Works out of the box By Joshua Hattersley This is a great addition for anyone looking to add more SATA devices to their computer. I personally needed more ports to accommodate more hard drives in my newly-installed SATA backplane, and didn't want to use port multiplier technology due to concerns over bandwidth constraints. This card is PCIe 1x and works like a charm; I'm running under Ubuntu 9.04, and literally didn't need to perform any setup beyond installing the card and plugging in my drives. The featured SIL3124 chipset is widely supported, which is one of the reasons I went for this model.Good price, great value--why get a card with anything less than four ports if you're going to install one anyway?--and works like a charm. Highly recommended. Note that the card also supports RAID functionality, but I'm not using it as I've already got a software RAID running via mdadm under Linux. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. works fine, a bit expensive By Sam First of all, this is not a real (HW) raid card, raid functions are implemented in the driver. For me that is OK, I did not need it for that. I am using this card under Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) for a software raid array with the Linux kernel software raid (mda), NOT using the drivers by Silicon Image. I actually flashed the non-raid bios available from Silicon Image's site and you should too unless you want to use their raid drivers.Building the same array (same drives, same kernel, same everything) using the SATA ports on the motherboard (FoxConn 785G) resulted in constant failures of the array. Switching to a Gigabyte MB made things better, but still not perfect. With this card I have zero failures for weeks. So as a 4 ports PCIe SATA card, it works like a charm with recent Linux kernels.The biggest negative is that it is way too expensive for what it is good for. It should sell around $30 like the PCI (non PCIe) cards from the same manufacturer with the same chipset do. RAID **BEWARE** By Michael Cole I swear by Sil cards as they have worked flawlessly for me in the past (have 6 running in older machines). This one came with a BIOS from 2006 - and it failed to boot my existing OS. Standard procedure is as follows: 1. install the card. 2. Boot the machine. 3. install the driver. 4. reboot the machine. 5. shut down machine, move the SATA cable to the RAID card (ID0 is the second connector from the face - 1 | 0 | 2 | 3). 6. Turn on the machine. The card is suppose to work even if the motherboard BIOS fails to recognize it, however, all I kept getting was failure. Flashed the bios to the latest 2010 version. TR5M-B ESATA Storage By Robert Mcgeorge I was searching for a fast and efficient way to manage large volumes of files and this seemed to be pretty much what I needed. I have tested the Thermal take Dual Esata/USB Hard Drive array and they did not say anything about needing a HBA card that is explicitly for multiporting. Works in JBOD or RAID with USB. Only reads one hard drive in ESATA if you do not have a multiport HBA (Host Bus Adapter) Card. All computers right now do not come with a multiport Esata HBA installed even the ones with two ESATA Ports. I have tried the Linksys Dual Network Attached Storage NAS-200 and found it to be very slow at data transfers but very reliable when you have it like you want it. The good thing about the TR5M-B setup is that it comes with the multiport card. Use it! It works! I tried first setting up the unit without the included software. All JBOD.Findings Pro: It found my two hard drives (Seagate 1.5Tb and 500 GB)that I installed with data already on the hard drive. I was able to access the data.Findings Con: The transfer rates in this setup (Straight Pass Through-No manufacturer software installed) were pretty slow. 30 to 60 Megabytes per second.With manufacturer software installed:Findings Pro: I took the data on the two hard drives and backed it all up. Then I installed the manufacturer software and configured for JBOD again with that same software. The transfer rates were 100 to 200 Megabytes per second. This is the same speed as transferring between two internal hard drives on your computer. Use the Software!Findings Con: Transferring Between the TR5M-B Hard Disk #1 and TR5M-B Hard Disk #2 were pretty slow, about 30 Megabytes per second. This is due to it having to go through the same multiport HBA card for data transferring. Dean I needed an array so I could hang it off a windows home server and store all my dvd's. This one little unit replaced two large 200 disc DVD changers I used to hang off my media center computer, under my TV. I only threw 6 TB of disks on it for the time being, but it works to hold all my digital media - saved TV captures, AVI files, MP3's, photos, files, backups, and about 650 movies now.Setup was a snap, discs are easy to get in and out, and since it's in my basement, even if the unit had been noisy it wouldn't have bothered me, but it's not.Great way to get some disk storage for your digital content. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great for archiving backups By Prodigal Knot These are terrific little disk enclosures. They are a little noisy for desktop use, but I use them as archival backups of data on my SAN. The price of large capacity disks is so reasonable now, there is no excuse to use tape anymore.I have a total of 6 2TB units that I keep my working backups on. Since I need to have a fail-over that will work quickly, these backups are essentially replicated copies of the exact files and file structure on my SAN. With a single 4 port 300Mbps SATA card on any server or workstation I can have a completely functional backup for my 6TB worth of document images from my SAN. Performance is a slight issue as the disks I use on these backup disk arrays are set up as RAID-5 using the Silicon Image Java

