Either WD20EARS or WD20EADS By Ask Bjørn Hansen (See below for an update!)Original review: This product (WD20000CSRTL) is a regular WD20EADS drive in retail packaging. I was worried it'd be a different drive, but it's not.Unlike the "OEM" version (WD20EADS) it comes in a big-ish box and with an "install guide" (good if you haven't tried installing a new drive, I guess), an SATA cable and 4 mounting screws. The packaging is obviously more wasteful, but considering the bad packaging reviews the OEM drives get here, maybe its a good thing. If it's the same price as the WD20EADS then I think it's a good deal, even if just for the better packaging.*Update July 2010* As others have pointed out; they are now selling WD20EARS drives under this ASIN. I use OS X, Linux and FreeBSD so it makes no difference to me; but if you use certain really old versions of Windows (Windows XP) you won't be able to use the full capacity (easily?) or something like that. The recent drives we ordered like this came individually packaged in WD packaging, but with no cables or anything.*Update September 2010* Depending on the weather, phase of the moon etc you could now get any 2TB Western Digital "green" drive when you order this item. There are other Amazon product IDs that'll give you the same but for lower cost, too - so no longer recommended!! 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great Drive By John K. Nakata This drive with "Retail" packaging (WD20000CSRTL) and "Bulk/OEM" (WD20EADS) are the same drive. Often the retail version with the fancy packaging is more expensive but when they're the same price GET THE RETAIL VERSION.One is packaged for retail and the other sent by Western Digital to companies who use them in their products. The packaging is significantly different. The OEM drives come in small cardboard cartons protected usually by foam. This is fine when shipped in larger boxes with dozens of drives but may cause a problem when ordered individually. Of the 12 WD drives I've purchased the only one that came DOA was the OEM packaged unit. The drive had shifted from the center to the edge as a result of rough handling by the carrier.I have 12 WD bare drives acquired over the last 7 months for my MacPro . I love them. I have Western Digital drives in each of the 4 hard drive bays. For the boot drive I use the Black for maximum performance (7200RPM) while the others are Green Drives with variable speed (5400-7200RPM) for efficient power use. They run cool and are very quiet. A very small downside is they take a little extra time to "spin up".For "general" and "off-site" back ups I use the bare WD drives and NewerTech quad-interface SATA HDD dock. I store these drives in a static-proof box by Wiebetech (10-pack for $55.00), which provides protection for the exposed circuits and connectors.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE DRIVES! Only one came DOA and it was replaced by Amazon within a week. I've been buying each time there's a dip in price. Died sooner than later By Jaime Moreno I haven't even had this drive a year yet and already I've had to RMA it!It ran okay for a drive that doesn't even spin 7200rpm so it runs very quiet and cool. Not good for video intensive stuff though because one the drive starts to get full you will notice the slowdown and slight delays. As you can tell other than it running cool, quiet and capacity it has few redeeming qualities. I should've listened to others that were holding off buying 2TB or larger drives since it is new tech and hasn't been as tested as some of the smaller capacity harddrives. All I know is that I've never had a harddrive fail me so quickly before and I must not be alone because I've already been waiting over 2 weeks for Western Digital to send me a replacement drive and all I get is a delayed message so either

ioSafe Solo 1.5 TB Fireproof and Waterproof External Hard Drive with 1 Year Data Recovery Service SL1500GBUSB20 (Silver)

Like an aircraft black box for your digital data, the ioSafe Solo is the world's first, high capacity, fireproof & waterproof external hard drive. Using a simple USB 2.0 interface, the ioSafe Solo works with your PC or Mac just like any other USB external hard drive. Compatible with almost all backup programs that work with external hard drives. A combination of patented and patent pending ioSafe technologies work to allow for airflow cooling during normal operation yet protect the data from fire and floods. FloSafe vents are open during normal operation. Active cooling is provided by a near silent fan that drives air through the FloSafe vents. During a fire event, the patented FloSafe vents automatically close to prevent extreme outside heat from damaging the hard disk inside the enclosure. DataCast is our proprietary endothermic insulation that vaporizes embedded water molecules during a fire and works hard to protect the inner hard drive from damage even though the outside temperatures spike to over 1500°F. HydroSafe is our patent water protection. It consists of a heat conductive water barrier membrane that surrounds the drive. HydroSafe allows the heat created by the drive during normal operation to dissipate yet protects the drive from damage even when completely submerged in fresh water, salt water, and/or muddy water! Included with the ioSafe Solo is an unprecedented $1000 Disaster Recovery Service. This is a "no questions asked", one time use policy. Certain limitations apply.

