The Green Series, The Blue Series, and the Black Series and also they have the Velociraptor High Performance 10,000RPM Drives. The Green is the most power friendly, usually slowest spinning drive, slower spin usually equates to slower access times and they are used mostly in home servers/Tivo/DVR any many other scenarios where low power consumption/low noise is important. The Blue series is a step up from the Green, usually offers a 16MB buffer, drive then is overall faster as more data can be stored in the drive's local memory. This unit of course has 64MB of memory, so it is great for access times on files that your system uses a lot. Dual Processors offload some of the processing from the CPU. The Black Series drive has 5 year warranty which for a drive this big and the usage you will be getting out of it, is a long time as in 5 years people will probably be buying 5-10 Terabyte hard drives as the norm, probably even larger drives as the new 3D Data storage technology is introduced and of course able to be utilized by the masses. In my opinion, for the people looking for a fast affordable drive, the Black Series are the best there is. If you are looking for anything faster, you will be considering Velociraptors or even the more expensive SSD's out there. For the best balance for price/performance/storage space, the black series is the way to go. I have 2 of the 1.5TB, 2 of the 2TB, and an SSD in my windows Home Server and love the Black Series of the WD Caviar drives. Davis Drive shows up to BIOS and to Windows 2003 R2 SP2 on a PowerEdge SC440. Capacity is correct. Spindle is spinning. Attempts to put a partition on the drive fail with "Internal error". Tried three SATA-II ports on 2 different controllers. Tried Acronis (silently fails) and Windows' "Disk Managmenet". If I Plug this into a Linux system, I can partition it, but I can't format it. Take it back to Windows and try to format it, and it tells me "The Format Did Not Complete Successfully". If I remove the partition, it shows removed, but if I exit Disk Manager, then come back, the partition is back. If I assign a drive letter to the partition, it goes away as soon as I exit Disk Manager. If I assign a drive letter during partition create, it fails because the partition wasn't actually removed during "Delete Partition". I've found lately that not all drives are engineered the same. Barracuda 5900, Constellation 7200, and WD Enterprise FBY* drives seem to be happy and stable in all systems. WD Caviar of any type, and Barracuda 7200 seem to be unstable or fail quickly. This is just my experiences. I haven't set up labs to test everything, but I shouldn't have to. Dependable drive at a good price By Personne I put this drive into service about six months before posting this review. Before using the drive, I ran it through my own standard torture suite which includes a multipass surface test. The drive passed without difficulty: SMART tests indicated it was still comfortably within thermal tolerance--even after more than a day of full-time activity. After half a year of serving as my main system drive (Mac Pro), I can report that it's been dependable with quite acceptable performance. I've always bought WD drives with confidence. Great drive -- Amazon packaging AOK By pluto1999 First, this is a state of the art, newly introduced drive from WDC. In my opinion it is the best general-use drive you can get at this price point. Prior to my purchase, I read several negative reviews from prior customers who voiced dissatisfaction with Amazon's packaging of OEM drives. Any chance of damage in shipping would indeed be reason to shop elsewhere for such a sensitive item, but on one such page of ranting and frustration I saw a note from Amazon that they had recently addressed these concerns, so I proceeded to order the drive. Here's the latest and I hope final word on this issue: Problem solved. The drive arrives sealed in an anti-static bag, secured by two end-mounted shock absorbing plastic caddies, then double-boxed with the usual sealed air padding. The redundant packing system appears to be well-designed and the drive has been working like a champ. Fast but coffee pot loud! By A. D. Minton I've been using Western Digital hard drives since getting into computers in 1998. In fact I've never owned anything but WD hard drives (from 4.3gig to 1TB). In all my years of using them I've only had 2 go bad, though they never "completely" failed. This speaks of Western Digital's consistency in reliability. With that said I love the Caviar Blacks and have 3 of them in my system - 500, 750, and now the new 1TB SATA 3 (64Meg cache). While there is a noticeable speed gain over my previous 1TB Caviar Black (32Meg), the previous version was/is extremely quiet! This new SATA 3 drive is LOUD! It sounds like a percolating coffee pot at its highest boiling point, especially during boot-up or accessing files. Very annoying, especially if it's the noisiest part of your system! I just put an i7 system in a Cooler Master HAF X case which has 4 fans - 1 Front bottom 230mm 700RPM 19dBA (Red LED), 1 Top 200mm 7000RPM 19dBA, 1 Rear 140mm 1200RPM 19dBA. My Noctua CPU cooler fan tops out at 1200RPM load at 19dBA as well. At idle my ATI 4890 video card fan runs around 27 percent, making it in-audible above the other fans. My point.... My case is extremely quiet.... Save for WD's new Caviar Black SATA 3 HD!!! Because of this I'm seriously considering going back to my previous 1TB 32meg cache Caviar Black HD. BTW this is a replacement drive as I thought the first drive was faulty due to the same noise. With that I called Western Digital about this issue.... and to make a long story short, they say this is normal and that drive wasn't designed with noise in mind, that if you want a "quieter" drive, get the Caviar Blue. Make of that what you will.... All I know is that the older 32mge cache Caviar Black drives ARE quieter than their 64meg cache cousins. Those looking for quieter WD drives might consider looking elsewhere (Blue or Green series) if noise is a factor over speed. 