By Jason I recently went from having several computer workstations, to a single laptop. I did not want to backup everything on disc (I already have things backed up on external drives) and I didn't really want to just sell my drives with my work on them (I have loads of pictures, video, and 3d renders stored over 2-3 TB of space). I was at circuit city, and seen this case. It is from Antec, a company I trust and like, and it works with internal sata drives. As long as they didn't screw things up, this was going to be a good thing (they did not, and it is). Assembly is so easy, a caveman can do it (darn you geiko!). You take your sata drive out of your computer, open up the antec case, insert your harddrive, screw in the 4 screws (they fit easily with my Western Digital 500gb drives) then insert the drive (and backing) into the case and plug in the power cord. Once that is closed, you screw in 2 black screws. Very easy, and it looks great too. I have 5 of these right now, in use, and they all run perfectly, look fantastic, are slim, make no noise, do not have glaring lights, and work the way you would want. These look great, and work great. Transfers are fast, and the unit does what you want it too. If I have a complaint, it is the stupid power supply, The thing is slanted sideways, and takes up 2-3 ports on your power supply. Why they can't use standard power supplies, or supplies connected to a power brick is beyond me. If you are going to be setting these up and keeping them on your best bet is to buy the Surge Protecter known as PowerSquid (it is here on amazon) that way you can keep them running at the same time, without messing up anything. Also while I am at it, if you want a USB hub that matches these drives perfectly, then I highly recommend the low priced, and highly functional Cables To Go 7 Port USB 2.0 Hub that is also available here on amazon. It matches the design of the enclosure perfectly. All in all, a perfect product, it does what you want, with no frills. Note this model only has USB 2.0 function, which is fine. If you need high speed transfer for video, I would recommend a firewire 2 setup, or nas, and this will cost money. 19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. if it wasn't for the screws, would be a 5 star By Jong Lee This is the second Antec enclosure I purchased and is a overall a good product. The only problem is that the 4 screws for mounting the HDD to the PCB are too long and do not secure the HDD properly. Am going to have to find some washers at the local hardware store. pros: -really small enclosure for a 3.5" (no fan) -easy to install and good instructions -good price cons: -the wrong screws 22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Enclosure made for Batman? Avoid the sunlight. By Kiyo M. If Bruce Wayne were to own an enclosure, it would seem like he would own this one; the enclosure is a black brush metal, but most of all, the LED on the front is shaped like a bat. Seriously. It lights up in only white (which is a good thing - who needs flashy rainbow colors?) and flickers when it is reading/writing. This is a good basic enclosure if you just want to hook up your SATA drive via USB 2. It is very simple to install and sticks in easily (no annoying ribbons like on some IDE enclosure). For beginners, it includes an instruction sheet on how to install in all black & white picture drawings - not a single word on it - so this is good for visual learners. With this enclosure, when you SAFELY REMOVE THE DEVICE, it will automatically shutdown the hard drive for you (from the sound of my hard drive, it seems to shut it off abruptly). Most enclosures I've used will still have the hard drive running even when you safely remove the device from the computer). If you reconnect the USB, the hard drive will power back on (that is if you have the

Look at its statistics: 10K RPM, 300GB (279.5GB formatted), 1.4 Million Hour MTBF Enterprise reliability factor, 3-platter internal configuration, Icy Dock Heat-Sink/2.5" to 3.5" Adapter, Back-Plane ready, 16MB Cache...and best of all to go along with that 1.4 Million MTBF (mean time before failure) rating it's guaranteed to last 5-years by Western Digital's all-inclusive Factory Warranty, the highest in the business. I'm a big fan of WD's Enterprise HD's, and use them extensively when building systems, or equipping my own system for ultimate reliability and performance. The "new generation" of VelociRaptor HD's is not only faster in all respects than Gen. No.1, its builders have tried very hard to make certain that reliability goes hand-in-hand with high performance, apparently. You can't say enough about attention to detail here either, with that very cool Icy Dock heat-sink/2.5" to 3.5" carrier mounting system either. A lot of people don't realize that these HD's are in reality just 2.5" in size, truly a little dog doing a big dog's work! So getting 10K RPM performance out of a little 2.5" form-factor system is truly interesting to me, and I have a bit of respect for Western Digital engineering for pulling this out of the hat and making them better 2nd time around, all-around. Let me give you some statistics from HD Tune Pro's benchmarks, and we'll see how a fully loaded and empty Raptor 300GB performs, and perhaps that will shed some light on just how good the HD's are overall. Fresh formatted and empty, I tested my Raptor in my brand new OEM PC (home built, totally 100% custom-made with all high-end hand-picked parts) with HD Tune Pro, and got this kind of performance: 1) from 8KB to 8192KB block size, with 64MB file size, it *averaged* 128MB/sec Read Speed and 142MB/sec Write Speed 2) same test, loaded with Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS, and some 70GB worth of key applications and a base system of samples and key photographs for my imaging business, making it 72% open space, it *averaged* 97MB/sec Read Speed and 104MB/sec Write Speed 3) In the Benchmark Test, again loaded with the OS and applications and samples, we get 121MB/sec maximum Read Speed, 68MB/sec minimum Read Speed for an average of 101MB/sec across the volume from 0% full to 100% full, a very linear performance. 