock and drive is to power down the dock as well as computer, then power on the dock, let the drive initialize for approx. 30 seconds, then power back on the computer. Using the USB cable, this does not happen, so one can only assume the eSata connectivity between the port and the computer is flakey. Other than that, I like the dock as it's fairly light and easy to use amoung several computers to backup and copy data too. 20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Has issues on Mac with USB By Brian The product works great when you are just reading from the drive on a Mac. The problem comes when you try to write. The drive get's messed up and can't write any longer. You get an Error -50 when you try a write operation. From the finder it's easy to see, but some applications don't handle the error veery well and you can think the file ha been updated when it hasn't. If you force eject the drive and remount you can write to the drive but after a while the error 50 comes up again. The single drive version works great on the Mac but not the double drive version. On e-sata, it is every bit as fast as if it was internally installed. I haven't used the USB interface, but it is probably quite a bit slower. My hard drives run barely warm to the touch. The eject button is really only there to help you pull it out. It works best for me to grab the drive and pull while pressing the button. The dock holds on to the drive pretty tightly, and if you eject the drive by simply pressing the eject button without holding/pulling the drive itself, it could easily pop completely out and fall on the desk or the floor. Falling isn't particularly great for hard drives, even if it is only a few inches. This is SO much more useful than an enclosed external hard drive if you need several. Bare hard drives are a lot cheaper than the ones built into enclosures. They are very easy to install in this dock. It works a lot like putting an iPod into a dock, but this is a lot more robust. I use several hard drives in my computer. I have music on one, movies and recorded TV on another, etc., to keep all of that kind of stuff off my main drive. I have a couple more I use as backups. I put them in an antistatic bag and in my fire safe. Some reviewers have commented about how it says it works up to 1TB or 1.5 TB. If yours says it works up to 1TB, it is only because you got an older printing of the box. When the box was printed, the largest drives commonly available were 1 TB. Now they have changed the box and the web site to say 1.5 TB. They only changed the box, not the product. I'm not sure why they put the "up to X.X TB" in there. Now drives are up to 2 TB, and they will all work with this as long as the BIOS and the OS in your PC will work with them. When they say "up to X.X TB", it leads people to believe that anything bigger won't work, but it will. Dual boot, extra storage, fast, and accessible. I love it... By John E. Pombrio This is a great device for a bunch of reasons: 1. Backup. Using Acronis True Image 11 home, I can clone the drive in an hour. Put it off site and a bulletproof backup. 2. Reinstalling the operating system. I just reinstalled Vista (use it full time now that SP1 is out). I put my old Vista drive in the Blacx and could pull any info I needed right off the drive. 3. Booting different operating systems. I have three hard drives with different operating systems on them, Vista, XP , and Linux. I used to have them all in my PC but was afraid of a catastrophic failure (due mostly to me- I am a menace to my poor computer!). Now I can keep the drives out of the PC but insert and boot from them at any time. Just change the order of the boot hard drive in the BIOS. 4. Extra storage. Nice to be able to dump a bunch of older stuff into a drive. Keeps my boot drive clean and the access is there when I need it. Cons? Not many. My WD drives run a little hot in the BlacX when booting from it. The power cord to the box is pretty short. You need to have an ESATA port on your PC (or in my case, and adapter and change the port in the BIOS). Speed? On the ESATA, I notice NO speed slowdowns when booting from a drive in the BlacX in comparison to an internal SATA hard drive. They got it right with ESATA. By Honest Guy NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED: I've watched the issue with these drives carefully for about 2 months. It looks like Seagate solved the problem and that a vocal few were ever really affected. By few I mean relative to the thousands sold. And I am not defending Seagate. This whole fiasco was unacceptable. MY SYSTEM: I picked up 8 of these drives. I'm running them in 4 separate DLink DNS-321 RAID boxes. I've copied about 4TB of data back and forth across them for days. My only firmware update needed was for the DLink so that it could properly handle the new 1.5TB drives. In the end I believe all is well with both the drives and the DLink DNS-321. I will of course update this review immediately if I see any problems. PERFORMANCE: We are able to watch movies from this drive arrangement on 3 computers simultaneously across a 100mb network from the same drive while adding new files to the drive from a 4th computer. This means I can be adding movies unattended to the system while watching an Epic Man movie on the plasma in the living room... while the kids are watching Monsters Inc in the bedroom... and the wife is off watching some chic flick in the Den. :) The combination of DLink and these 1.5TB drives is fantastic and seems as stable as