The rugged desktop ioSafe Solo external hard drive brings disaster protection to a price range that everyone can afford. With capacities from 500GB to 1.5TB, the ioSafe Solo can safely protect precious family photo albums, music libraries and days of video memories. For business, the ioSafe Solo is a great way to protect customer databases or to secure regulated information including patient records (HIPAA, Sox, etc) or credit card information. Businesses use the Solo hard drive as a backup and storage device, no longer worrying about data loss from moving computer tapes and files offsite. Like other ioSafe products, the ioSafe Solo uses ioSafe patented technology including FloSafe air flow cooling, HydroSafe waterproof barriers and the DataCast fireproof insulation. ioSafe Fire normal operationioSafe Fire Safe Mode Fireproof Data Storage DesignThe Achilles heel for electronic devices is cooling. As electronics get faster and hard drive disks spin faster, the heat generated increases. To protect electronics from a disaster such as fire, however, you need insulation. Once insulation is placed around an electronic component, even with a very small amount of energy, the inside temperature can get incredibly hot. To solve this problem, ioSafe developed and patented several technologies. All ioSafe products are fireproof and can keep your data safe through the use of ioSafe's patented FloSafe vent technology, proprietary DataCast insulation or patent-pending MirrorGuard technology. Key to these technologies is the ability to protect your data automatically and without electrical power. Some or all of these technologies are included in ioSafe products. FloSafe - The patented FloSafe cooling vent technology provides cooling air flow through the enclosure and across the disk drives during normal operating conditions. If destructive heat levels are sensed, such as in a fire, the FloSafe vents automatically close and protect the data from the extreme heat. DataCast - The proprietary DataCast endothermic insulation technology protects data from extreme heat. . The DataCast formulation forms a chemical bond with water molecules that, at temperature above 160°F, releases water vapor to limit the internal temperature of the unit. This enables the ioSafe data storage product to protect your data from heat damage while the unit is engulfed in fire. MirrorGuard - The patent-pending MirrorGuard technology used in our ioSafe 3.5 internal hard drive line provides a reflective heat shield to deflect over 98 percent of the radiant heat from a fire, thus preventing destruction of the data stored within the device. Waterproof Data Storage Design Water protection for the ioSafe disaster-proof products consists of 2 different levels of protection: Flood Protection - Full immersion in water or saltwater Spray/Splash Protection- Water hose spray from sprinklers or the fire department ioSafe uses a patented water barrier technology call HydroSafe to protect your data. HydroSafe technology is designed to protect data loss from fresh or salt water damage, including full immersion. Simultaneously, HydroSafe technology still allows the heat dissipation required by all computer hardware during normal operation. All ioSafe products are inherently flood resistant and designed to prevent water from damaging the data. The FloSafe vents can be closed or open - it doesn't matter. Server Failure & Virus Protection Server hardware failure is an unfortunate reality that needs to be accounted for. With hard drives, it's not a question of "If" so much as "When" a hard drive will fail. Reliability continues to be improved by the major hard drive manufacturers but the reality is: a hard drive is a mechanism, all mechanisms fail eventually. ioSafe provides a simple and efficient way of backing up primary server data against server failure with the added benefit of disaster protection. The ioSafe product line helps protect against malicious viruses by providing a redundant storage location for your primary hard drive. ioSafe highly recommends that you install any major brand of virus protection software (Norton, McAfee, etc.) as your first line of virus protection. If a virus does compromise your primary data, the ioSafe provides an onsite disk based copy for simple and fast restore. This means no digging through tapes or trickling data back from an online storage location. If your primary server fails, simply restore the backup from an ioSafe unit per the software manufacturer's recommendations. This technique can reduce downtime to minutes rather than days or weeks. There are many different choices of backup software that are compatible with ioSafe products. Virtually any software that supports disk based backup will work. Contact ioSafe directly to learn more how our unique product line can help protect your data. Working perfectly, super quiet operation, top-notch customer service By Suzie Mcleod I'll try not to just repeat what all the other reviewers have said. I do recall reading several reviews prior to purchasing which mentioned noisy operation, so I wanted to add my two cents' worth in that regard. I've had mine for about 2 weeks now, running constantly. I'm using Mac 10.5.8 (Leopard). It connected immediately, went through very quick and easy steps to format correctly for Mac/Time Machine and it was up and running in less than 2 minutes. My drive sits on a granite surface and it is absolutely silent. After installation and during the online warranty registration, I called ioSafe to ask a question about upping the disaster recovery and warranty to five years, and I've never had a company rep who was more easily accessible or more courteous. He thanked me several times for purchasing the drive, asked what operating system I was using, just general chit-chat for a couple minutes regarding the drive. I mentioned that the WSJ video was impressive, and he said the guy who did that was sitting right next to him. That started another line of conversation for a couple minutes. It was quite a refreshing change of pace to be able to speak with a live person by inputting just an extension number which was given in information that came with the drive than the norm these days of press this to do this, then that do do that, and so on, ad nauseum. One additional thing I'd point out is that the drive is not nearly as big as I thought it was going to be, although it does weigh quite a bit so the weight listed is probably in the neighborhood. The Amazon.com product dimensions are incorrect. Their dimensions led me to believe it would be almost the size of a PC CPU, so I was pleasantly surprised. I've found that at least half the time I can't trust the dimensions and/or weight of products that Amazon gives. This is a great hard drive, and I would highly recommend it. I don't have any negative comments whatsoever to impart thus far. The test will be in how it holds up over time, but I believe it to be a very well-made drive that I can feel comfortable in putting my family's photographs and videos on for archival storage. Of course, common sense dictates redundancy in archiving important data, but this drive is working wonderfully with Time Machine.UPDATE 04/04/2011 - Still extremely satisfied with this purchase. I upgraded my Mac to a new 27" version on 01/01/2011 and this HD restored everything beautifully and perfectly from Time Machine. I subsequently had problems with my new Mac and had to have the HD replaced; thereafter, the IOSafe restored my backup perfectly a second and third time. I continue to highly recommend this drive without reservation. IN MY CASE, IT MAKES NO NOISE WHATSOEVER. This must vary, though, as there are other reviewers who mention a noise. 59 of 66 people found the following review helpful. My Digital Safe By Cyber-z I bought the 1 TB IoSafe because I wanted a good detachable hard drive that would last. I think it is worth the cost for what you get. The fact that they advertise it to be able to withstand fires, floods and theft seemed like a bit much to me at first, but now it feels more like my personal safe rather than just another computer component: I have downloaded and scanned all of my music and photos; albums, cassettes & CD's along with my important legal documents, tax statements, bank records etc. I placed these items into various partitions that I created. I like it so much I am thinking about purchasing another IoSafe for my DVD collection! My only real complaint would be that it is kind of noisy when it is working. Also, the blue lights in front are pleasing but, the on/off switch is in the back and would be a pain in the neck to turn off and on if you placed it on the floor; which is exactly where something this heavy normally