4) Benchmark Test, loaded, access time is a whopping 7.3 milliseconds (ms), Burst Rate is 152MB/sec., both range-topping figures from any platter HD I've ever tested! That kind of performance is what makes people so happy to spend $240 or so on this HD in bulk form, more than $300 in retail boxes, and I cannot argue with their logic after installing and using a Raptor for my boot HD in the new PC build. I've got every new trick in the business in this PC, including the newest, latest, and greatest EVGA X58 1366-compatible motherboard, and twin companion WD "Black" 1TB HD's in an internal 2TB RAID "0" write/read-to volume, plus a big 4TB external RAID 6 system for movies and film, audio, and countless other high-GB-sized projects that I do, and the Raptor controls all of it tight, clean, fast, and reliably. With all of that menage' internally and externally in this PC, boot time would be several minutes normally, but the Raptor puts everything necessary loaded up and ready in less than a minute. I've trimmed the Start-Up Items to just 23 totally necessary things, where most people wouldn't bother, and that helps with boot time incredibly, or load-time when doing a restart after installing an application or one-time venture for a project, but that is a very, very quick start-up, and you have to give it to the Raptor for pulling it off. In addition, the Icy Dock seems to do wonders for keeping the Raptor literally cool temperature-wise, as I've never seen temps

Petitpas I have been buying Vantec external hard drive enclosures for several years nows, and they have allowed me to add terabytes of storage to my computers for video and audio files. When I saw this thing, I said to myself, Cool! Vantec has designed the NST-D100SU in white plastic to make a toaster analogy, you know, the thing you put bread in and it pops up when it's done. Perhaps a better comparison is to an old 8-track tape player. Hard drives are about the size of old 8-track cartridges, and there were players that looked like this (but usually with a 1970's-looking wood grain). In any event, you can now store a terabyte of information on an external hard drive and swap them out like 8-tracks. For people doing back-ups, testing or cloning hard drives, or who have massive data collections, this is great. You stick a SATA hard drive down into the device until you feel it make contact and push down. You can't really do it wrong unless you try to. Then you connect the device to a USB port on your PC or laptop, push on the big power button, and in a few seconds, your PC will see the hard drive. The only thing you have to do is the first time you use a new hard drive, you have to format it. I stay with one brand of hard drives, Western Digital, and I have its Data Lifeguard Tools already installed on my PCs. I start up the software, and it usually recognizes the new hard drive instantly, asks me if I want to format it, and the software sets it up in about 30 seconds. Once the hard drive is formatted, your PC will recognize it and assign it a drive letter. You can then copy to the new hard drive as much as you want. When you finish, remember to use the USB Safely Remove Hardware icon to remove the device. Then power it off by pressing the big power button and lift out the hard drive, and you're ready to slap in another one. This will save you the cost of having to buy external hard drive enclosures at $35 a pop, especially if you are simply archiving data. I would suggest that you put your bare hard drives in the static-free bags they originally came in, or in Ziploc bags to keep out the dust. And then you will want to store the hard drives someplace where they won't be falling off a shelf or getting zapped by static electricity. Even though I think this device is great, I only give it four stars for two reasons. The first reason is that it doesn't really replace a hard drive enclosure. An enclosure will protect your hard drive a lot more than this rather open device. The second reason is that you need to be careful to turn the power off before you remove the hard drive. I know I've been tempted to just yank it out first, but if you do that, you could be risking hard drive damage. Otherwise, this is a great device if you have a need to swap out hard drive like 8-track tapes. With one terabyte hard drives now going for less than $200, I know I'm rethinking my storage strategy to copying all my CDs and DVDs to a hard drive. You could store 1400 uncompressed CDs or 250 DVDs (or a mix of the two) on a terabyte hard drive, virtually eliminating entire bookshelves of disks. For another $100, you could buy an INOI media player 3.5" INOi MH720 USB2.0 Digital A/V Ext SATA Media HD Case, which would then elminate the need for CD and DVD players, and you could have your collection all in the palm of your hand. It blows your mind!!! 22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Looks good; feels cheap By Eugene Y. Vasserman The dock *looks* extremely attractive but it feels cheap and does not make it a pleasant experience to actually put a drive into the dock. Had I been able to hold it in my hands, I would not have bought it. It feels extremely cheap and flimsy. The power button sticks. I haven't tried 2.5" drives, but my 3.5" Seagate Barracuda wobbles in the slot. It's also extremely difficult to know when the drive is

Seale I tried a similar device by a different manufacturer before I purchased this dock -- but the other dock broke after about 15 minutes of use. I'd never heard of StarTech before, but this dock just keeps going, and going, and going... I like keeping an offsite backup of our home computer's data (for assured survival of home movies, family pictures, etc.), and this dock (along with a couple of bare SATA drives) helps me with that. Plus, this approach is pretty much "future-proof" -- when I need more space, I can upgrade the drives and sell off the current ones easily. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Works as expected By ABC It is simple to use. Works as expected. It has all accessories (eSATA and USB cables). I was doubtful about the capacity it supports before purchase - spec says 1TB or 2TB max. But it works with my 1.5TB HD well. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Plug-and-play easy. Works like a charm. By P. Gehrke Simply put it works. Set it down, plugged it into my Win7 x64 machine via provided USB cable, plugged the dock's power adapter in, dropped in a 750gb sata drive, turned it on, turned on my computer, all good and perfect. Computer recognized the external hd automatically and has been happily letting me do all kinds of work, copying, tests, etc. on it. Not a single glitch or complaint. No esata port to test it on, so can't speak to that function. See all 36 customer reviews...