4 stars. Edit. Went back to my previous drive because of the noise. By Sandooz Maradi Drive makes loud clicking noise & eventually fails. The symptom: Drive works fine for the first few GB's, and once it gets somewhere around 50 to 300 GB, it starts making loud clicking noise. The more data added to the drive the more frequent the clicking noise become and eventually the drive fails. Analysis: As the first few sectors of the platter / platters, the traveling distance (from the edge of palter to the center) for the head arm is not that great. But as more data gets written to the disk, inner sectors of platters gets occupied with data. That's when the problem starts. Without going into technical details, the issue here is not the drive. It is the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that is installed in these external enclosures. This board regulates & provide power to the drive and in simple terms, there is not enough power for the disk to spin and for the head arm to extend far to reach inner sectors of the platter / platters . I have tried many solutions recommended on the internet, including a youtube video posted by a person identified in this video as Bruce. None has worked. Some others suggested to change the usb cable, others suggested a firmware upgrade, some suggested to send the drive back to Seagate for replacement. Some people has done that but they got a new replacement drive that did the same clicking noise, and had to be sent back again. Do not waste your time on these suggestions, because I have tried them all before I started looking & analyzing the problem myself. Seagate is well aware of this issue, but not only they are down playing the extent of this problem, they continue to sell these defective external boxes. In fact the first time this issue was reported on Seagate forum was 06-19-2009 06:50 AM. Up to the writing of this review, there are more than 31 pages from thousands of people reporting the issue with clicking noise & drive failure on Expansion boxes. Solution & your options: 1 - If you just bought an Expansion, return it while you can get your money back. 2 - If it is under warranty, do not return it to Seagate. If you do, you end up with another defective drive that you have to send back again & each time cost $15.00 to $30.00 just for shipping (inside U.S.). Do one of the following: A) Buy a new non-Seagate external enclosure (many good brand are in the market between $14.00 to $39.00). Take the drive out of Seagate Expansion enclosure and place it on the new one (this may void your warranty, but it is a permanent fix). Yes, You have break the tabs to open it. Seagate purposely made it non-serviceable. B) If you can find a PCB that matches the Seagate Expansion box power & USB port openings, replace the PCB. In my case, I replaced the case with a new enclosure. C) Never buy a Seagate drive. Seagate Expansion: Couldn't stand it even for a day By Chris H. Last week, I purchased a Seagate Expansion 1.5TB drive. I had read the product reviews on Amazon, however it seemed respectable enough. Last Friday, the drive arrived. Upon initial set-up, I noticed that it seemed extremely loud. After copying some data to it as a test, it began to make a very loud clicking sound. I have worked with many hard drives, and the sound was out of the ordinary (and, dare I say, reminiscent of the old Iomega click of death). Upon calling Seagate, the technician warned me that the drive was probably in its death throes and to make sure I had a backup of anything on it. By Honest Guy NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED: I've watched the issue with these drives carefully for about 2 months. It looks like Seagate solved the problem and that a vocal few were ever really affected. By few I mean relative to the thousands sold. And I am not defending Seagate. This whole fiasco was unacceptable. MY SYSTEM: I picked up 8 of these drives. I'm running them in 4 separate DLink DNS-321 RAID boxes. I've copied about 4TB of data back and forth across them for days. My only firmware update needed was for the DLink so that it could properly handle the new 1.5TB drives. In the end I believe all is well with both the drives and the DLink DNS-321. I will of course update this review immediately if I see any problems. PERFORMANCE: We are able to watch movies from this drive arrangement on 3 computers simultaneously across a 100mb network from the same drive while adding new files to the drive from a 4th computer. This means I can be adding movies unattended to the system while watching an Epic Man movie on the plasma in the living