Fast & Quiet By Chawks This review applies to model WD3200BJKT not Model: WD3200BEKT which does not have the free fall sensor----I purchased this drive to replace the 100gb, 7200 rpm Hitachi that came with my Dell Inspiron 9400. So far the drive has been equally as quiet, a little bit faster and of course much larger. I have noticed none of the vibration that a another reviewer noted. I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro on this hard drive at least five times in order to give the drive a good test copying and modifying files. So far this drive has passed every test with flying colors.Pros:Size - 320gb = lots of storage space.Warranty - 5 year warranty (unheard of in a laptop hard drive)WD's ShockGuard(tm) technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks during shipping and handling and in daily operation.WD's SecurePark parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear and improved shock tolerance.Free-fall sensor - As an added layer of protection, if the drive (or the system it's in) is dropped while in use, WD's free-fall sensor detects that the drive is falling and, in less than 200 milliseconds, parks the head to help prevent damage and data loss.16 MB cache-----In short, I am very impressed with this drive! 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Fast & Efficient Drive By CRAIG C BAILEY I was a bit skeptical about this drive after a lot of people were stating that it wasn't that much faster than the 250GB Seagate Momentus 5400.4. WD 320GB 2.5 HDD with free-fall sensor WD3200BJKT By dash-o This WD Scorpio Black WD3200BJKT hard disk has been working great for several months now. I installed it in a Macally B-S250SU Hi-Speed eSATA/USB2.0 Storage Enclosure for 2.5inch SATA HDD to host several development virtual machines (VMs) containing application server and IDE. Being so small, and particularly in this very small enclosure, the free-fall sensor provides assurance in preventing damage to the disk in case of a bump or if moving it out of the way while running or accessing the disk. This kit runs of a single USB port without a single problem given the low voltage use of this disk during ramp-up. I would definitely recommend and purchase again. See all 77 customer reviews...

Very well built external enclosure with great flexibility By BrianLy The TowerRAID arrived in a pretty big box so I was expecting something a lot bulkier than most enclosures. It turned out to be sleeker than I had expected but has a pretty heavy build quality. The case is along the lines of a Mini PC case. Installation of the drives was simple and unspectacular but the bulky cover was a little difficult to get back on. Once powered on I found the fan to be very quiet compared to other single drive enclosures I have. There is a bright blue LED at the back which I found to be annoying. It is probably only a matter of opening the case and disconnecting, but I haven't gotten around to this yet. I chose to install the supplied PCI-Express card rather than use my existing eSATA connection. I understand that this enables some sort of daisy chain configuration of these enclosures in the future.Installation of the drivers and configuration software under Vista x64 was successful but I did find a subsequent update on Windows Update which I promptly installed. The configuration utility is written in an older version of Java which forces desktop composition to be turned off when it is running. So expect some screen flicker as a result of this. In disk manager all drives installed present themselves individually until you turn them into a RAID set using the utility. This enables some interesting uses. I have 2 drives configured as a mirrored array for backup purposes, with another standalone drive for scratch/temp/junk space.Since my initial installation, I rebuilt my machine from scratch with Windows 7 x64. I disconnected the array before installation and reconnected it after Windows 7 was installed. It installed a driver from Windows update for the supplied PCI-X card and I was up and running. Since the RAID etc was configured I did not need to install any of the management software.I would recommend this product to technical professionals and advanced users. It is not what I would consider a consumer product but it will work in that situation of setup properly for the end user. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Excellent product! Decided to go with the Sans Digital device. The TR4M is bigger and hence has more ventilation as compared to the ICYDOCK product. Drive temperatures are being reported as a whopping 15 deg C lower than the ICYDOCK product.I also like the plethora of LED's in the front to show the status of the drives and the TR4M. Using it with my HP Mediasmart Windows Home Server and couldn't be happier! One thing is that I wish it came with Drive sleds, and that it didn't use a cheesy blue LED rear exhaust fan. But other than that it's a stellar product!Highly recommended product. 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. low cost, fast, mass storage By D. D. Reuter I have 6 of these units running on Vista32Pro and Win7Pro-64 PCs. Units have 4 matching WD 1TB Green drives or WD 2TB Green drives installed using striped RAID (single logical drive per box). All units run cool and quiet -- quiet enough to sit right next to the units and work all day without annoying fan/drive noise. Multi TB data transfers between units on the same PC average between 80-90 MBps (smaller transfers peak at 120 MBps due to RAM cache). TB data transfers across a 1 Gbps network average 58-65 MBps depending on network traffic. RAID 5 (redundancy within one box) slows writing speeds to 25-30 MBps. If speed matters and redundancy is essential (as it should be), best to use simple striped RAID with matching drives, get redundancy by using multiple boxes and use folder syncing software -- I use AllWay Sync (works like