the WD 1TBs I was using previously. PROPER DIAGNOSIS: Don't confuse your drive DIEING after a week with the previous firmware problems of this particular drive. Blame the vendor that shipped the drive like it could bounce ! ON A SIDE NOTE: I will say I am sick of Amazon, Tiger and other vendors shipping hard drives like they are indestructible ROCKS. Even if they arrive working, this inadequate packaging is certainly taking years off the life of our drives. One of my 8 arrived DEAD as a brick thanks to this nonsense. Wake up AMAZON ! Wake up TIGER ! UPDATE: Dec 14 2009 One year later, I own 22 of these drives now. 12 are running daily in DNS-321 Raid boxes. The other 10 are used as back up drives in a drop in SATA adapter. No failures since 2 in the first few weeks, I believe due to poor packaging. About 6 of my drives came with the BAD firmware. I never had issues with that either. Call me blessed. I just think the DNS-321 and these drives work very well together. UPDATE: Jan 8 2011 Another year passes and most of my 1.5TBs have all been pulled from DNS-321 RAID boxes and used as loose backup drives in a drop in SATA adapter. I've replaced them with the larger Seagate 2TB drives for larger capacity. NO FAILURES OF EITHER DRIVE 1.5TB or 2TB ! I have a couple Hitachi's and WD 2TBs. The Seagate drives are quieter and come off sleep in my RAID boxes faster than the other brands. All are used for video streaming over a network and do a fantastic job. TIGER has been shipping drives MUCH BETTER. Amazon packagers have sent me drives packed poorly just 2 months ago. I requested replacements and Amazon handled the no charge exchange well. When the updates were made available, I flashed my 5 drives and they've been working fine ever since. I'd change the rating to a 4 star if the editor allowed. By Marmite I have been using the WD Studio II 2TB on my 2008 iMac OSX 10.5.6 for two weeks. Connection: firewire 800. Today, it did not mount when I booted the computer. Checked the WD Website Knowledge Base. Discovered two things: 1. Knowledge Base Answer 1697: "This issue is caused by the external hard drive's built in auto on/off functionality not correctly receiving a command from the computer system to wake from a power saver mode." Why does the auto on/off functionality not correctly receive the command from the computer system? WD goes on to suggest installing their WD Drive Manager. Well, WD Drive Manager is already installed, how else could a user have arrived at this impasse to begin with? And then they suggest to dismount the drive. How do you dismount an unmounted drive? 2. Knowledge Base Answer 1680: "This is an technical limitation between the FireWire interfaces on the Macintosh computer and the external hard drive." By "the external hard drive" WD means THEIR brand of external hard drive. I have never had this specific problem with any other brands of external hard drives connected to my Macintosh computer. When is WD going to fix this "technical limitation" that they have built into their Studio II external hard drive? I would say, that is a pretty serious "technical limitation." 1680 goes on to explain the workaround solution, essentially a routine disconnecting the power cable and reconnecting. Nice. My hope is that this entire situation is the result of following the apparently misleading instructions shown in the Studio II manual: chapter 7, "Turning Off/Disconnecting the Device." Since "Auto-off" is the first entry in this chapter, it leads the user to believe that this is the preferred way to operate the drive. Guess not: as it turns out, the hidden "technical limitation" of the firewire connection will eventually cause the problem I have described. I suppose I can't rely on "Auto-off." Use "Safe Shutdown" only, even though the instructions in the manual differ from the instructions presented in WD Knowledge Base Answer 976! And, speaking of conflicting instructions, compare WD Knowledge Base Answer 1386 with the Auto-off instructions in the manual. Based on all of this information from WD, conflicting and otherwise, my guess is that the Auto-off feature is problematic (at least with Macintosh computers) because of firewire "technical limitations" caused by the WD external drive design. Not best for Intel Macs By jenny I purchased this drive to go along with my intel mac. I was previously a happy lacie owner, but since WD came in at such a great price and was listed as great with macs, I went for it. What a mistake. For the first month, it worked well... a bit slower than my lacie, but still worked. Then, all of the sudden, it began to dismount itself from my computer. I am currently using Lightroom to edit my work, and when the drive would fail, Lightroom would loose the catalog. When you have 500+ images to edit and the drive dismounts every 45 minutes, this can become a huge issue. So, I did some further research and found out that several other intel mac users are having the same issue with this product. This is very frustrating as it is advertised 'for your mac'. Most of the other posters mentioned that the drive worked well for about a month and then started having issues. I called WD, and their customer service department was actually very helpful. The offered to send me a new unit, even though that unit would likely have the same issue down the line. I understand that there was not much they could do for me at WD, but they were concerned and helpful just the same. Luckily for me, the customer service dept at Amazon is rockin' awesome and