This drive is flawless compared to the Seagate and Western Digital external it replaced. The design is sleek and functional, it is a little chunkier than my Seagate and WD but cools much better. The bottom is vented and I would like to think there is a cooling fan behind the vent but I am unsure. Either way after hours of writing data, and encrypting the drive the exterior is just barely warm with no slow down of performance. This is impressive compared to my Seagate which would be hot to the touch after 2-3 hours with a considerable loss of performance. The transfer speed on this drive is also very fast, using the USB 3.0 connection I was writing to the drive at 60mb/ps on average from an internal sata 2 drive. I can't comment on the bundled backup software or the online cloud storage because I formatted the drive out the box. My only complaints about this drive is I would like to sit it on its side but there is no label to tell you which side is up so you don't know rather the drive is upside down or not which if you plan to keep in the vertical position does not apply, and there is no on/off switch so to turn the drive off you have to unplug it. These things may not bother you. Overall I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone who needs fast reliable external storage. I ordered mine from J&R with expedite shipping, it arrived in 2days as promised. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Hand a problem, and tech support was amazing! By Gtaylor4mayor I just recieved my Hitachi touro desk pro in the mail. While reformatting it for my Mac I ran into a problem that unmounted the drive and it did not show up anymore. (tip for mac users: You have to go into partition and select 1 partition with the 3TB drives. and then format. The bigger drives need to be repartitioned due to the mass space.) I called tech support and was hearing a real person within 2 minutes. Tony the tech guy was very helpful through the process and then explained to me why it happened. Guy knew his stuff. I am currently backing up a ton a files and cant even hear the drive running. and the USB 3.0 is very fast. I recommend this drive not just because of its great build and price but also because of the tech support. 1 phone call and 5 minutes later my problem was fixed. Thanks Hitachi for putting my faith back into customer service. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice fast drive but doesn't play well with linux By clicq Let me start off with some of the good points about this drive. It is relatively inexpensive, looks fairly nice, and is definitely fast (I can copy to and from it at over 100MB/s in windows 7). It is also fairly quiet. Now for the bad. The main problem I have with this drive is the poor linux support. *begin techy rant* Whatever chipset this uses does not play well with linux at all. With the default uas driver, it will cause my machine to completely lock (a Dell m4600). It does this on the two machines I've tried it on and happens with two different versions of Ubuntu and several kernel versions. A Seagate GoFlex USB 3 2tb drive works perfectly fine out of the box without needing to do anything special. I am able to get this drive to work by blacklisting the uas driver, and loading and unloading the usb_storage kernel module a few times, but it's definitely not plug and play. It does work fine in Windows 7, so this may not be a huge problem for most people, and it does work in linux with a bit of hacking. *end techy rant*The case is all plastic (even the silver part), the drive does get warm (though it's not a huge concern), and the power and usb cables are rather short (the power cable does have a transformer brick on the end, but it's fairly narrow, so depending on your power strip, it may or may not take up multiple outlets).

I always trusted the name and products of WD as well as the reseller, Amazon for great products, expedient delivery, and most efficient courteous service when needed. This drive is very quiet and fast even with the enormous data capacity. It will work on the standard 3Gb/s or 6Gb/s automatically, without the need for jumper (unless it is hooked up on your front chassis for quick removal and you have a different speed drive installed. Specifically speaking, the Coolermaster HAF-X. I have the original 1 TB HD installed inside my case, with the new 1 TB HD on the plug in, in the front. It would not work until I put a jumper on it. Removing the 3 GB/s drive made the other run properly, though at only 3 GB/s since my mobo does not support 6 GB/s. But for future expansion it is perfect. It actually tests a tad faster than the other drive. I never hear it (8 fans running), never gets hot or even warm and never had data loss. It is a great buy no matter weather your mobo supports 3 or 6 GB/s as when you do upgrade to a 6GB/s mobo you will be all set. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Simonetta Reading the other reviews sort of worried me, and almost scared me out of buying a new hard drive. I am an average-knowledge techy that can hold his own in any pc-based conversation. I also have a good, working knowledge of a computer and its components; but I am by-no-means an expert. Because of this, I was worried that if I ran into any technical issues during the installation of this hardware that I would be screwed. Despite this, I still took the plunge and bought this to replace my old, and small, 250 GB, cheap hard drive that originally came with my system. Simply put, this is one of the best purchases I have ever made.Packaging: I have noticed a lot of reviews complain about the packaging which has led to some people's hardware being damaged. This problem HAS been solved. Amazon has packaged this drive perfectly and it came in pristine condition. Installation (Physical): The physical act of installing this drive was simple. I made sure to touch the metal on my chassis to expel any static I was carrying. I unplugged the cables of my old drive, pulled it out, put the new drive in, and attached the cables. Installation (Turning on the PC and beyond): I turned on the computer with my new Windows 7 OS (which I highly recommend--it is awesome [the only people who have issues with it are overly-ignorant, annoying people who are either a. MAC lovers, or b. people who just like complaining about stuff] best Windows OS to date, period). The hard drive booted right up, my computer posted without issues (that awesome beep that everyone loves to hear), and the Windows installation bar appeared at the bottom of my screen. From there, Windows installed flawlessly and within 30 minutes I had a brand new, 1 TB hard drive up and running with 0 issues! Yay!Noise, Heat, Etc.: I have also read a lot of reviews refer to the noise of this drive. It is no louder than my previous drive and I can barely hear it. in fact, unless I am concentrating on listening to every tiny, little sound my computer makes, I cannot hear it over the cooling system anyway. As far as heat, there is absolutely no difference in the internal temperature of my case. In fact, my internal chassis temperature went down .7 degrees. Overall: This was the most relieving and enjoyable experience I have ever had installing anything. I was very proud afterwards, but really, I owe that to how easy the manufacturers made it to install this drive. It is literally a plug and play