The performance is awesome. The drive is silent since there's no moving parts. Using a SSD also decrease the heat output and energy usage also. The computer is much cooler and uses less energy than before, thus longer battery life. Before this, I had also purchased an OCZ Core 64GB SSD to use in my new Lenovo at $280. That drive, the OCZ Core, was horrible, the performance on HD Tach was 130MB/sec which is good, but it wasn't the benchmark performance that was bad, it was real world use. To use the OCZ drive as a primary OS drive was impossible. It was plague with stops and stutters. Most of the good reviews about how SSD was so fast are from users using an SLC (single level cell) drive. Usually an OCZ SSD or a G.Skill SSD in a sivler case both of which are a rebranded Samsung drive.This Intel drive is a MLC (multi level cell) drive but intel developed a new technology on how the drive is read and write so it does not suffer from stutters like other MLC drive. This drive performance on HD Tach was equivalent to a RAID (0): SATA WD Raptor 74GB drive at 10,000 rpm. The benchmark on the Intel: Burst speed: 194.4 MB/sec, Average read: 114.3 MB/sec, Random Access: 0.3ms. The benchmark on the Raptor was Burst speed: 197.9 MB/sec, Average read: 110.6 MB/sec and Random Access: 8.6ms. As you can see this drive improves laptop performace by quite a bit. Johnson I bought this SSD to place into a new laptop I purchased (Samsung X460). However, prior to using the new laptop I figured I would install this SSD in my old laptop first, just to see if it made a difference. It did! Vista now boots in about 15 Seconds and shuts down in about 5 seconds! No more need for hibernate mode! Word documents open immediately! Visual Studio projects that used to take 10-20 seconds to open now open in 1-2 seconds! IE opens immediately! The list goes on and on! Needless to say I'm very happy with the results so I returned the new laptop unopened and kept my money.This drive is by far the best upgrade I have ever performed. Since installing it my laptop now runs substantially cooler. It used to get so hot in my lap but not anymore! I will never go back to spinning drives again!The only con I can find about this drive is the storage size. It would be nice to have 120gb+ drive but as of today the larger Intel drive is simply too expensive. To be sure, there are larger drives out there from other manufacturers, but in this price range none come close to the performance of the Intel drive. However, my laptop does have an SD card reader so I slapped in a 16GB SDHC Class 6 card to help out. I use the SD card to hold my music files and other data files. It works out perfect!Again, I highly recommend this SSD. For the price it is the fastest SSD available. The bottleneck in most computers is the hard drive. This item addresses that issue.Performance Tips(to try): If you have enough RAM(3+GB), disable virtual memory. You can also disable pre-fetch. By Randy Connelie I've been heavily using my Drobo over the past month, using it to host multiple databases. Ownership and operation of Drobo has been, in a word, anti-climactic.But don't confuse "anti-climactic" with "disappointing"! Drobo works exactly as advertised and is ridiculously easy to install and use. There's no great sense of accomplishment when Drobo comes online, and even intentionally "failing" drives by removing them gets old after a few demonstrations. The thing just works, and hides all the technical magic behind clean black housing.The front faceplate is attached via magnets. It's easy to pull off, yet plenty secure when attached. I think it's a great design decision over a hinged faceplate, as I can tuck the Drobo into narrower spaces or leave the faceplate off entirely. While most of the faceplate is opaque, there are transparent areas so the drive status lights can be seen. As an added safety feature, the faceplate will not attach properly if any of the gray drive catches are open (an indication that a drive is not properly inserted).The back of Drobo is equally clean. Evident are the large air holes for the internal fan, and the two connectors: USB and power. No power switch or buttons anywhere; Drobo is a literal interpretation of a "black box." There is also a slot for connecting a laptop-style anti-theft cable (so you can lock Drobo to nearby furniture), and a hole for the reset button.Drobo's