The only software I've needed for the drive is Time Machine. It started right up with Time Machine backups. I have it hooked directly to my iMac via Firewire 400. The drive goes to sleep when the computer sleeps and awakens when the computer does. I have it partitioned into 2 partitions - one for backups and one for video files (which I back up on DVD's). The drive is completely quiet. As an aside, my wife has been wirelessly backing up her MacBook to a Seagate FreeAgent Go 150GB drive that we got last year -- it was PC formatted and I changed it to Mac OS Extended Journaled and it has been flawless for almost a year now -- it is USB-connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station. The 5-year limited warranty offered by Seagate is also great. Note: if the drive doesn't sleep when the computer does, you may just need to check "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" in the "Energy Saver" settings of "System Preferences" and also shorten the times for screen sleep and computer sleep if it bothers you to have the drive light on when you aren't using the computer. 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Seamless for use with a Mac By Eastnortheast Absolutely no problems with this hard drive. I bought it specifically to use with the Time Machine function on my Mac. I could have spent a bit less and gotten an equivalent sized hard drive that was not configured for the Mac, but being an beginner/intermediate computer user, I wanted something that would work with minimal input on my side. I have not been disappointed. There is not much documentation that comes with the hard drive itself; just a "quick start" guide. However, that is enough. Out of the box, I plugged it into my iMac via the firewire connection, clicked on Time Machine and presto, it was done. I have had it running for about a month - it has basically been invisible. It runs in the background doing automatic backups and I really dont even know that it is there. The hard drive is quiet, and takes up hardly any space on my desk. It is styled so that it fits in very well with the brushed metallic look of the iMac. It does require its' own power source, though this is a minor inconvenience. All in all, I give it 5 starts. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Works great for Time Machine and great 5 year warranty By Allan Ray Miller Took it out of the box, plugged it into a power strip and into my 13" aluminum Macbook, configured it for Time Machine backups, and it has been working great ever since. Simple. I really liked the 5 year warranty. To me that was the key selling point. All disk drives have some failure rate, and you can find complaints against all manufacturers. But most vendors ship their products with 1 or 2 year warranties at most. I researched many other products and was delighted to see that Seagate is willing to stand behind their products for that extended warranty duration. My suggestion is before you buy a disk drive, any drive, check out the manufacturer's web site for the warranty information first. See all 19 customer reviews...

This Harddrive has it's Flaws By CJ I've had this harddrive to backup my data for my iMac for 1 1/2 Years now... it never gets hot like my old harddrive, when writing data you can hear it and it is difficult to turn it on at times, I've had to press the power button several times to get it to turn on. However, It's always cool to the touch, which means it has proper air circulation which many more compact externals don't have which shortens their life span. Overall, it is fairly decent but with a high price tag you should get a better hard drive than this. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Was fine until it failed (and replacement failed) By James J. Horning The Verbatim 1TB drive worked just fine for about seven months. Then one day it just refused to power up. The On/Off switch had no effect, even though the power adapter was delivering 12 VDC to its power socket. Customer support SUCKS! There is nothing remotely relevant in the (sketchy) troubleshooting section of the documentation. To get online support I had to register and get a password, which was supposed to be emailed to me, but didn't arrive. A week later, when I requested a resend, I got a password in a few hours. When I logged in, I discovered that the "Comment" from Verbatim Technical Support consisted of three suggestions, each of which individually revealed that VTS had not understood what I had said, followed by the instruction to call them on a (non-toll-free) number that does not operate nights and weekends. This is still under warranty, but my expectations are not high; I am buying a different brand for a replacement, and will use the Verbatim for a spare if they fix it. Incidentally, I consider it a design flaw that the On/Off switch is "soft": Even when it works, after a power failure, the disk must be manually switched on again after power is restored, which can cause serious problems when the system is running unattended. Added 12/19/2009: After less than nine months, the replacement failed in exactly the same way. I will never buy another Verbatim product. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. External Case Quit Working By jb_kyfan I also had this product for about 1 year and it worked flawlessly. Just today I tried using it and it would not power up. After reading the reviews here, I did not want to send my hard drive back in for warranty repair since I would lose all my data so I opened up the device and put the hard drive internally into my computer and it worked just fine. Makes it difficult to use as a backup drive for my other systems now but at least I can get to my data. I'll probably buy a new external housing for it so I can use it as an external drive. In the future, I'll be sure to recommend to others to do the same (buy the drive and external housing separately). See all 15 customer reviews...