By Sandooz Maradi Drive makes loud clicking noise & eventually fails. The symptom: Drive works fine for the first few GB's, and once it gets somewhere around 50 to 300 GB, it starts making loud clicking noise. The more data added to the drive the more frequent the clicking noise become and eventually the drive fails. Analysis: As the first few sectors of the platter / platters, the traveling distance (from the edge of palter to the center) for the head arm is not that great. But as more data gets written to the disk, inner sectors of platters gets occupied with data. That's when the problem starts. Without going into technical details, the issue here is not the drive. It is the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that is installed in these external enclosures. This board regulates & provide power to the drive and in simple terms, there is not enough power for the disk to spin and for the head arm to extend far to reach inner sectors of the platter / platters . I have tried many solutions recommended on the internet, including a youtube video posted by a person identified in this video as Bruce. None has worked. Some others suggested to change the usb cable, others suggested a firmware upgrade, some suggested to send the drive back to Seagate for replacement. Some people has done that but they got a new replacement drive that did the same clicking noise, and had to be sent back again. Do not waste your time on these suggestions, because I have tried them all before I started looking & analyzing the problem myself. Seagate is well aware of this issue, but not only they are down playing the extent of this problem, they continue to sell these defective external boxes. In fact the first time this issue was reported on Seagate forum was 06-19-2009 06:50 AM. Up to the writing of this review, there are more than 31 pages from thousands of people reporting the issue with clicking noise & drive failure on Expansion boxes. Solution & your options: 1 - If you just bought an Expansion, return it while you can get your money back. 2 - If it is under warranty, do not return it to Seagate. If you do, you end up with another defective drive that you have to send back again & each time cost $15.00 to $30.00 just for shipping (inside U.S.). Do one of the following: A) Buy a new non-Seagate external enclosure (many good brand are in the market between $14.00 to $39.00). Take the drive out of Seagate Expansion enclosure and place it on the new one (this may void your warranty, but it is a permanent fix). Yes, You have break the tabs to open it. Seagate purposely made it non-serviceable. B) If you can find a PCB that matches the Seagate Expansion box power & USB port openings, replace the PCB. In my case, I replaced the case with a new enclosure. C) Never buy a Seagate drive. They have been less than sincere & straight forward with their customers & continue to sell a defective product that they are well aware of it. 236 of 262 people found the following review helpful. Seagate Expansion: Couldn't stand it even for a day By Chris H. Last week, I purchased a Seagate Expansion 1.5TB drive. I had read the product reviews on Amazon, however it seemed respectable enough. Last Friday, the drive arrived. Upon initial set-up, I noticed that it seemed extremely loud. After copying some data to it as a test, it began to make a very loud clicking sound. I have worked with many hard drives, and the sound was out of the ordinary (and, dare I say, reminiscent of the old Iomega click of death). Upon calling Seagate, the technician warned me that the drive was probably in its death throes and to make sure I had a backup of anything on it. I put the product back in its box, and sent it back to Amazon, who issued a replacement. When the replacement arrived, all seemed well at first. It formatted just fine, and seemed quiet and

Kiley Function: Given that my computer can handle port multiplying for USB and eSATA, this has met all expectations and performed excellently. The drives stay cool, I've no complaints about function. Construction: Solid construction. The drives never jostle (and I port this thing around multiple times per week). The power input, as mentioned by others, is shaped at a right angle and I frequently see the cable bend to undue stress because of it. The lifespan of the power supply will surely be less than the device because of this and the way I use it. The only other complaint I have is the fan. On the lowest speed, mine makes an unsteady, rather loud hum. On high, it's steady and loud as expected. Performance: Copying data from a 5400rpm 2.5" drive on my computer to 5400rpm 3.5" drive in the enclosure, I see speeds around 60-100 MB/s on eSATA and around 25-30MB/s on USB, depending on file size and whatnot. From drive to drive within the enclosure it's usually 90+ MB/s. Please note that these speeds are highly dependent upon my drives, my SATA controller, and various other external factors. I'm glad I bought it. 20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Good Value, No Sleep/Idle for Drives, Not for NAS Backup By Paul This is a fantastic value. For under $100 (as of 2/2011) you get a solidly built, compact, 4-bay SATA enclosure that supports both eSata and USB 2.0. There are a couple of downsides to the Mediasonic 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 and eSATA Pro Box 4-Bay Enclosure HF2-SU2S2 (Black): * Although there is a sync mode that will turn the unit off or put it to sleep it only works when the device is connected to also goes to sleep or gets turned off. That's fine if you're using it with a PC but with a NAS it means that it stays on all of the time with the disks spinning. That's a waste of disk and energy if it's being used once in a while. * There's a *really* bright blue activity light that will easily light up a room at night and is even visible from the street! * The power connector is on the side. Makes for messy wiring and is kinda annoying. You should also know that your host sata interface needs to support multiplexing or you'll be able to access the first drive via sata (not a problem with USB). That's just a limitation of this product and it's clear from the documentation. Just an FYI. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Amazingly small foot print! By rbhatta This thing is amazingly small for an enclosure that holds 4 SATA Hard disk drives, I am truly impressed by the build quality of materials and workmanship, Installing Hard disks is easy just attach the handle with screws that they provide (Hey they even give you a screw driver!) and presto! You are ready to use your hard drives via USB or ESATA interface. Accessing all the 4 drive bays using USB 2.0 interface is no big issues, Most of the operating systems will directly support this without any need for additional drivers. However, if you plan on using the ESATA interface you will need to plan and attach this to an ESATA port that supports Port Multiplier w/ FIS-based switching in order to access 4 HDDs simultaneously. Some newer motherboards easily does this, Please do some research with your motherboard documentation and or update the drivers for your onboard SATA/ESATA interfaces to support this feature. If you motherboard does not support Port Multiplier w/ FIS-based switching in order to access multiple HDDs simultaneously, You can buy a PCIe or PCIMCIA based add-on controller card that must explicitly say that it can support Port Multiplier w/ FIS-based switching in order to access the 4 HDDs simultaneously. Amazon sells a lot of these cards for various applications (Desktop PC or Laptops) Desktop solution : one of them is Syba SD-SA2PEX-2E PCIe 2x e-SATA Ports with SIL3132 Chipset, if you want just RAID 0 or 1 or if you want more

However, the reseller (Amazon) failed to package the OEM drive in manufacturer approved packaging as described in Western Digital's Warranty Services section of their website. I was disappointed to find that the drive had shifted in the two Airspeed Inflatable Packaging pillows and the drive was in direct contact with the cardboard box. In this position, the force of any fall would have been absorbed by the drive its self instead of the packaging. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. WD 500GB Internal Drive - Good Price - Remember it's OEM By Sea Star I really did some research on drives and wanted something reliable after a bad experience with a Seagate drive. I decided on a 500GB as a second drive on my PC and the price and shipping situation with Amazon was primo. I ordered this hard drive with two-day delivery and received it packaged very well and in good working order. I've only had it a few days and it's working fine, so I don't have much to review about the performance at this time except to say it is quiet and has pretty fast access with the 32MB cache. I installed this as a second internal drive on an HP Pavillion a6257c desktop computer that's about two years old and is running Vista. It was recognized immediately by the Bios, Device Manager and by the Disk Management, but I had to use the Disk Management to actually install and format (two separate steps) the drive before it appeared in the My Computer listing for access. This only took a few minutes, and the steps are very easily followed and well written by a previous reviewer (Sandstone)so I won't repeat them here again. The important thing to remember here is that this is an OEM drive. It doesn't come with anything for the installation, just the drive itself although some people said they received screws. You'll need a SATA (Serial ATA) cable that is usually red but can be other colors and a power cable (in my case I needed a 4 to 15 pin power cable converter because my PC only had 4 pin power connectors and the WD drive requires 15). I had empty SATA slots on my board, so that was no problem. You may have to get split cables if you don't have sufficient connectors in your computer for the added drive. My hard drive cage also had a space for a second drive, but I still had to provide my own screws. Luckily I had some in my Belkin Computer Tool Kit that fit. So, if you're putting this internally as a second drive, make sure you have the proper available hookups in your computer, then buy the appropriate power and SATA signal data cables to hook the drive to your computer and make sure they are long enough to reach. Also purchase computer screws similar to whatever is holding in your main hard drive to secure the new drive in your hard drive slot. My hard drive case required screws with fairly flat heads as the cage sits right up against the side of the computer case. If you don't have a hard drive slot, you may have to get brackets to use in your other slots in your PC. If you're replacing your main drive, you should have all the accessories needed. I have seen some minor feedback about this drive being loud, but I cannot hear mine at all. It's really quiet; but, of course, it's secured quite tightly into the drive case so that might be a factor. Overall -- it's a great drive for the money and I'm quite happy with the quality and speed of the drive as well as the Amazon shopping and shipping experience. If I have any issues down the line, I'll update this feedback. 18 of 24 people found the following review helpful. WARNING: THIS IS NOT RAID ARRAY COMPATABLE! Huge 2 TB storage in a compact high style case (smaller in person than appears in photos). 2. Option for RAID set up for safety/data redundancy (the option I chose) 3. Comes with back-up software... I've got it set to copy my entire drive every Sunday at midnight. 4. Quiet and cool... Love the subtle blue under-chassis lighting 5. Comes with all four cables! 6. Mac *and* PC friendly (apparently not all are... see some of the larger capacity Western Digital drive reviews) 7. Only four stars as is pricey compared to the bargain 2TB units out there... but if you value quality, quiet, cool, cables n' crave confidence, this may be the drive for you! 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A great drive By Paul Smyres I've had this a couple of months and I'm happy with it. I did a lot of research before I bought the drive. I'm a photographer and needed to have a large drive to hold and protect my thousands of digital images, plus back up two Mac's. I set it up as a Raid 1 ( duplicate of everything, but slower speed ) Follow the instructions carefully, Raid 0 is the default setup ( faster speed, one copy of everything ). I like that it has several types of input options, USB, firewire, and SATA. I use Firewire most of the time. I can use the USB to plug into my Apple Airport home network to access it wirelessly, too. I like the design, and it's quiet. It has a standby fan shut-off to cut down on electricity. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. No hassles, just works great. By Thomas Lombardi After reading reviews of other Raid products I decided to spend a few extra dollars and buy this one. I have a Macbook Pro and a lot of HD home video and needed a more secure place to store it all. This drive was simple to set up as a mirrored array, the drive is pretty quiet and has a fan that ramps up as needed. The drive comes set up for Raid 0 (striped), if you want Raid 1 (mirrored) make sure you follow the directions before plugging it in. See all 12 customer reviews...