The next time I tried to use it (shortly after the 30-day Amazon return period had expired) I found that the eSATA interface was no longer functional. In addition it made Windows 7 unable to shut down and I had to do a restore in order to get Windows working again.UPDATE: I have since discovered that the problem was not with the docking station, but with the SATA drivers on my computer. To get the eSATA interface on this device to work with my computer, I had to change the SATA mode in my computer's BIOS from ATA to AHCI. Before changing the BIOS settings however, I had to make changes to the Windows registry which are shown in Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB922976. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Work good on both eSATA and USB By C.K I was puzzled like many other reviewers that its eSATA & USB Hub/CardReader do not work together. Then I stumbled upon a solution by chance and thought I should share.1) Plug in the eSATA cable and wait for the hard drive to be recognized.2) THEN....plug in the USB cable and all the USB functions like the Hub and Card Reader will work just fine. I had no problem reading flash cards and connecting additional peripherals to the hub.Eagle does not mention this in the user manual but I can confirm that all functions work at once. You simply have to plug eSATA first, then USB.Oh, and don't forget to plug in the AC power adapter (required to power the hard drive when you use eSATA). 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not bad but beware of finicky hard drives By J. Davis I picked one of these up for work. It's working well in eSATA mode (please see the review about setting AHCI mode if you have trouble), but I noticed something peculiar. One of my hard drives does not like to stand straight up like you see in the picture. It would spin up, be detectable in the BIOS, but after a couple minutes, the device would vanish and the hard drive would power down after making some interesting seeking noises. To solve this, I had to tip the entire docking station on its side. Now it works perfectly. The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB.Hope this helps someone! One other thing to note it's quite bulky and doesn't look all that great. It also does not use the latest USB 3.0 standard, but will work fine in a USB 3.0 port at USB 2.0 speeds. See all 9 customer reviews...

Jones I owned the original Drobo when it first came out, but ended up selling it due mainly to how noisy it was. The ease of use of the Drobo kept me interested in the products however. I'm happy to say, this is drobo is much improved. It's not silent by any means, and is probably louder than it has to be, but it replaced the blower with a regular fan and is much more tolerable. It takes a LONG time to boot after a shutdown (around 10 minutes)Transfer speeds are not really anything to write home about. I'm getting between 24-27 MB/sec uploading large media files. That will be fine for my uses, but if you're doing a lot of data manipulation on this as your primary storage, you may be disappointed. 76 of 84 people found the following review helpful. Drobo FS - A hard drive for the whole family By L. Abate Intro:External hard drives are cheap. For less than $100 you can purchase a 1 terabyte external USB drive. After a few minutes of setup time, you can be well on your way to storing your MP3's, Office docs, and family photos. But what happens if it fails? What happens when it gets full? And how do you share your files with the rest of your family members? These are the problems that led a company called Data Robotics to create a product known as the Drobo.Think of the Drobo like a little storage robot. You just add a few hard drives, plug it in, and the Drobo does the rest. The latest in the line of these "storage robots" is called the Drobo FS. The FS stands for file sharing. Instead of a USB connection, it plugs directly into your router. It's like a centralized hard drive for everyone in your house to use. It works over both wired and wireless connections, has native Apple Time Machine support, and expands up to 7 terabytes - yes, 7 terabytes. Whether you have a PC, a Mac, or one of each, the Drobo FS works with them all. And the best part about this little guy - it is no more difficult to set up than a printer.Setting up the Drobo FS:You can purchase the Drobo FS in one of two ways, with or without disks. Either way, the FS ships in its own creative packaging. Inside the box you will find the Drobo FS, a power adapter, ethernet cable and installation software - that is it. On the front of the FS you will find a reflective plastic cover, held in place by magnets. Behind it, you will find the five hard drive slots. You can insert as few as two or as many as five drives - it doesn't matter what size. Have two 500GB drives and one 2TB drive? Not a problem, the Drobo FS simply adds all available space to the "storage pool." For my review, I used three 1TB drives and two 1.5TB drives. After inserting the drives and connecting the ethernet cable to the router, I installed the Drobo software on a MacBook Pro. After the software installation was complete, a quick reboot was needed and the Drobo FS was ready to be powered on. The first time it powers up, a type of diagnostic sequence is initiated, most likely to check the health and sizes of the newly inserted disks. After about one minute of blinking lights, the Drobo FS showed up in my list of shared drives. In roughly 10 minutes I had successfully added over 4TB of protected hard drive space to my network. In Action:The Drobo FS will first show up on your network as a single public share. A share can be thought of as a partition or separate "disk." You can choose to leave it as a public share, but most users will likely go on to create more, i.e. Music, Movies, Photos, Work - you get the point. Shares can also be created for different users, but I will get more into that later on.File transfer speeds were not outstanding, but would be more than sufficient for normal use. Hard drive intensive activities, such as video editing should still be done on a direct-attach hard drive. Speed is not what the FS is about - it's sharing. Within 5 minutes I was able to copy files