room... while the kids are watching Monsters Inc in the bedroom... and the wife is off watching some chic flick in the Den. :) The combination of DLink and these 1.5TB drives is fantastic and seems as stable as the WD 1TBs I was using previously. PROPER DIAGNOSIS: Don't confuse your drive DIEING after a week with the previous firmware problems of this particular drive. Blame the vendor that shipped the drive like it could bounce ! ON A SIDE NOTE: I will say I am sick of Amazon, Tiger and other vendors shipping hard drives like they are indestructible ROCKS. Even if they arrive working, this inadequate packaging is certainly taking years off the life of our drives. One of my 8 arrived DEAD as a brick thanks to this nonsense. The other 10 are used as back up drives in a drop in SATA adapter. No failures since 2 in the first few weeks, I believe due to poor packaging. About 6 of my drives came with the BAD firmware. I never had issues with that either. Call me blessed. I just think the DNS-321 and these drives work very well together. UPDATE: Jan 8 2011 Another year passes and most of my 1.5TBs have all been pulled from DNS-321 RAID boxes and used as loose backup drives in a drop in SATA adapter. I've replaced them with the larger Seagate 2TB drives for larger capacity. NO FAILURES OF EITHER DRIVE 1.5TB or 2TB ! I have a couple Hitachi's and WD 2TBs. The Seagate drives are quieter and come off sleep in my RAID boxes faster than the other brands. All are used for video streaming over a network and do a fantastic job. Most helpful customer reviews 140 of 145 people found the following review helpful. LaCie 301304U By Larry A. Chafin I attached this 1-TB USB external drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac. The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition. I used the Mac's disk utilities, and created two partitions. This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then begins deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server. The rest of the setup was fast. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine. The Time Machine software asked me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was decided on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since. How simple is that? Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb. Even with the USB connection (I think firewire, which is available on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% faster), I found the file transfer time more than acceptable. I have run video from the drive with no issues. Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and graphic images to and from the drive, and again no issues. Beautiful & solid design By gee three pea oh-a This was purchased as external backup - it's quiet and lovely. The blue LED reflects off the surface (desktop) so you know when it's in use. Easy to use backup software included, but not robust enough for a power user or tech-geek (use cobian!). Pros: great case, good size (a largish paperback; slightly narrower, lower and longer than my Mac Mini), on/off button, small adapter with a regular plug, no fan, relatively low light output from the front indicator. Cons: louder than other fanless drives (compared to the Seagate eSATA 750), ambient light flickers with drive activity (I'd prefer a constant light). Depends: only has USB. In my opinion, online images make it look bigger than it is. Check the dimensions. The smooth black case lacks prominent logos. They can be stacked, but only two. I assume this is for heat dissipation reasons. Why only 4 stars? Lacie's advertising claims it is "near-silent". Close, but not quite. UPDATE: 1 of these drives has failed as of 4/2009. Lam This is a very useful device for anyone with a bit of experience tinkering under the hood of a computer. The package includes: - the actual adapter itself, which provides an USB connection to 3 different types of hard drive connectors -- 5.25" / 3.5" IDE, 2.5" IDE, and SATA. - an IDE (4-pin MOLEX) power adapter. - one SATA-to-SATA data cable. - one IDE (4-pin MOLEX) power to SATA power adapter. - a mini-CD containing a manual and drivers. It is not necessary to install drivers in Windows ME / 2000/ XP and above systems. Good device for techies By DrZ I bought two devices of this kind, one is this Vantec USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter and the other one is Bytecc, which is a little less cumbersome to use. A device like this is a must-have for techies and pros who work with multiple hard disk drives and frequently need to quickly connect an external drive to a PC, regardless whether it's 2.5 or 3.5", SATA or IDE. When I was buying the first one, I chose the box which weighted less, and apparently that was not a relevant reason, but coincidentaly I made a good choice. Disadvantages of this device compared to Bytecc's one: - More parts to carry with, more complex connection - Needs a manual, which is, although mostly decent technical writing, printed in four pages per one printout without any collating or order - The power connector (provides the same connection as the standard IDE drive type of power connector usually found inside of PCs) is connected to the power supply with a very do-it-yourself style cable which works but it's rugged with cables sticking out of it and it doesn't have the finish or an appeal of a