fan is audible, but easily drowned out amidst normal office noise. I've since tucked Drobo inside a cabinet and I don't expect to hear it even when I'm the only person in the office. I also recommend using "silent" drives, otherwise the clicking of the read/write heads could be distracting.There is some friction when inserting a drive, but nothing unusual. The main source of friction is the gray catch on the left side, which snaps into place once a drive is fully inserted. The drives do not pop out easily, even when the gray catch is pushed aside. Perhaps I don't know the secret yet, but it took some fumbling every time I attempted to remove a drive. While Drobo can utilize any 3.5 inch SATA hard drive, I opted to use a pair of their recommended drives.Drobo connected easily via USB to my limited-account Win2K computer, installing as a generic USB Mass Storage Device. While it attached correctly, I could not use Drobo because my limited user account prohibits formatting any drives. Were it already formatted for NTFS (or I had Administrator rights for my work PC), it would have worked like a charm. I had no problems attaching or formatting with my home Windows XP or Windows Vista PC's (where I have full privileges).Drobo connected just as easily to my nearby eMac running OS X 10.4.9. It took OS X about 10 minutes to format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (aka HFS+). It appeared on the desktop as a generic USB drive icon, which I was able to easily change thanks to a supplied Drobo icon from the Drobo website.The format step brings up my biggest concern for Drobo: portability between Windows and OS X. Drobo officially supports NTFS and HFS+, but not any version of FAT. This makes sense from a technical standpoint but can be an issue for those expecting to use Drobo across both operating systems. FAT, while common and compatible with nearly every current operating system, has limitations that can be frustrating to the unwitting user. These limits include file-size restrictions and the inability to format/use FAT partitions above a relatively low size. Neither NTFS nor HFS+ suffer these restrictions (yet), but Windows cannot easily read/write HFS+ drives, and ditto for OS X and NTFS. FAT can be used, but compatibility will be sketchy due to different versions of FAT and limitations/bugs in the operating system's implementation. In short, format as NTFS for Windows and HFS+ for OS X. I

It never gets warmer than what a normal person's skin feels to the touch while resting. My biggest concern was heat dissipation since I would be keeping this unit on 24/7.What makes it even better is the free extra tray that I received via the rebate!For the price it is a very good value. Simple to set up and use By Welles I purchased this item to use with a Mac Pro after adding the Newer eSATA extender cable which gave me two SATA ports out the back. As a result I have my fastest backup capacity ever...faster than FireWire 800. The ICY DOCK was simple to install, just 6 screws on the tray and slip tie drive in place. A restart is required for the eSATA connector to mount the drive and it operates exactly as an internal drive. On the Mac if you wanted to turn the drive off without shutting down the computer I just use the Disk Utility.app to unmount the drive and turn it off. The USB is hot swappable plug and play. There were no problems or issues encountered in using this drive enclosure. A handy strategy would be to purchase extra drive trays (sleds) and be able to mount different drives. I bought mine after doing quite a bit of research on the net trying to find out everything I could before I chose which 1TB external I wanted. There were too few reviews for me to be sure I was making the right purchase so I'm going to pass on what I've learned about this external.(1) The noise level: I've seen quite a few reviews stating that the drives are extremely loud. This is completely wrong. The drives themselves are extremely quiet in fact, quieter than my older LaCie which I can hear across my room, unlike the WD. What is noisy is the fan, but it runs only very rarely. It runs for a few seconds when you first start it up and then it's a bit noisy but quickly silences itself. During normal running it barely comes on. To give you an idea how much running I do on my externals I have my music on there and I'm listening to it just about 24/7. During that time the fan never comes on. It came on a few times when I was transferring the 100+GB of music to it, but even then it was a short time before it lowered itself down to silence again.(2) The power button: I've also heard complaints about the power button. I just want to clarify some peoples misunderstandings about it so no one else is worried. The power button works just as you would expect, just like my Mac in fact. Push the button to start it up and it starts instantly. When you want to shut it down, after ejecting it, you hold the power button for a few seconds and it shuts down. This is done so you don't accidentally push the big button on the front and shut it off during a big file transfer and damage the drive.