Nice, new model By JE I've had the previous version of the Toshiba portable hard drives, and this model makes nice improvements. The case is smaller with textured rubber all along the edges. Also, this drives gets recognized faster than the previous Toshiba models, and data transfer seems faster, though I haven't done any concrete tests. The colors are more appealing to me. The only thing I don't like, which others may or may not agree with, is that the LED light indicating power and activity is much, much brighter than the previous model. The previous model was a small, dimly lit dot, and this model has a larger rectangular LED that's annoying. I won't detract any stars from that because it's very fixable with a small bit of electrical tape. Overall, this is a very good purchase. 246 of 274 people found the following review helpful. Least Expensive Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade (External or Internal): But Needs Reformatting for Mac By SanjeevP As of June 2010, this Toshiba is the best value for money amongst 1 Tb portable hard drives. The competition includes Western Digital My Passport SE for Mac 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBABW0010BSL-NESN (Silver) and Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA1000100 (Black) both of which are more expensive than Toshiba Canvio. Out of the box, it comes as NTFS formatted drive and works only on Windows computers. It even comes with Windows backup software, which I have not used. For just Mac use, you have to reformat the hard drive as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive Journaled). Once reformatted, it works flawlessly as an external drive or Time Machine. Here is the formatting summary: FOR WINDOWS ONLY USE - format as NTFS - the format it comes in. FOR BOTH WINDOWS & MAC USE -format it as MS DOS (FAT 32) but then it does not work as a Time Machine. TO USE AS MAC ONLY & TIME MACHINE - format as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) - which does not work in Windows. TO USE FOR MAC TIME MACHINE & WINDOWS - partition the drive using Disk Utility and format one partition as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) and other partition as NTFS (Windows 7) or FAT 32 (Windows XP) The drive is big enough that you can partition it and format it anyway and have it all. It is small, sleek, light, quiet and as of June 2010 the biggest capacity portable USB drive. Over the years I have used numerous portable hard drives, most of them Western Digital & Lacie, and they all worked well; only one Fantom hard drive died. This is my first Toshiba hard drive and I have not used this Toshiba Canvio long enough to comment on its longevity but it seems to be functioning well and as of now it is the best value for money. UPDATE (August 18, 2010): As of now, this is the only 1 Tb 2.5 inch drive available out there and it can be taken out of the enclosure to replace the drive in unibody aluminum Macbook Pros. Phillips 00 screwdriver, T6 TORX screwdriver and a sharp knife (or long nails) are the tools you need. All the steps can be discovered by searching h Google or YouTube for "open Canvio" and "clone Mac hard drive". I followed the instructions and video from owmacsales under sparedrive on their web site and did fresh mac OS install. Macinstruct webs site has detailed descriptions of hard drive cloning and YouTube, several videos uploaded by generous folks. MacBook Pro hard drive is slightly thinner than this Canvio, but it fits snugly and the battery cover can be closed. This is the cheapest way to upgrade MacBook Pro (or notebook) hard drive! Inside MacBook Pro, I partitioned this drive: one for Mac OS, one for Bootcamp Windows 7 and third as FAT32 where both can read and write. Canvio is a 5400 RPM drive and I am not sure 7200 RPM, 1 Tb is even available in 2.5 inch drives as of now. The only other internal 2.5 inch 1 Tb drive available as of now, Western Digital 1 TB Scorpio Blue

Brown I bought this unit because it did hardware RAID5, had USB3, eSata, supported 4 drives, and was little. It accomplished every single one of those goals very nicely, but it's not perfect. I'll get to that in a second. I bought this unit to use as a backup volume for my machine. I had 2 1.5TB drives laying around, so I bought a 3rd to make a RAID5 Volume. Setup was very easy - after mounting the pull fixtures to the drives, I slid them in, turned in on. I then held in the RAID button until it flashed, touched it again until it was on RAID5, then pressed the RAID confirmation button on the back, which is hidden behind a removable panel. I then hooked the drive up to the esata port, partitioned in, and formatted it. Pros: * Size. This is about 8" wide, 10" tall, and a 10" long. It's compact and easy to carry around. * USB3 is fast - I haven't actually used USB3, but it is backwards compatible with USB2 * eSata is also fast. This is how I have it hooked up, and it works nicely in Ubuntu Linux without a hitch. Many people will tell you this unit needs a SATA card that supports port replication in order to function. I'm here to tell you they are wrong. Because of the hardware RAID support, the OS sees all the drives as a single volume, so no port replication is necessary. This is an epic win. * Hot swap. If one of the drives die, just pull it out and replace it. * Cooling. The fan on the back is a good nice, and the auto fan adjustment means that the drives shouldn't overheat. * Cost. This is way cheaper than a ReadyNAS or a Drobo, but that is because some of the cons. Cons: * The power cord connection is on the side. Having it in the back would be really nice. * There is no way to dynamically resize a volume. I have 3 drives in there now. If I want to add a forth drive, I need to recreate the RAID, losing all my data. This is a unit used for backup, so it's not the end of the world, but it would be nice. * The pictures on Amazon aren't quite right. There are no dip switches anymore - the unit automatically configures itself when you setup the RAID. * There is no way to get status on an individual drive, other than the lights on the front. If the unit is running degraded, there is no way to notify the OS, to notify me. This unit is in my basement, so I don't look at the lights very often. * Speaking of lights, they are very, very bright. Not an issue for me, since it's in my basement, but if you plan on using this for a home theater application, it could be. Overall, I am quite pleased with this unit. Being able to have a RAID5 enclosure whilst only using a single eSata port, and not needing a port replicator compatible card is a big win. The biggest issue is really trying to figure out what file system to put on it. I am definitely recommending this to my friends. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Good, but some bad issues. By uvr In the first days using this device (HFR2-SU3S2) I discovered several issues and perform some tests. First of all, I full the device with: 4 x Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS. I configured the HFR2-SU3S2 in RAID 5. ISSUES ====== 1. Transfer rate is not about 500 MB/s as many people could expect. Average transfer rate is 55 MB/s with rare maximum peaks of 120 MB/s (less than 2 MB/s was the lowest peak). 2. The sleeping mode does not work if connected through USB 3.0, only connected through USB 2.0. I did not test through eSATA. 3. The worst (for me) is that eventhough it says in the box that is compatible with Win7, it is not 100% true. HFR2-SU3S2 is not compatible (at least) with Win7 Check Disk Utility (CDU). When I run the CDU against HFR2-SU3S2 the utility does not do anything. PROBLEM: I disconected by mistake the HFR2-SU3S2 without use the Safely Remove Hardware Utility and after that, every