good quality product. - It needs several different power cables/adapters and it's easy to lose some Advantages: - Unlike the power connectors, the data part/connector looks a bit more sturdy/compact compared to Bytecc - The SATA drive data connection is done via a regular SATA data cable, so it would work with any SATA drives with non-standard distance between the power and data connector (I haven't seen any like that yet and I've worked with both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives). The USB and AC power supply cables on both devices are too short and could be at least 3' longer. Worked As Advertised By PDK I recently had a WinXP machine die, and needed to transfer the hard drives to my new Vista computer. I also had a couple of hard drives left over from a Win98 machine from another computer that died 5 years ago. I was able to transfer all four drives with no problems whatsoever. I'd seen in another review, that someone was having problems with large files. I had a couple files as big as 20GB, and had no problems. Next level of hard drive size- 3TB Hitachi 64MB cache 7200 rpm SATA III By PB Picked up this drive last week via Amazon/J&R. Cheapest price I have seen so far on this drive- was watching price for weeks all over the web -coming down. Paid $179.00 including ship & no tax. Drive would be going into replace 1 of 4 Hitachi 2TB 7200 rpm in a 2008 3.0Mhz 8 core MacPro. Initially plugged drive into the external E-Sata port of a Highpoint E-Sata for Mac PCI 4 lane card with the bare drive sitting on my desk. Drive initialized fine by disk utility & formatted as GUID w/3 partitions. One a start-up partition- cloned to w/CCC & 2 separate data- disks- one used as scratch disk. Old Hitachi 2TB was running out of space- hard to believe right, given that there are 4 of them in the MacPro. Anyway had the drive on my desk for several hours copying data to it/ cloning etc. Never really became excessively warm at all. I do routinely have bare drives on my desk similarly so I get to listen & feel how warm & loud drives actually are. This drive in my estimation is the quietest drive I have ever seen (except a SSD LOL). Even copying continuous to it -I had to put my ear to it really to hear anything. Did not notice any real speed difference at this point since the highpoint e-sata bus is probably about 20% slower than the on board motherboard Sata bus. What I did notice was after copying & cloning all the partitions I had DiskWarrior rebuild the directories on the 3 partitions. Since I routinely rebuild similar partitions on the internal drives I have a good handle how long it would usually take on the Hitachi 2TB 7200 rpm current drives. Never saw directories rebuilt quite that fast. Not smoking, but noticeably faster. Maybe the 64 MB cache has something to do with it - don't know. Mounted in bay 2 -works fine, BOOTS fine. Temp about 3 degrees cooler than the 2TB Hitachi's. Seems similar to existing drives. I bought drive primarily to add that extra 1TB to the previous 8TB sum of drives because I really needed that additional space in that mix of drives/partitions. Ran some preliminary benchmarks w/Quickbench compared Hitachi 2Tb 7200 rpm 32MB cache 3 GPS w/the new Hitachi 3Tb 7200 rpm 64 MB cache 6GPS- both on the internal bus of MacPro- both partitioned w/3 approximate same percentage of individual drive sized partitions. The first & second partitions on the 3 TB drive has read & write avg transfer rates about 15 - 18% faster than the 2 TB, all things considered equal. The third partition on both drives have a nearly equal read & write avg speed. Overall it is a faster drive looking at it in this way. Price per gig at what I paid for the 3TB is around .060 , price per gig on a 2 TB Hitachi around $100.00 plus tax is around .0545 per gig. Pretty close- I am happy. I can see replacing the other 2 TB Hitachi's left in the MacPro eventually with the 3 TB version as the price drops. Pro's: * Price comparable to 2 TB 7200 rpm (per GB price) * Cool running & very quiet * Larger -50% increase capacity over 2 TB drive & 64 MB cache * 7200 rpm & SATA III * No hassle, issues with next generation drive on the Mac * IS BOOTABLE on Mac (contrary to amazon description-saw that description somewhere else,not true on MacPro, have not tried raiding yet. Fast, quiet and expensive By Dougie Fresh This is an OEM product so expect that it does not come with some other pieces that are required to install. You will need a SATA data cable and if your power supply doesn't have any, a SATA power cable. The drive comes in a plastic clamshell case that just snaps shut. A concern here was a lack of a anti-static bag and padding for the drive but it seemed to have arrived in fine condition. It was definitely easy to open. No scissors needed and not blood drawn from sharp plastic unlike a more recent experience trying to open a toy for my daughter. Kudos to Amazon on their packaging even if it made me a little nervous. This 2TB Seagate drive uses the latest SATA 6Gb/s technology (also known as SATA III) and is intended for use with the latest SATA 6Gb/s controllers. SATA 6Gb/s technology is a fairly recent thing so right now only the top-end motherboards have this technology and they are rather expensive. New SATA 6Gb/s PCI-e cards are also available and don't seem to have the premium price