(3) RAID 0 or 1 only: This is a small thing for some people but for me it was a bit of a disappointment. You can only select from RAID O or RAID 1, no Linear support. This means you either have to choose having two 500 externals, one the mirror of the other or having your files split in half over both drives. The down side of splitting them like that, in Striped mode, is that if you lose one drive you lose all your files on both.The transfer speed due to FireWire 800 and Striping is extremely fast and in that respect I'm very happy with the external. Wadler For Macintosh users, this device definitely needs some additional instruction. My husband bought the black version of this drive to use with our Macs and Airport Extreme. The first thing to know is that the black version (Premium) comes preformatted as NTFS. You must reformat the drive as HFS+ for the Airport Extreme to recognize it.If you want to use this drive with your Macintosh, you cannot reformat the drive using the USB cable - you MUST plug it directly into the Mac using the Firewire cable (it comes with all the cables). I reformatted the drive to HFS+ using the Disk Utility, then I installed the Firmware update which I downloaded from Western Digital's website, and only then did I use the MyBook RAID utility that came on the CD to mirror the drives. Ashe ----------Update 6 Jan 2010-------------I got this setup to work with Windows 7, albeit no thanks to the tech support for either Sans Digital or Silicon Image, neither of them returned my tech support request email. If you have a Windows 7 system you have to go to the C:\Program Files(x86)\SATARAID folder (or) C:\Program Files\SATARAID folder if you are running Windows 7 32 bit, and change the permissions so that USERS have either Modify or full control rights. Once you change the permissions on the folder, the SATARAID Management utility will open.The software still has a low quality feel, but it appears to be working, so I will leave my review at 3 stars due to lack of tech support.--------Original Review-----------------Had a hard time deciding how to rate this product because the tower itself is high quality, whisper quiet, and is exactly what I was looking for. The hard drive trays lock into place, are made of metal vs cheap plastic and the cooling fan is impressively quiet. The card was detected and the latest driver software installed flawlessly; allowing me to see all of the attached HDs however, I have yet to get them to be presented as a RAID array.The Sans Digital site does not provide any driver support whatsoever which was another reason for my 3 star rating. I got this Tower used from Amazon and it did not have the included driver CD which may be why I am having so many problems. CD or not, manufacturers should provide better support on their site for their products.The Silicon Image site provides a confusing list of driver, RAID management software, and BIOS update options and most links seem to lead you in circles. I have also tried updating the card's BIOS using their update utility and it appears to be incompatible with Windows 7 as well. I really wanted to use this tower as a RAID solution, but may settle for JBOD until Windows 7 support is improved.ConclusionThis product would have gotten 5 stars if the RAID management software supported Windows 7, and if I could update the BIOS on the card using Windows 7. This tower matched with a Windows 7 friendly eSATA multiplier card would be a 5 star combination. Scammell I became a Mac convert four years ago, when I picked up one of Apple's new Intel-based MacBook Pro laptops. I eventually picked up a 20" Apple Cinema Display to use at home when I want the desktop experience. Up to this point I've been very satisfied with Apple's products, particularly their displays. I've been considering upgrading for quite some time now, and about a month ago I decided I to pick up a new 27" iMac quad-core i5. I've always been wary of the notion of the "all-in-one" PC. A selling point on the new 27" iMac is the two-way display port, which will allow you to continue using the iMac display with a new machine when the time to upgrade comes.First the pros:As far as Apple products go, the quad-core iMac represents a bargain. While not as expandable as a Mac Pro, speed benchmark tests have shown a $2k iMac to be comparable to a $2.2k MacPro, with the benefit of a built in screen. I was impressed with the machine's speed and ability to multi-task; I could run both Mac OS X and XP via Parallels, run Aperture and Photoshop CS4 all simultaneously with no trouble. The desktop space afforded by the 27" was great, while having the 20" ACD as a secondary display added to the machine's usability.Now the BIG CON...There was only one flaw with the machine. The display was one of the primary selling points. I'm an amateur photographer, however I was immediately encountering difficulty calibrating the display's color. I quickly determined there was a noticeable shift in color temperature from the top of the screen to the bottom, with the bottom third of the screen displaying a warm and yellowish hue. I