Excellent for SOHO servers By Marco Figueiredo I have a Dell PowerEdge T610 at home for archiving regular data (spreadsheets and so on), photos and home-made videos. I also work with TI and it serves as my lab. The server is always on - 24x7 - and with all 8 bays occupied, I was tired of replacing regular PC WD 2 GBytes discs every month. After some tests with a couple of these Hitachi hard drives, I decided to replace all disks in my server. Couldn't be happier! The I/O is twice faster than before and no more disks dying all the time. The rebuilt of a 3 Tb disk in RAID 6 took no longer than 3 hours. Also they are very, very quite. If you need space and reliability, I couldn't find anything better. See all 1 customer reviews...

Longo The Caviar Black model of drives differ in three ways from Blue in three major ways: 1) 32MB buffer vs 16MB. This means the drive is overall faster because it can store more data in memory local to the drive. So if you access the same data frequently there is little or no drive access to get at the data. 2) Dual processors vs single. This will alleviate the load on your CPU as the drive itself has more processing power locally. 3) Five year warranty vs three. Five years is a lifetime in hardware. Basically, you're covered for longer than you will most likely use the drive. The Caviar Black line comes in three four sizes; 1TB, 750GB, 640GB, and 500GB. The 1TB and 640GB are the fastest because they use a denser platter technology which allows the drive head to get at the data quicker. The 750GB and 500GB are no slouches though and the differences in speed will not be noticeable to most people under most real-world usage scenarios. Caviar Black drives are the fastest affordable consumer drives available today. If you want faster you have to look that the VelociRaptor 10000RPM line of drives but expect to pay a lot more for a lot less storage. I measured the speed of the 750GB model using the HD Tune utility and access time was a fast 12.5ms with less than 1% CPU usage on my 3.2Ghz Intel Quad Core setup. The drive runs cool at 32°C in my system and is quiet. Overall a great drive at a great price. You can't really go wrong. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great for Mac Pro By A. Flynn works great in my mac pro machine, 32mb cache loads everything speedy and efficiently. read/writes quiet.. kudos on the great packing amazon provided, solid and safe.. removed my noisy seagate for this super drive.. recommended for all mac pro developers and users.. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Large and Fast By Bob R, Niwot I've been a Seagate user forever, but have been disturbed by some of the reports of failures for their large drives. Decided to switch to WD, the Caviar "Black". Disk installed easily. Performed full format, transferred a couple of hundred Gig, and have been using the disk for about 3 weeks. No problems. This is also a very fast disk -- data write tests show a write speed of 70-75 MBytes/sec, when transferring information from memory (as opposed to disk-to-disk, when bus interactions can have a larger impact). The Western Digital is a good 12-15% faster than my other disks. Sale price was very good ($90). While not the highest capacity disk, the trade-off for speed and perceived reliability seems to be worth it! See all 38 customer reviews...