tag of the latest motherboards. However, thanks to the SATA standards, these aren't necessary to use a SATA 6Gb/s drive. These drives are backwards-compatible with SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s depending on the BIOS of the SATA controller. I was not able to test this drive with a SATA 6Gb/s controller because I do not own one but I was able to test it with both SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s controllers. In all cases, the drive was very quiet and quick though not noticeably quicker than any other hard drive for the applications I use. Though, again, the testing was limited to SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s controllers and was also done using applications that don't necessarily benefit from the extra speed such as watching videos and streaming data. Importantly, it was easy to install and was readily recognized by both Windows 7 and Windows Home Server, the former having a SATA 3Gb/s controller and the latter a SATA 1.5Gb/s controller. In one setup which I will detail in a bit the drive ran a bit too warm for my liking compared to the other drive in the system. At all times the drive was whisper quiet, no clicking of drive heads audible even during a long copy process. The first PC I tried this drive in was my home theater PC. This PC is housed in a case about the size of an audio-video receiver and sits inside my entertainment center. To install, I just needed a SATA data cable because my power supply had plenty of SATA power plugs left open and the screws that had come with the computer case. As with all SATA drives, it installed easily, Windows 7 recognized it right away and I was able to create a partition and quick format the drive via the Disk Manager interface. The drive had indeed arrived safe and sound despite the minimal packaging. SATA is such a godsend after the old days of setting jumpers, setting drive types in the BIOS, etc. The drive formatted to 1.8TB. No drive ever formats to the advertised capacity so this was no surprise. The OS needs room for the file allocation tables. I used 64K allocation blocks since I was testing this drive out with large video files. I then copied 600GB of video data to the drive which took a few hours over a gigabit network. There were no glitches in the copying and the data written to the drive played just fine in Windows Media Center as expected. I then shutdown the machine and opened up the PC to see how warm the drive was getting. It was definitely warmer to the touch than I would have liked. I am not sure if that's the drive itself or the confined space of the home theater PC. I did notice that the system drive however was not as warm. I think if I were to use this drive in a home theater PC or any confined space I would have concerns about the heat and be sure to have some additional cooling around the hard drive cages. Fast, quiet, solid By rsinj My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time. I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price. The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I won't have to rebuild the system drives from scratch. I know that the motherboards in my machines cannot make use of the 6Gb throughput, however, these drives are definitely faster than what they're replacing - older WD drives which indicate they are 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specs on the older drives indicate performance shouldn't be all that different, but it is, and for the better. I won't question it. The drive indicates you can jumper pins 5 and 6 to limit it to 3Gb, but I didn't understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it's working well. WD Blue 1T Drive - So far so good. By Fred Wampler I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow. The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I have loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around 3 weeks I'll assume it will not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I'll update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that a few failures were being reported. Not the long-term ones but the more likely out of the box ones. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain). UPDATE: OK. I put the case back together. The drive is not silent but it is pretty quiet. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Very nice. No problems with the drive at all. By Auggie Booted up with nary an issue on my 2008 Mac Pro 2x2.8 GHz 8-core, 12GB RAM. Simply plugged it in to a bay, used SuperDuper! to clone an existing WD 2TB (4k) drive that had OS 10.6.3 to this new drive, then after it completed, rebooted with it just fine. OS and file access works as expected. Software update upgraded OS to 10.6.5 error free, and apps seem to work without a hitch. Performance is as expected for a Caviar Green drive, so nothing new (or exciting) to report there. As with all new max capacity breaking hard drives, the price of entry is always much higher than the previous generations, so its value may not be worth its higher cost of admission for some (this is currently three times the cost of a comparable Caviar 2TB with only a 50% increase in capacity; hence my 4 stars). But if you need the highest possible capacity in a single drive, this is the only game in town at the moment. The price is inflated due to the inclusion of a SATA Host Bus Adapter. This adapter is not required for Mac computers, so I hope Western Digital will eventually release a TRULY "bare" drive (i.e. with OUT the adapter, as the current so-called "bare" drive from Amazon does include it) at a reduced price. Very Useful, with just a Pinch of Obnoxious Thrown In By Pyanfar Chanur After having serious problems with Western Digital's products, I decided to switch back to Seagate. 