Seagate GoFlex Drive & USB 3.0 Desktop Adapter By Bruce Macdougall I bought a 2TB GoFlex drive from Costco, and the USB 3.0 adapter (base) from Amazon. Everything works fine and performance with the USB 3.0 adapter is noticeably better than USB 2.0. I have only two minor issues: 1. The drive + base is not very stable. It is tall and narrow which means it will topple over with the slightest bump. 2. The USB 3.0 base comes with a brand new "international" power supply. While this might be fine for some, it made me wonder why the new base even came with a power supply when the original unit already had one? That said, the snap in plug adapters worked well. I just threw out all the non-US adapters. Amazon's price for the USB 3.0 adapter was better than the stores but I wish Seagate would just use the 3.0 base as their only option. A USB 3.0 device will work fine plugged into a USB 2.0 port, so there is no reason for Seagate to offer a separate adapter other than as an excuse to sell you something else. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Upgraded from USB 2 By Plankwing I find Arthur's review to be interesting ... this base is for the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex (SFG, my abreviation) product so it wasn't designed to be used with a bare hard drive as it appears he has done. I bought the SFG 2tb with USB2 base before the USB3 base became available. It is literally plug and play. The only evidence that it is present is (a) the tray icon and (b) intense periodic backups bring the computer to a standstill for a few seconds. When this USB3 adapter became available, I bought it. Upgrade requires installation of the PCI board, exchanging the bases, and using the power supply and USB3 cable included in the kit. Note that the kit includes power plugs for the variety of plugs found world-wide; India? Australia? Europe? where ever you are, just use the appropriate power plug on the universal adapter. Cool! Installation routine, once the base is changed, etc., is: The USB3 cable is FIRST plugged into an existing USB2 port, the software/drivers are installed, THEN the USB3 cable is moved from the USB2 port to the USB3 port and it is up and running. In my experience, the upgrade speeds up the periodic backup process by approx 2.5x. What did take about 10 seconds per episode is now about four seconds; the "standstill" during the process is still obvious, just not as long. No problems whatsoever, only the "standstill" being a bit of a frustration; thus four stars. (I notice the "verified purchase" does not show up, but this was bought via Amazon.) 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Still slow USB connections speeds via 3.0USB By Nick I have several computers, one PC that has a built in USB 3.0 direct on the board and the other uses a PCI express card. Transfer speeds start off very quick around 80 Mb/s but within 15 seconds drop to 16 MB/s. Both my computers are new, both have Intel i7 processors and over 8 gigs of RAM. In my opinion, split open the case, take the hard drive out and either use as an internal drive or buy a SATA enclosure. When I placed it into an enclosure I maintain 60 MB/s connections via eSATA. Very nice external drive By Bertilak This is a newer version of an earlier model that is very similar (LaCie 301827U d2 Quadra 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Disk). I talked to a salesman at J&R Computers and he told me the only difference is that this model has 32MB cache and the older model has 16MB cache. The older model has over 100 reviews so you may want to look there as well. COST: This costs more than some other external hard drives of the same capacity but there are good reasons: You are paying for the multiple interfaces (eSATA, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 with second daisy-chain port, USB 2.0) and the complete set of cables that come with it. The eSATA support is 3Gbits compared to 1.5Gbits for less expensive drives. The well-constructed case may also add some cost. I'd like to think that the included disk is of a higher quality too, but have no way to judge. PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS: The drive has been working fine for about a month now. It feels VERY sturdy. It is heavier than other external drives I am familiar with. It is only slightly warm to the touch when running. The all-metal construction with the exterior ridges seems to do a good job of keeping it cool. It is VERY quiet. If not for the blue light I couldn't tell that it was turned on. Even when I put my ear right next to it I can hear very little. Even when it is actively seeking it is basically silent. There is no fan. It does make a few noises when starting up or shutting down. I THINK one of the noises I hear is the heads parking and unparking. I am using it as a USB 2.0 device right now. I have an eSATA card on order and will update this review to let you know how that goes. UPDATE: The drive works just fine when connected via eSATA. I have not done any performance experiments. It does have a slot in the back for one of those Kensington cable locks. I didn't see this mentioned in the sales literature, although other external drive manufacturers make a big deal of it. There are a lot of those locks available, especially if you consider the clones. The following is probably the best: Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Notebook Computer Lock with Keys (PC/Mac). Oh, yes, one more thing. The blue light reminds me of HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey, except that HAL had a red eye. UPDATE 15 Sep 2010: There are a number of reviews mentioning power supply failures, and I don't want to deny that there is a problem here. I do want to point out that I have had mine for 22-23 months now and it is still running strong. My