Nicely bundled system -- almost superb By sodakar As a consumer, I like to see products that have 5 stars, so it pains me to give this product a 4-star review, but almost superb just isn't 5 stars. The chassis construction is good, and the SATA card, docs, and drivers are all good, too. The benchmark results from 4 x Seagate LP 2TB's gives me 127MB sequential read, and 95MB sequential writes, so that's certainly acceptable for a budget-minded external box running green SATA drives. (see attached image) As far as power consumption, using a kill-a-watt, I measured: - 45-50W peak/momentary - 35-40W nominal - 20-25W idle - 10-15W host system powered down I have no complaints with the power draw while the chassis is in use, but I'm sorry, I'm going to have to take 0.5 star away for the 10-15W of power when the host system is powered down. Sure, it's only 10-15W (~$1/month, depending on your local utilities), but why have the fan on and sucking power when the the host system is down and the inside of the chassis is 60F? (as measured by an IR thermometer) It loses another 0.5 star for the drive installation method. Yes, it's tool-less, in that the drives just slide in, but it's not screw-less, because you have to open the side of the chassis and screw on some giant screws similar to what you would see holding down the side cover of a PC. I would've paid a bit more for a simple lock-down mechanism, since this makes it so I need a good amount of clearance on the sides of the chassis when I add a drive. All that being said, I would certainly consider recommending this to a friend in need of a 4-bay eSATA chassis. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ok Personal Solution, Bad Business Solution By A Rawlins This device seems like it might work well enough if I wasn't sharing it as a mappable drive on the network. However, I have had problems with my Backup Software freezing my machine because this device would not respond quickly enough. That was before I even shared the device across the network. When on the network, if I am accessing this device hard locally, then it drops from the rest of the network. I have this connected to a Win 7 64 bit i7 3.07 ghz with 12GB Ram. I have installed 4 hard drives each at 3 TB for a total RAID 5 of around 9 TB. If you want a lot of storage in a RAID 5 and will not touch it much, then this might work great for your needs. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Works as designed. By M. D. Roach Didn't have any trouble getting this set up. Installed the card with one Enclosure then Created a Raid 5 with 4 2TB WD 5400 64 Drives without any issues. Windows format took several hour to complete. However in the end ended up with 6TB of storage. Achieved speeds up to 100MB/s writes copying data from single 1.5TB drive to this unit. Western Digital Caviar GreenPower 1TB SATA Hard Drive - 16MB WD10000CSRTL

As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

You're upset because this "Intellipower" concept allows hard drive speeds as low as 5400 rpm, but can be as high as 7200 rpm. So which is it- high performing drive or budget friendly consumer class model? It's both. This new variable spin speed system is absolutely transparent in operation. You don't notice lag, you don't hear odd sounds; quite the opposite, this drive is whisper quiet. It's a fast drive, has boatloads of space, and is priced pretty reasonably to boot. If you are looking for all out insane speed, get a Raptor-X or a 15K RPM SCSI setup. If you want a drive that will boot fast, hold your whole iTunes library and maybe even help Mother Nature a little bit, here's your answer. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Inaudible, Super fast, and *Plenty* of Space By P. McGuire My 320 GB WD Caviar was getting too full I did some searching around for a 1TB drive (as a secondary drive to my computer). Slashdot just happened to have an article on this drive the day I was looking to buy one. I was a little skeptical about the 5400 RPM but I was looking for a data drive not a OS drive. Well, this drive is nice... It is as fast as my 320GB 7200rpm drives (just doing MP3 transfers). It only took like 10 seconds to do a Quick Format - as with all drives you won't get the full 1TB due to formatting but everyone knows that. The drive is inaudible... I can't hear a THING - especially when using it. My old 320GB Western Digital Caviar clicked and clacked like the old 1GB drives ... So it is nice not having to listen to that anymore. Being "green" is kinda cool too. Nothing like helping everyone out a little by buying something that uses less electricity. I definitely recommend this drive. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Solid performer, and its green. By T. W. Blackburn I bought three of these drives to fill out an HP EX470 home server. They have proven to be reliable, cool running, and quiet performers in their 24/7 environment. And on top of it all, they use less power. Excellent drives See all 27 customer reviews...