3 years ago Seagate had kind of bait-and-switched me the last time I bought drives and I was stinging from that, but research and recommendations brought me here to give them another try. The GoFlex desk is a very good back-up drive. Unlike other brands I have used, the drive is heavily shielded on the inside and multiple rubber cushions lock it firmly in place to minimize vibrations. After complaints about earlier models having a base that made it impossible to lay the drive sideways, Seagate have improved the design here--the base can hold the drive upright or you can lay it flat (which I recommend). They've also made the base modular, which is helpful in two ways: 1) If/when you decide to upgrade to USB 3.0, you don't have to buy a new drive - you can just buy a 3.0-compatible base. They even sell a version that comes with a USB 3.0 card to put in your PC if you need one. 2) If you keep two drives in order to have off-site backup, you can leave the base(s) plugged in. Undock the drive, take it with you, and plug it in to the other base. No need to drag cables and power adapters with you. While the GoFlex Desk is a good drive, it is still a USB drive. That means you could easily use it for things like playing music or videos, or saving important files directly to it, but you shouldn't expect to rely on it to grow your PC's storage space (such as installing games on it). As a Seagate rep confirmed for me, it's more for you to be able to back up files and restore from the drive in an emergency. I have two identically configured (one goes to work with me and the other stays home). If my house burns down I have a backup locked in a cabinet at my office. If I want to listen to my music at work, I've got my whole library with me. I've used this drive on Windows XP and Windows 7. As some of you may know, often the problem with large USB drives is the glut of software they expect you to load on your system in order to get things to work. I've discovered some good and bad news about that: The good news is, Windows 7 easily recognized my drive plug-and-play with no installation. It also easily attached to my HP MediaSmart Windows Home Server and could serve as a backup volume to backup your server in case the server itself blows up. The bad news is, I had a problem on one Windows 7 machine in which the drive decided to regularly disconnect itself and reconnect again--even in the middle of trying to copy files to it. Research turned up that this is a feature built in to the drive, and the only way to make it stop doing this is to install the software, go into the "Settings" link on the "Drive Manager", and change the "Automatically disconnect" setting to "Never". Fortunately, doing this once appears to write to the drive's firmware and you shouldn't see this again no matter where you connect it. I've been (un)fortunate enough to have to replace one of these units, so I also know about that process too. I can tell you that Seagate's staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I spent very little time on hold. Rather than the usual "You can't try anything with that drive to recover it or you'll void your warranty", they quickly assessed my skill level and told me to go ahead and try to recover my files. They even stayed on the line and helped me crack the case, pull the drive, and try to load it directly onto my PC to see if the problem was the controller (it wasn't). Once we determined mine was dead, I had three options: 1) pay Seagate to recover the files. If you ever had a dire need to do so, their data recovery hotline will tell you that the recovery is as full as possible. They'll talk about certified clean rooms and full examination and restoration, and they'll tell you up front

But after researching it, a lot of people don't like the Time Capsule because it dies almost always around 18 months. (right after the warranty expires) So I searched for an alternative and found the Western Digital My Book for Mac which I ended up buying. The hard drive is small, quiet, and didn't feel cheap. As soon as I plugged it into my Mac, a pop-up window appears asking if I would like to use it as an Apple TIme Machine. I clicked okay and it backed up everything on my computer to the My Book. The first back up takes several hours, but after that, backing up is very fast via USB 2.0 and with 1 TB of space, I don't have to worry about filling up with space soon. I mainly use this to back up my machine, but also use it to temporarily store large files to transfer from one mac to the next. Western Digital is known for reliable hard drives so in retrospect, this is probably a smarter purchase than buying a Time Capsule which was much more expensive. It comes bundled with it's own software, but I do not use it. Time Machine works well with this hard drive so I don't need any other type of software. Some people complained about not being able to delete the software, but its not a big deal. Whenever you plug in the hard drive, the software icon appears on your desktop, but you can unmount it or just ignore it. Time Machine By Tony B I have two other WD (500GB) drives for my Imac that I use for external storage, but I kept having problems running my Time Machine backups.