setup includes an APC BACK-UPS RS BR1500LCD 1500VA/865W UPS System and both the LaCie and its power supply sit out in the open so get plenty of air circulation. My usage is for daily backup via the eSATA interface, so although it is powered on 24/7/365 it only gets about an hour (probably less) of active use each day. 72 of 73 people found the following review helpful. Great Piece of Equipment By zugzwang I finally received my LaCie hard drive. This is a well made piece of equipment - it has a solid, heavy construction and an elegant appearance. I was relieved that the light is a pleasant shade of blue and is not bright at all, unlike other hard drive lights with blindingly bright LEDs. This drive is not silent, though it is fairly quiet. I can clearly hear the drive running from several feet away but it's not disturbing. The fellow who said that he can't hear it with his ear right next to it, well the drive must not have been running at that moment. I'm using this as a Time Machine backup drive. With a Firewire 400 connection to my old G5 iMac, it backed up 270 GBs in under 5 hours. At first the Time Machine backup was dog slow. Then I remembered to turn off my virus software, AND most important, I changed the Spotlight preferences by selecting the Privacy tab and adding my backup drive to prevent Spotlight from indexing/searching it. After that the

Bulk I bought this Western Digital WD Elements 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAR3200ABK-NESN (Black) last week at, I regret to say, Target - not Amazon. Target had it "on sale" at $59.95, an irresistible price. This unit works perfectly with Linux (both Ubuntu Linux - which is my main computer's operating system - and the modified-Xandros Linux found on the ASUS Eee PC 1000 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB Solid State Drive, 20 GB Eee Storage, Linux, 6 Cell Battery) Pearl White which I own) and, naturally, Windows. (It is "pre-formatted" for Windows - it has some programs incorporated which I of course immediately deleted as I do not use Windows.) This unit will also work perfectly with the Apple Mac operating system (Windows and Mac compatibility are specified on the box.) As another reviewer has mentioned, it may be necessary to format the drive for use with a Mac. Used with a Linux computer, no formatting or any other special operations are necessary. Just plug it in and you're instantly "on!" (Of course, this same comment about no formatting necessary also applies to Windows computers, though, the first time you use it, a Windows machine may take a few seconds to recognize the new drive.) Packaged with the unit is a standard USB connection cord (supports v. 1.1 and 2.0 and, in addition to connecting to your computer for data transfer, it also powers the unit; no other external power supply is necessary) as well as the usual warranty, etc., information. In addition a CD containing the operating manual is included. I have not looked at this - really however, what is there to know about how to use this external drive? Just plug it into your computer! - that is, of course, if you use these drives as I use them: as storage units only. (I now own quite a few of these drives.) I find that, especially with Ubuntu Linux, that it is very easy to copy everything in one's "Home" folder to one of these external drives and, should it become necessary to reinstall the operating system, it is quite easy to restore all of your documents, music, pictures, etc. from the external drive. It is also possible to store one's music, videos, audio books, etc. on one of these drives thus freeing up space from your computer's hard drive. (That's why I have several of these things!) Naturally, the same uses I mention above are also available to Windows or Mac users. These portable external hard drives are very useful and this one, being a simple, basic, unit, is all one truly needs, in my opinion, if your reasons for buying one are the same as mine. I do suggest that, if you do not have an urgent need for one of these drives, or if you are buying an "extra" or "spare" unit, you wait until you see a really good "sale" price either on Amazon or elsewhere. Like all Western Digital external hard drives that I own it is very well-made and, with reasonable care, should last a very long time. (My oldest Western Digital external drive - 40 GB, "huge" at the time I bought it - is over five years old, still in use, and still going strong.) In my own personal experience the company is reputable, responsive and VERY customer-oriented. I highly recommend this unit. 70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. A great little package By Speedway Girl I retired my little Passport for use solely as a backup for my MacBook, since they had the exact same size hard drive. So then it was time to shop for a replacement to move data back and forth between my PC's and Mac's. There was a great deal for this little gem that I saw on [...] from Dell, so I scooped it up. It seems like a great drive. It is substantially faster than my Passport, so that was a plus. It moves back and forth from machine to machine, up and down the stairs, gets carried around in the briefcase and