Comparison of ReadyNAS Duo, Iomega ix2, LaCie, HP for small office use By Edward Barnett This product is one of a number of network attached storage (NAS) devices on the market targeted at small offices and home users. If you're not familiar with NAS devices, the concept is simple: A NAS device contains one or more hard drives and plugs directly into your network (i.e., your router). When compared to simple USB hard drives that plug directly into a computer, a NAS offers a number of advantages: 1) It is accessible to any computer on your network. This is convenient at home, since you can use the NAS as a central repository for files (documents, photos, music files, etc.) that you might want to access from any of a number of different PCs. In a small office, having a central storage location for key files (client documents, contact lists, etc.) can be critical. 2) In principle, you could achieve the same benefit by attaching a big USB drive to one PC, setting that PC up to share its files, then leaving that PC on all the time. But these NAS devices are better optimized for file sharing, use far less energy, and take up far less space than a full PC. 3) Most of these NAS devices have something called RAID. They have (or allow you to install) multiple hard drives in the same unit, then they write every bit of data to multiple drives. This way, if one drive fails (as they are prone to do), the NAS can automatically switch over to the other drive and you don't lose any data. One HUGE warning, though - RAID only protects you from drive failure. NAS devices still have plenty of "single points of failure," including the power supply, controller, etc. I lost all of my data on a LaCie Network Disk because of a software glitch in the unit, even though all the individual drivers were fine. RAID reduces your risk of losing files, but it does not eliminate it. 4) Because the NAS is always available to any PC on the network, it's a great solution for backing up individual PCs, in addition to operating as a file server. I am currently using a number of different NAS products in both my small business and my home. Here is a summary of the pros and cons of the three models I am currently using: Netgear's ReadyNAS Duo, EMC Iomega's ix2, and LaCie's Ethernet Disk RAID NAS. I'll call out only areas in which I see significant differences between the products. Also, this review is intended mainly for small office users - the features you might care about for a home NAS are likely to be different (e.g., you'd probably care about how well it works as an iTunes library or for streaming movies, neither of which is key in our office setting). Here goes: 1) Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. This is a smaller, two-drive version of Netgear's ReadyNAS product (originally developed by a company called Infrant, which Netgear acquired). It takes up very little space, uses relatively little power, and is fairly quiet. Reads and writes to this device are very fast, which is important when running backups. The ReadyNAS has a particularly robust feature set when it comes to backing up the NAS to another device on the network. This is important, since even with RAID, it's possible that the whole device will fail (e.g., if the power supply goes bad), so you want to make sure you back up your NAS regularly. Setup isn't hard, but you have to know what you're doing - this device is clearly targeted at somewhat technical users who know the terminology and are willing to work through all the configuration menus. This is our primary file server in our office, and it has been a reliable workhorse. About once every 2-3 months, I need to log on to fix something that has glitched - other than that, the ReadyNAS Duo has required no effort beyond setup. It's one of the best small NAS products I've used. 2) Iomega ix2. Iomega is now owned by EMC, the company that creates the monster-sized storage devices for

With the use of the sata and usb cable together both function. Wish you could just use one to get the same effect though. The all aluminum construction means the enclosure has a nice heft and rigid feel to it that cheaper plastic enclosures can't compare to. Heat dissipation is great because of the all aluminum construction, which means your hard drive will last longer. The Oxford 934 chipset means that connections are reliable and transfer speeds are very quick, especially utilizing one of the two Firewire 800 ports. The hard drive is secured to the enclosure by 4 screws and makes it feel like one solid piece of kit. You get 1 Firewire 400, 2 Firewire 800 and one mini USB 2.0 port, plus a useful on/off toggle switch and a power input. The enclosure does not come with a power supply (which as this price, it should). It does come with a power cable that connects to two USB ports if you need the extra juice as well as a similar cable that connects from the mini USB enclosure port to two USB ports on your computer. What impressed me, though, were the included Firewire 400 and 800 cables that are thick heavy duty quality cables. I have had no issues powering my drive on any Mac just using the Firewire bus. Another great feature of the enclosure is that it accepts standard 9.5mm drives as well as the higher capacity 12.5mm drives that so far go up to 1TB. I'm not sure if the higher capacity drives require more juice and cannot be driven by a standard USB bus, but the having the option is great to future proof the enclosure. All in all, a quality enclosure that I would happily purchase again. 12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't format new drives in this enclosure in OS X By немам името I ordered the Oyen MiniPro 2.5-inch FireWire 800/400, USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure for use with a 640 GB 7200 RPM 2.5" two-platter (9.5-mm) drive and a 750 GB 5400 RPM 2.5" three-platter (12.5-mm) drive. Pros: -- Build quality of the MiniPro enclosure feels solid. -- This is one of the very few FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) portable enclosures that will hold a high-capacity 12.5-mm 2.5" laptop hard drive. As far as I know, 750 GB and 1 TB 2.5" drives are available only in three-platter 12.5-mm form. Cons: -- I was unable to format the 640 GB 7200 RPM drive in the enclosure either via USB bus power (Y-cable) or via FireWire 800 power from my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro. I found that others using this enclosure with Mac OS X have had the same problem. Some have been able to solve the problem by formatting the drive in Windows first. I was able to successfully format the same drive using my Voyager Q hard drive docking station via FireWire 800. I don't know whether the problem is due to underpowered bus on the laptop, a problem with Disk Utility (diskutil) in Mac OS X 10.6, or a defect in the enclosure itself. I did not test the enclosure with the 750 GB drive after finding that I could not use it with the 640 GB drive. I also did not test the enclosure hooked up to an external power adapter (not provided with the product). I ended up returning the MiniPro. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great expansion case for mac using Firewire800 By boulderbob Terrific external HDD case. I bought this because I needed a new portable external HD. Firewire800 is so much better/faster than USB speeds so this was my primary criteria. The case works great, has an off switch, and two ports for daisy chaining to other drives... cool. No problems after two weeks of use. Great value and solid product. See all 22 customer reviews...

