Have a good trip, potentially misleading claims by Mark Colan This disc has a large capacity (compared to today's standards) and is very portable. It is comfortable and well tolerated, not fast, but not slower than others in its class. I seriously doubt the claim that buying a USB 3.0 adapter for the drive is significantly accelerated, and definitely not 10x. I discussed this issue further below. [Updated 10/08/10] See below. A discussion in the comments has convinced me that the optional adapter can really make a difference for the transfer of large files like videos, but not a 10-differential. Advantages: high capacity portable hard disk by today's standards, small and not too heavy, similar to competing products USB 2.0 0 offers great compatibility (Windows, Mac, Linux drivers where available) alternatives available interfaces (eSATA, USB3, Firewire), USB port provides power so no power adapter required very standard connector on both ends of the USB cable compatible with Windows and Mac, Linux, and probably (not tested) [Updated] ability to connect directly to your TV for playback of audio and video without a computer using the new pond [see below] CONS: misrepresentation of the value of changing cables [Update: Perhaps not see updates below] is slightly larger and heavier gloss attracts WD Passport hand (such as a passport) black case is hard to find in my backpack black computer, but probably other colors will be available in the near future NEUTRAL: not fast not slow, more or less as competitive products, slower than desktop drives or more drives, 3.5 "external, but the speed of much more portable drive running at 5400 rpm. This is not as fast as most desktop hard disks (that's 7200 rpm), but 5400 rpm saves power and cooler, it may be that the 7200 RPM hard drives can not be used for an application like this without power. Large units make great records and archiving devices do not need as fast as the devices your system, applications and files you use contain. I copied my audio collection - more than 50,000 files totaling 383 GB - to this device, which is low, and (separately) to an empty 500 GB WD Passport drive that had recently made. Both units took about the same time: just over 7 hours with Windows 7 reports 16-18 MB / second. The pass was a little faster, but not enough to make a difference. REMOVABLE Interface: dubious value, misinformation [see UPDATE in this section] The accompanying "Personality Cable" make this device for use with USB 2.0. You can use the second for USB 3.0 0 and eSATA, and claim that this will speed the performance up to 10 times that I tried to be true, but I sincerely doubt this is true. You see, USB 2.0 is capable of 57 MB / sec, however, my car goes up to 16-17 MB / s, so that is occurring in only 29% of the maximum speed of USB 2.0. I think the record itself is the limiting factor. Although eSATA and USB 3.0 is faster, can not make a record of 5,400 RPM to go 10 times faster. In comparison, copying the files from my internal hard drive 7200 rpm to 10,000 rpm internal disk with SATA interface reaches the maximum in 66-70 direct MB / sec, which is about four times the speed. By analogy, the car may be capable of 100 mph, but a large number of roads will only be able to go 25 mph. Place a faster engine in the car will not help. In this analogy, the album is the way, the interface is the car. Many manufacturers have been very misleading about the speeds of the disc. They often rate the performance as that of the interface, when the device itself is significantly slower The ONLY time any drive reaches the interface speed is when the data you wanted is already in the cache - that is, you just read it or wrote it, and now you're reading it again. Because the cache is tiny compared to the disk capacity, this is an uncommon situation. In summary, I doubt the optional interfaces are worth buying.