By Master Chief I purchased this item, since I thought this was one of the best-looking dual HDD docking station. After an easy installation, I set it up for my Mac Mini. The item included everything you would need for installation. While running with Mac, the installed HDDs did not enter to the "spin-down" mode, and both HDDs were overheated. (I specifically checked the option "spin-down when not used" on from Preferences of OS X.) This morning I was really surprised to find that both HDDs were still too hot to touch, even though I turned off the Mac Mini before I went to bed. I usually leave the power of docking stations on, since they enter to auto "power-down" mode. But this one didn't, unfortunately. USB and eSATA worked fine, but who knows how long it will take to ruin my new 1TB HDDs and I decided to return it for something else. If you want a dual docking station which looks good on your desk, maybe you will like this one. For others, if you do not need a "USB hand warmer" on your desk, docking stations which provide auto spin-down after powering off are always recommended. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. works ok, esata needs port multiplier support By mike892 I tried this on my mac pro, wiring up esata to the hidden sata connector hidden away on the motherboard. I guess the mac pro doesn't have the required PM (port multiplier) support, because only one drive is recognized through the esata connector. So to get both drives, you have to use USB, which is slower. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very badly made. By lega First bought one of these because the reviews seemed alright. Bad Sectors...bad deal By Jonathan Beaver I received this item quickly and it installed easily and with a little configuration help my computer read it right away, no problems. The drive doesn't come with a SATA cord, so you will need to purchase one. The other thing I didn't realize is that I had no hard drive sled so that the drive would fit into the slot on my computer. This was another $10 and I ended up ordering it separately through EBAY. The main problem with this drive is that it has a number of bad sectors in it that are causing problems when I use Norton Ghost. I haven't been able to back up my other drive onto this one. There is probably an easy solution, but I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. A new drive shouldn't have this problem. This is further encouragement to switch to MAC when this computer finally gives up. See all 4 customer reviews...

UPDATE 1/3/12 - from three stars to one star By The Rarely Reviewer Generally I am a fan of clickfree backup devices ..... although if you let them they will back up a bunch of stuff you don't really care about. However, do not expect to use THIS ONE through a hub; it essentially demands a native, dedicated 3.0 usb port - since purchase I've called clickfree and they confirmed it won't work reliably otherwise - and if you don't have one don't buy this unless (1) you are planning way ahead and (2) don't mind using this with a 2.0 port (or hub) in the interim. So far most computers with 3.0 usb functionality have only one such port; two at the most. So, I've ended up using this 3.0 device on a 2.0 hub which annoys me intensely since I already have 3 clickfree 2.0 devices that will function through a hub. (If you really care about your data you don't depend on having only ONE current backup, RIGHT ???) Also, even with usb 3.0 count on starting the backup and going away (but not RIGHT away, after a few minutes the software will prompt you for a permission and STAY THERE until you agree)for at least overnight and possibly longer, depending on how much you have to backup. But after that, even on usb 2.0, most routine backups don't take long. See all 2 customer reviews...

Disk good, packing bad (no, make that bad/bad) By 11bravo There IS a reason to buy RETAIL disks, not OEM disks, from Amazon, and that is the shipment's packing. Received this disk in a "standard" box (those just fine for BOOKS), with some brown paper wadded in along the SIDES of the disk's own box. No bubble wrap, no plastic air bubbles, just some paper that did NOT prevent the Western Digital box from moving around, as I noticed when I picked up the box from the porch. Come on, Amazon, these are NOT books, dvd's, or hand tools... At least you could put enough packing in so the object does not move, let alone putting packing in above and below to REALLY cushion the hardware. I'll note that the Amazon box was crushed in on 1 end a good inch, no doubt from having something dropped on it. UPS is not exactly known for its gentle handling of packages... Amazon should be aware of that and act accordingly. If this had been an OEM disk, I would have returned it immediately, not even bothering to format. With the retail version, I'll format and run a chkdsk. But in continues to amaze me why Amazon so carelessly ships computer hardware with such poor packing. Makes me want to look ELSEWHERE for computer products. Evening's UPDATE: Call the coroner - this drive is DOA. Plugged it in, powered it up, can hear it come up to speed, then click click - it's the head's death rattle; Window's disk manager waiting in vain for a disk that will never appear. Shame. UPS/Amazon has murdered another one... The only "good" news is, I won't have to wait for chkdsk's run... Note: this is the RETAIL version - i.e., comes in its own box, not an OEM (static bag only). If Amazon's packaging can't protect a retail box, think how an OEM would suffer... 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. 5-yr warranty yes. By Omni Presence WD Caviar Black 1TB 32mb cache retail. Nice. This is apparently THE best drive right now considering the claimed performance and reliability. Price is very good at $99. Get retail box instead of the OEM Bulk drive. Retail has better packing, better binning selection from the factory, and overall your best chance of receiving a reliable drive that performs the way it's supposed to and will receive full warranty. (WD warranties the OEM bulk drive purchase 5yrs as long as it is shipped correctly, and there's the rub). Install is easy. Plug and play. Drive gets WARM so place it with some airflow. I have a well-ventilated case and the drive is reading 34C (93F) at idle. That's 10 degrees warmer than I'm used to with my old 160gb Caviar. The papers in the box claim 5yr warranty. WD website concurs. I don't think you need to register to get warranty service, just need your receipt. I have had no trouble from WD when I had to return a drive (did three last year) and I have never registered. AMAZON SHIPPING IS STILL AN ISSUE. Retail 1TB Black arrived with the retail box intact but loose in the shipping box, with some packing material tossed in randomly. The drive is suspended in the retail container, so that the retail box protects to drive from direct impacts but I still wouldn't want to drop or toss the box around. Unfortunately that is exactly what happens during shipping and Amazon is inconsistent about padding that box. But I'm happy to say that the drive tested fine with Western Digital Lifeguard Diagnostics - Extended Test. BTW same goes for the OEM one I got in comparison (miraculous considering the shipping for that one!). I did large file transfers between two of these on a fresh Windows & 64-bit install, P45/ICH10R motherboard (gigabyte ud3p) and throughput was 80MB/s - 114MB/s. I haven't run any performance Diagnostics, just looked at the Resource Monitor once in a while. So, decent performance. I'm going to run hw2bench and see what I get. It's a bit noisy with two of these in my quiet PC case, but not a bad sound, just purring every second