quick Google search revealed I was not alone. Disappointed, I called Apple support and arranged an appointment at the local Apple Store. I hauled the big machine back to the store and explained and displayed the issue. The employee behind the Genius Bar seemed genuinely surprised when I showed him and offered a replacement. To be sure the replacement wasn't also a dud, he fired it up on the spot. This machine was worse than the first. A third machine was pulled from the stock room... same issue. The three machines are all manufactured within eight weeks of one another (the first a week 49 machine, the second a week 51 machine and the third a week 45 machine). I was sent home with the third machine offered, but last week returned it, requesting a 100% refund, which was granted. Shooting three for three, I'm under the impression that the problem is more wide-spread than Apple is willing to admit, and represents a fundamental flaw in the hardware. While the tinge is sometimes difficult to notice out of the box, it grows worse with use.Aside from the poor-quality display I enjoyed using the iMac, but I expect more from a product which is billed as a machine "with the ultimate display". I would assume it will take Apple a couple of months to get to the root of the problem and fix whatever flaws exist in the manufacturing process, or the design of the machine itself. Apple has dropped the ball on this one. I would advise anybody in the market for an iMac to wait until the next major upgrade to drop your hard-earned cash on the product.For further reading check out the following website. Extremely Satisfied, Great Support from User Community By dabbuman I convinced myself I needed a NAS to centralize the family's exponential growth of media files if nothing else and also the need to keep backups of home computers. At first I thought I would go what I call the "Apple" route - try to find a device that is idiot proof,provides a great UI, and set it up without having to go into details about NASes. The nearest counterpart would have been the HP MediaSmart line. In fact I actually purchased the HP LX195. Indeed setup etc was great. But very soon, I realized that there was very little customer support, and figuring out how to access the server from online with a VOIP also installed at my home was going to be a pain. Plus everytime it ran the daily backup, the HP would freeze up my home computers (all of which have state of the art processors and 4gb of RAM)So I dumped it and decided to get the Synology DS110j. Installing the hard drive was quite painless (no tools needed). The setup process was also quite easy.The UI is much more bare-bones but it is actually very user friendly in the following sense - There is a wizard that guides you through the basic installation process so that your computer and the NAS device see each other. After that you are kind of on your own- in terms of user accounts, backup choices, etc. At the same time for everything that you would like to do, the options are presented in very simple English and the Help tool on the right bar of the menu system is actually helpful. Everything is reduced to a few sentences and the choices that you need to make are quite clear cut.Finally, i realized I had the same problem as I had with the LX195- how to access the server when you also have a VOIP connection at home (that sits between your cable modem and your router). And here was the difference - with Synology there is a huge community in its support forum who are more than happy to help. As a result what was a hurdle with both Synology and HP MediaSmart was actually easier to cross with the former.So now some of the Pros and ConsOther Pros:- Supports immediate sync (ie it can monitor your home PC/laptops folders and can backup files instantaneously when the file changes)- Logitech Squeezebox support.- very active facebook page! Just what I needed By J. Hicks I was looking for a NAS/Media server, and this turned out to be the best solution overall. I tried a Hackintosh first, and that was fine, but a bit of overkill, and I I wanted minimal power draw so that I would feel OK about leaving it on all the time.Set up is very easy. The Synology Assistant helped with drive formatting (ext2 I think) and getting your administration account going. It took a bit for me to implement all the settings I wanted, but they are very clearly explained in the management screen, and easily changed. The interface is browser based and accessible from all modern browsers regardless of platform. I access it a lot from my iPad.So what can it do? I use it primarily as a media server. It has worked extremely well in this regard. It has UPnP which is picked up by the PS3, Xbox360, and the WDTVLive as just another media server. Streaming is fine without stutter (on a wired network). It has an itunes server, which I use for a large library of Apple Lossless files. This can be served to iTunes (obviously) but Synology has a nifty iPhone/iPad app that will pick up the library as well and transcode just fine. The Audio Station web interface however will only play mp3's, so it isn't as practical to stream to another computer in