(not enough space on External to backup). I ordered my 2TB WD from Amazon and hoped for the best. Well I received it and opened the box and plugged it in. I went to my System Preferences and clicked on Time Machine chose my new HD and set it for my backup. That was it, of course it is going to take a bit of time for the initial backup, but that was it. Average first impression By winningham.2 Just a quick chat about my initial impression of the WD My Book for Mac 1TB USB2 edition, but first, a word on my current environment. I have an early 2009 iMac with 4GB RAM running Mac OS X 10.6.x and plan on using this drive exclusively for TimeMachine backups. My first impression was actually pretty negative in that I was surprised at how low-rent the case is for the My Book. Compared to the aluminum skinned previous WD external USB/FW400 drive I have, this My Book represents the worst in Chinese manufacturing. Also contributing to my woes, is the included wall-wort being the typical "too big to fit any normal powerstrip" size. Again, all my previous external drives had external powerbricks with regular wall plugs making extremely convenient to plug into a powerstrip or UPS. With the overall aesthetics out of the way, I was happy to see a USB2 cable included for the single USB ported device and it seems to live up to the USB bandwidth rating one would expect. Yes, it would be nice if Apple had some type of eSATA connection for the iMacs and one must give up the first born child to afford a FW800 enclosure right now (about 40% more as I write this). But with all that being said, USB2 does fine for archival purposes and should be thought of as such. A note regarding the sound, this is not an especially loud drive but its far from silent. Two in a row have failed By Jonathan Birge I am not going to say there is something wrong with these drives, because at the end of the day I'm only one guy with a bad experience. I'll just offer my review here so that people get a full perspective. I have had two of these fail on me in a row, failing offline SMART tests. When it was working, the drive was very fast and quiet, though, so I can certainly understand the high marks people give these drives when they work. I think it is fair to say that Seagate is really running these at the ragged edge of what is possible. While the transfer rates can approach 90 Mb/s at the edge of the platter, according to a few quick tests I ran, the transfer rate fluctuates greatly, and the drive shows a pretty constant stream of software-corrected (ECC) errors. In other words, you're not losing data, but the data coming off the drive is on the border of what is readable, such that the drive needs to rely on error correction and/or rereads (hence the fluctuating speeds) to get the data off. I base these conclusions on the fact that tests of data on the inside of the platter (which has much less speed) are much more reliable (albeit slower). If you do decide to get one of these, do yourself a favor and backup (which you should do anyways, because all hard drives are subject to fail at any time). 189 of 216 people found the following review helpful. By stuffgeeekswant-dot-com Read the 5 pages of support issues on this drive in Seagate's forums or the 30+ pages in Apple's forums (and note: this isn't an issue exclusive to Apple systems)... or read the reviews at Newegg... this drive has MAJOR reliability issues. Don't believe all these 5 star reviews from people who reviewed the drive the day they installed it. It will run great when you first put it in. But 15-60 days in you will start hearing clunking noises. Your system will start freezing for a second or two here or there. The drive's load cycle count will start to skyrocket (to the point that even under "normal" use the drive will fail within a year by Seagate's own numbers). Seagate Momentus 7200.4 By Adel Sabry Elkhouly I was really worried to buy this drive cause of the reviews I read, but I bought it because of the reputation of seagate, as my old drive was seagate momentus too but 160 GB, I did replace it with this 500 GB model, and found no Vibration as many people claimed, the same as Hitachi, western Digital. I ordered two hard drives Installed the first in a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4 GHz SR, everything is perfect. I am not sure about the battery life after replacing the drive as I did upgrade the OS to snow leopard afterwords so I can't judge the battery level fairly. The second drive did install it in a White Macbook 2.4 Ghz, to replace a 5400rpm 160 GB Hitachi, there is a real significant difference between the old Hitachi, and this drive for sure, the Macbook is really flying now, boot times are faster, and applications load fast too. The over All performance did boast I guess 40% more. Two in a row have failed By Jonathan Birge I am not going to say there is something wrong with these drives, because at the end of the day I'm only one guy with a bad experience. I'll just offer my review here so that people