By Kelly Owens this drive is amazing! ive got 1 in my tivo Premiem HD and wow is it fast and good! also have 2 in the Security Camera dvr setup again its not missed a beat!BUT i must warn you now DO NOT USE THIS IN A COMPUTER YOU WILL STORE DATA ON IE DOCUMENTS ETC!!!!! THE REASON FOR THIS IS BELOWThe A/V drives ignore errors, the normal drives will do an error recovery to attempt to get back any data from the platter. When recording video (security cameras etc) you want an A/V drive that will just record whatever you throw at it, and keep going even if it misses a byte or two. An error in a couple of bytes just causes a minor blip in the video stream, but the rest won't stop. On a normal drive it could go into an error recovery mode and stop recording for 10-30 seconds - and this is much worse for security. However if you store documents, a single byte error could corrupt megabytes or even gigabytes of important data.Which you choose depends on your purpose.. but for DVR's, CCTV's Etc ie if its only going to have video on it then this is the kiddie you need! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. By Mac on Steroids I've done a lot of research in purchasing an external drive for my iMac and this drive came as my #1 choice. First of all I would like to address all the other reviewers saying they have problems with this product - please note that YOU MUST UPGRADE product's firmware software before you can use it with Leopard (a small download from WD web site and software installation)! In my product packaging I've had a written notice on this from WD and this was the first thing I did! This is the only con I have for this product, however once your firmware is updated, the drive works like a charm!!! WD made this model specifically for Macs, the drive is even HFS+ (Apple) formatted. I've also seen this drive being sold in Apple retail stores! I've had this drive for the last couple of months and I've never had problems with it, I love it! The product is very much aesthetically pleasing, its operation is dead quiet and I love the automated power save feature (drive powers off automatically when not in use)! The drive features quadruple interface (USB, ESATA, FW400, FW800) - I use firewire 800 and the data transfer is blazing fast!! In my research the runner up was LaCie Big Disk Extreme 1 TB having similar features as this WD drive, however besides a small difference in price, the major difference was that WD extends 5 year warranty for its WD drive, whereas LaCie gives you only 3 years warranty! I would highly recommend Western Digital My Book Studio 1TB hard drive, Mac (WDH1Q10000N) to all Mac users, you cannot go wrong with this one! :) 96 of 111 people found the following review helpful. I really WANT to like this drive, but... By Sam Sheddan Like it says in the review title, I really WANT to like this drive. Unfortunately, I can't. I don't. And I probably won't. Ever. Why? I bought a 1Tb drive for media storage, and the 500Gb model for Time Machine. The drives mounted fine on my 24" aluminum iMac, but then the problems started. The drives would sometimes freeze when they went into suspend mode. Worse, OS X is too stupid to stop trying to access a "dead" drive, so the frozen drive would hang the system. I figured it was a fluke, so I did a hard restart on all my hardware. Same problems, so I changed cables. No luck. I even tried the firewire 400 and USB interfaces. The drives would still freeze, and still hang the system. I figured I just had a defective drive. No problem. I already had another 500Gb drive on order, so I sent the first back to the vendor and waited for the second to arrive. I had the same problems with the second drive, so it went back for a refund as well. The 1Tb drive started giving me the same problems, so I took the mechanism out of the WD case and put it in an OWC enclosure. Not surprisingly, I haven't had a problem since. So, why do I want to like this drive? Pros: - It's attractive - It's quiet (because it's fanless) - Quadruple interface (nice!) Cons: - It just doesn't work... WD is my first choice for internal drives, but they have some MAJOR problems with the My Book Studio line. Since other Mac users love them, I suspect that the drives simply don't like the new iMacs. Check the Apple Discussion Forums and you'll find lots of problems with them. 35 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Exceeded expectations By Mac & PC Techie I had read reviews of previous versions of the WD MyBook series drives being excessively loud. This 1TB (931GB actually) drive is very quiet, just a slight hum to it. I have an iMac with a 1TB drive and I am using this WD external for Time Machine under Leopard with FireWire 800. I have had it about a month and am very pleased so far. The front has a light bar that strobes or flashes depending on what the drive is doing.