By Hugh Massengill I have had this computer for a week now and absolutely love it. The Magic Mouse took a little time to adjust to, but now it is a favorite. The iMac screen is large (I upgraded from the 17" early 2006 intel iMac), but not so big as to be distracting. Apple, of course, made the experience of setting it up and getting online a breeze, even to the point of having the batteries already installed in the keyboard and mouse, and having the two linked to the computer. The pros include the beauty of the LED screen, the speed of the processor, the fact that it shipped with 4GB of ram, well...that it is every bit the consumer friendly machine I have come to expect from Apple. The upgraded graphics card really is noticeable. It is like a vase of flowers...I love to look at it even when it is off. The SD card slot is most handy. It is every bit as quiet as my previous computer.The cons include the fact that my 3.5 year old iMac had a matte screen, and the glass front of this 21.5 " iMac does pick up reflections easily. But since I tend to keep my place dark and being a morning person don't have a lot of sunshine to contend with...for me it is actually a better screen than my old iMac's matte screen. It shipped with Apple's shortened keyboard (no number pad) and that took a bit of acclimation. Technology advances so my old firewire devices now need an adapter to work, firewire 400 to 800, but that is a tiny problem. Wish Apple would build in a fold down port for iPods to recharge. First Mac - Now I know why Mac users are so loyal By Darroch I have been buying PCs for over 15 years and this is my first Mac. I had been considering a Mac over more recent years and decided to take the plunge after hearing other rave reviews of existing users and seeing how superior an IPOD is over a standard MP3 player. I can say that I was not disappointed.First, there's no learning curve at all, and you can easily make the transition from PC to Mac. I could not say the same about going from windows XP to Vista, which was incredibly frustrating and I consider myself somewhat tech savvy. The operating system is intuitive and very simple to use. I did not really have to search for much of anything or how to do anything. It's that straight forward.The most obvious thing that you see immediately is it's simplicity. A monitor with all the typical tower stuff integrated (as well as the speakers), a wireless keyboard and mouse. You literally have one wire running from the monitor to the wall if you have wireless networking. That in itself is a reason to consider as not many PCs offer that option.You also don't have a million external buttons to press to operate this device, everything is selected from the desktop, including the volume. I was quite impressed with the sound quality. It rocks.The display is crystal clear and you don't get any shake. The OS is lightning fast and browsing the web is faster than anything I ever experienced with a PC. Performing backups is as simple as attaching your backup drive with the Time Warp feature.While the price is considerable higher than a PC, the ease of use along with the security features make it a great purchase I wasn't completely sure about this purchase beforehand, but glad I took a leap of faith based on the feedback that I got from the loyal Mac owners I know.I will probably never go back and I am pretty confident that my husband will be getting a Mac notebook next time around.....If you are considering making the change, I highly recommend it. 56 of 57 people found the following review helpful. Put a 2.5" sata drive in it and you've got a portable drive accessible via either Firewire 400 or USB2. Comes with a two-port USB cable and a six-pin firewire cable. The USB cable has two plugs on it, presumably to pick up the power from two ports if you need to.For firewire, no extra power supply is needed, provided you use a 6-pin firewire cable like the one included.I'm using a Hitachi 200gb 7200rpm drive, no problems. This drive originally came in my Macbook Pro, which I upgraded to a larger drive.The Tango case functions perfectly as a bootable firewire drive with my original OSX partition in it. FWIW, I used SuperDuper to copy the data off the external case and onto the new internal drive. It took a little over two hours to copy 170GB from the enclosure to the internal drive.The build quality is good. The case is aluminum, and the end caps are plastic. Inside a full-length PCB slides out to attach the drive to. This is not a cheap PCB that sticks on the end of a drive, only to loosen later. The drive attaches firmly to the connector and then two screws hold it to the PCB. The end of the case is vented and has a blue/purple activity LED. The case definitely sheds heat.I'm extremely pleased with this thing. I'm glad I thought to look for firewire, because it wasn't coming up among the best-selling USB-only enclosures. This is the best of both worlds for a very reasonable price.EDIT: Also, check out the Firewire 800 version of this baby if you want a little more speed. Henson This is a very