Why pay for someone else to build one (one size fits does not fit all) when building your own is not too difficult and you can build with quality parts tailored to your own specific needs. Case in point, the WD 640GB HDD. Large hard drive prices are economical right now. Generally speaking, the larger the drive, the less the cost per gigabyte (GB). At Amazon's prices the WD 640GB drive was about $10 bucks more than the WD Caviar 16 320 GB drive with the same cache. Western Digital has recently color coded their drives: Black (high performance), Blue (mainstream) and Green (no brainer: ecologically friendly-for a hard drive). Where does marketing get these ideas? The Caviar 16 640GB falls into the Blue category. It is amazingly fast and quiet, thanks to its 16 MB cache and 3 Gb/s transfer rate. The technology is interesting in that WD utilized two 320GB platters which gives this drive an edge as compared to say 750 GB drives with similar cache size. The drive itself is nearly silent and the quietest HDD I have used. Its rated over 90MB/sec read and write speeds, which is very fast. Yes there are faster hard drives, but for the money this drive is an excellent choice. My only complaint: the drive is warranted for 3 years not 5. Amazon had the lowest price I found, and shipped the drive quickly. Turn around time from placing the order to delivery at my door step was four days. Stable, reliable and excellent price to performance ratio, this drive is a great choice for everyday computing needs. 33 of 42 people found the following review helpful. Right price By Jerry L. Rainsdon The hard drive worked great I had to go online to get the product manuals and purchase the cables since it is a SATA II drive and my computer supports SATA I it took me several hours to make it work but once I figured out how to slow down the drive with the jumper which was not supplied it was a plug and play process. Make sure you know your system specifications before you order and get the needed cables and jumper & Screws all at once. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. WD Caviar Blue 640GB OEM Drive By sc The drive is pretty fast and allows for allot of storage room. Amazon needs to learn how to pack a hard drive for shipment! The hard drive arrived in a box with a static bag around it and no protective padding at all!!! My drive is warrented until 2012 from WD and it is already making noise upon spin up. So it looks like I am going to have to ship it back to WD for replacement. I would not purchase this item from Amazon again not because of the drive; but because of the horrible packaging the drive was shipped in. See all 130 customer reviews...

Just an insane price. Thanks, Amazon. The drives are bulk/OEM which means they come with nothing. Just the drives and the anti-static bags. Do your homework. If you want software to hold your hand through a hard drive install, do not buy this drive. If you need screws, rails, or cables, do not buy this drive. If you want to save some cash while getting an absolutely absurd amount of disk space with SATA2 (3Gbps) plus 32MB of cache (older drives have 4-16MB), then get these drives. They are beasts. After the Seagate fiasco, I vowed to go with an alternative. Western Digital came through with these monster hard drives. Get one. Get two. You will not be disappointed. 56 of 60 people found the following review helpful. Faster, slightly more "clatter" By J. Poorman I bought this drive for my Mac Pro (Mac Pros, at least when I bought mine 3 years ago came from Apple with WD 250 GB hard drives). I have installed about 10 WD drives, upgrading this time form the WD 500GB drives, and this drive with its 32MB cache is indeed a bit faster (10-20 percent) than the 500GB. The ONLY downside at all to this drive is that is a bit louder when the heads are seeking, with the drive seek "clatter" more noticeable than the previous 500GB Western Digitals I just replaced (I needed more storage). Not bad tho--it's just that my Mac Pro is absolutely silent and I notice the least little additional sound and never really heard the 500's, the 1TB I hear now--but don't get me wrong it's not bad and there certainly is no drive "whine" when idling--these are quite drives. I guess whizzing across 1TB of data is a little more strenuous on the heads. I have bought about 20 Western Digital drives since 2000 and not one has failed on me--unlike LaCie--ick. 179 of 204 people found the following review helpful. Beginner's guide to adding a second hard drive By Sandstone This is for people (like me) who've never done this before... I use Windows Vista and an HP desktop computer. 1. Ordered this drive, which arrived promptly. Drive was well packed with foam. As expected, it didn't come with anything else. It works fine, and to me it doesn't seem noisy. 2. Ordered Tripp Lite P940-19I Serial ATA (SATA) Signal Cable (19 Inches). Note: older computers won't support SATA. If you have a newer computer, it should work. SATA cables are red and about 1 cm wide, the older cables are about an inch wide and silvery. If your hard drive uses these, don't get this drive. 3. Ordered Tripp Lite P946-12I Serial ATA (SATA) Dual Power Adapter Cable - 4pin/2x15pin SATA - 12in. This is a "Y" adapter (optimistically planning for my next hard drive!), but a straight one would also work. I found out after it arrived I already had a SATA power adapter in my case. However, it wouldn't have reached with the available wiring length, so I still ended up using this. 4. In my case, the drive requires 4 screws to install it. These are short screws with large flat heads, the heads form a sort of "rail" for it to glide into the rack on. On opening my case, I realized that HP had thoughtfully provided extra screws for future upgrades! The drive does not come with screws. 5. Installed drive in rack, plugged in the two cables, no problem. 6. Get to Windows. Your new hardware icon should say "locating... installing" or something like that. 7. Go to Start-Computer (right click on Computer) - Manage - then to Disk Management. Find your new drive at the bottom of the screen, and click over the "drive 1" (or whatever) designation to make it "online". Then right click the long color band over the drive's partition graphic and start the "new simple volume" wizard. Stayed with the defaults. That's about it, everything worked the first time. After the drive was up and running, I decided to error-check the drive from Windows Explorer