get a full perspective. I have had two of these fail on me in a row, failing offline SMART tests. When it was working, the drive was very fast and quiet, though, so I can certainly understand the high marks people give these drives when they work. I think it is fair to say that Seagate is really running these at the ragged edge of what is possible. While the transfer rates can approach 90 Mb/s at the edge of the platter, according to a few quick tests I ran, the transfer rate fluctuates greatly, and the drive shows a pretty constant stream of software-corrected (ECC) errors. In other words, you're not losing data, but the data coming off the drive is on the border of what is readable, such that the drive needs to rely on error correction and/or rereads (hence the fluctuating speeds) to get the data off. I base these conclusions on the fact that tests of data on the inside of the platter (which has much less speed) are much more reliable (albeit slower). If you do decide to get one of these, do yourself a favor and backup (which you should do anyways, because all hard drives are subject to fail at any time). 189 of 216 people found the following review helpful. By stuffgeeekswant-dot-com Read the 5 pages of support issues on this drive in Seagate's forums or the 30+ pages in Apple's forums (and note: this isn't an issue exclusive to Apple systems)... or read the reviews at Newegg... this drive has MAJOR reliability issues. Don't believe all these 5 star reviews from people who reviewed the drive the day they installed it. It will run great when you first put it in. But 15-60 days in you will start hearing clunking noises. Your system will start freezing for a second or two here or there. The drive's load cycle count will start to skyrocket (to the point that even under "normal" use the drive will fail within a year by Seagate's own numbers). Some advances for the popular Western Digital Caviar Green drives, but XP users approach with caution By Snap, Crackle and Pop THE QUICK TAKE: The WD10EARS is a new (shipping 12-2009) version of Western Digital's popular and successful WDxxEADS Caviar Green series of drives. It's a very good drive, but may need more thought than usual about whether it's the right drive for you. The Caviar Green drives offer low power consumption, low noise and moderate operating temperatures, while still maintaining performace good enough for many applications, such as networked storage. This new WDxxEARS series uses more dense 500GB platters - so a 1TB drive has just two platters, and several drives up to 2TB are available. The new models have 64MB of cache. ADVANCED FORMAT: There's another change as well. WD is using this series to transition to 4KB sectors on the hard drive; they call it WD Advanced Format technology. The long-term goal is to improve the efficiency of large hard drives, but as a transitional move they still trying to accomodate the 512B sectors that Windows XP uses. So the drive emulates that, using 512B logical sectors. However, they still claim that Advanced Format provides an improvement in burst speeds. ISSUES WITH XP: While that sounds like all good news, it turns out that many XP users need to use the WD Align software to setup the drive, which can be time consuming and create some potential issues in formatting and partitioning the drive, and in finding tools to do that. The exception is if you are using a single partition for a clean install - then there is an option to set a jumper on the drive before installing. WD has a table which summarizes installation at their "Advanced Format Hard Drive Download Utility" web page - anyone buying this drive should be sure to review that page. So less technical users may want to believe WD when they say "WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7." This drive might not a good choice for some XP users - you'll be fine with the tried and true EADS series. VISTA AND WINDOWS 7: Further, cloning and partitioning tools might present issues with Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well. You can read more about the AF transition at the WD web page mentioned above in the AnandTech article, "Western Digital's Advanced Format: The 4K Sector Transition Begins." They note that as of 12-2009 there might not be any commercially available cloning and imaging tools that would work with these drives. LINUX AND MAC: The Anandtech article also states that current versions of Linux and Mac OS X are not affected by issues with Advanced Format, but discussions online suggest that Linux users seem to face some complexities on how to best partition and format to avoid mis-alignment. Nice Mainstream Upgrade By Schwartz I purchased this drive to replace the drive in my Wife's computer that was running out of space. The PC was running Windows 7 and the drive being replaced was a WD3200KS 7200RPM drive. PC the drive went into: Stock Intel Q6600, Gigabyte GA-EP45-D3SL, 8GB DDR2, and a ATI HD4870. The Windows install wasn't that old and I didn't really want to mess with getting her all her stuff back so I used a Clonezilla Live CD to clone the old drive to the new one. I then booted straight into Windows 7 off the new drive. Windows asked me to restart so I did and the system was up and running without incident. I then went into the Windows 7 disk manager and extended the partition to fill