nice enclosure. I am using it along with a Western Digital Black 320 GB HD and my mac. I have tried both FireWire and USB and have not had any issues. The enclosure is strong an sturdy as well as sleek and classy. My only suggestion would be to have a power switch but it's not that big of a deal. Great price. Most 2.5 inch enclosures do not include a firewire interface, which was a must for me. I put a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB drive in the case and it works great. I use the drive to transport videos from my Mac desktop to my Apple TV (with the Fire Core ATV Flash software installed). I load the videos over firewire and attach the drive to the Apple TV using USB. Robinson I bought this drive (through reseller Oyen Digital on Amazon) in order to upgrade the harddrive inside my PS3. Even though it was physically the right size, no one had tested it yet that I could find. I decided to take a chance and test it out.I am happy to report that there are no problems using this drive to replace the internal PS3 drive. The upgrade was painless and several tutorials exist online to show you how.After I switched out the drives and turned the PS3 back on, it ask me to format the new drive before I continued. This took about 30 seconds. After the format I went to the system information tab and checked the free space.After the format the system was reporting 413GB / 465GB Free Space. SWEET!UPDATE: This drive died in March 2009, so I got about 7 months of use out of it. Looking back, movie files were getting corrupted quite often throughout it's lifespan. Eventually it dies completely and when I would boot the PS3, only the wallpaper would show. The drive installed very quickly and easily, and the reformatting only took a few seconds. I had the same results when I checked the system settings, with 413GB of free space out of 465GB. The whole process of taking out the hard drive and replacing it only took about 10-15 minutes, but be careful if you try it as the screws on the tray which hold the hard drive in the PS3 do strip easily, and I had problems with one of them. Kopac This NAS case is easy to setup and works fine for windows, but although the manual claims it works with OS X, I was not able to access it from 10.6.6 and spent several days researching and attempting with SMB and otherwise. The manual is very brief. I did upgrade the firmware along the way and some of the features did not work right. I was not able to set a hard IP for the unit. Although I could ping the unit and access it with a winxp box, I could only see the box, but not authenticate with SMB. I had a simplenet previously and went to a NUS1000 which works great all around with the latest firmware on OSX and all win boxes. You must set it up with a winX machine first though. I used a vm on a mac to do it. Once you've done that and upgraded the firmware you can configure it with win or OS X with almost any browser. Use FAT32 ext for the partition.02/11/2011 UpdateI received a email with firmware upgrades from coolmax. The instructions he gave me in the email to make the NAS work were as follows:1. Using USB, delete all the partitions made on the drive2. Create another partition but DO NOT format the drive.3. Remove USB and plug RJ45/Ethernet cable4. Reset the unit.> When you reset, you turn on and press the reset immediately before the> lan port blinks for 10 seconds. Turn it off and use scantool to> search for ip again.5. Once you have the IP address, do not use scantool to configure the NAS; use web interface.6. Login to web interface7. Format the drive using web interface8. You have the option to do the firmware update again; the attachment contains 3 firmware updates. You can choose any of the three.9. You should be ready and all else are in the manualThey sent me 3 versions of the firmware of which 2 I tried. The firmware version R3282-1.56d W1.31 works perfect for Win or Mac platforms and is much faster and more reliable than the NUS1000 now. I must forewarn anybody that you need to use smb to access the cn-390 (CMD K) on a mac. I'm used to a corporate environment and this is typical. Initial access/setup will need to be done on a win machine or VM. Although I got a very good firmware upgrade for the NUS1000 I decided to send it back because I have had it crash during long copy sessions and this cn-390 has not. One simply removes the two rear screws and the installation of your hard disc is obvious. The user manual is absolutely wretched, written by a Taiwanese person with only a basic understanding of English. The device works with Linux as well as Mac & Windows, but the manual and the setup are only geared toward Windows users. I use Ubuntu Linux, and the device was recognizable and usable immediately, both via USB and over the network. The browser page interface, especially the Samba and FTP setup, takes some pondering before you know what you're doing (again the manual is pretty much worthless to this end).I like that it has a hard drive sleep function and a cooling fan. I would have liked to have a setting for what temperature the fan comes on and goes off at.