By HZ I've only had it for about a week now, but it's quite easy to use and the transfer speeds are nice! Although I can't yet speak to the longevity of the product, it's very flexible and I'm happy so far. Having so many interfaces means I can connect in the best way to any of my computer configurations. Systems used: Macbook Pro 15" - OS X 10.5 - Firewire and USB Dell Latitude e6410 - Ubuntu 10.10, Windows 7, OS X 10.6 - Firewire and eSATA Pros: - Works with every OS/connection I've tried. - Has very nice transfer speeds with FW and eSATA. - Able to quickly swap drives (unmount, turn off, switch drive, turn on) - Drives stay cool Cons: - None yet, I will update if/when problems arise. Drive Use: I've used larger, power hungry 3.5" drives as well as delicate 2.5" laptop drives in here and all have worked flawlessly. I did an initial backup of data to a 3.5" drive which ran for somewhere around 6-hours and the drive never got very hot (being exposed is sort of like a built-in convection cooling system!). That drive also ran all weekend and there were not problems during that time. Although in general I only run the drives for a few hours and then store them away. I've also done a FireWire daisy-chain through my LaCie 2Big drive and had no problems accessing (reading/writing) the drive through and extended (several hours) backup cycle which was using both drives on that daisy-chain. Backups: Although I've got a RAID system to back up important data, it is filling up and I find that there are things that don't really need to take up space on my RAID (e.g. movies), but I want to keep backed up (just in case). It's great to use my old spare hard drives (I've got a couple of 500gb 3.5" drives that _used_ to be the RAID, just collecting dust) that I can now use as large USB drives! Just stick it in, transfer data, remove and put it back on the shelf! This is really nice way to store data "just in case" and it's so painless to change drives! Test out OS: I can connect this drive with eSATA and install an OS or some specific configuration and boot to that drive to see how I like the configuration, BEFORE changing my drive with all my settings/data on it! I really like the ability to test out a new OS without taking up space on my internal HD or (worse) upgrading my current OS to find that something doesn't work like I want and then trying to downgrade (not easy in ANY OS I've seen). I currently have a triple-boot laptop and it's a real pain to change, so I really like having the ability to test a system before committing to the change! I've also noticed that the eSATA transfer is quite speedy, even on a laptop! Oh, USB: To be sure, I've connected through USB and done some transferring to make sure it works, but since my computers have other interfaces, I will only use USB when required. It's SO slow to transfer anything more than 1GB. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The brave little toaster... By Hip Audio At first the relatively thin plastic casing made me worry that this might be cheaply constructed, but it's proven to be a solid little device and quite convenient. I'm using it to track Pro Tools recording sessions and audio files to and then handing my clients the drives when we're done. I also use it to catalog sound effects and recording sessions onto hard drives that I'm now able to insert, use, remove and store in their own plastic cases like little VHS tapes. Pretty cool! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfect By Seymore B. This item has worked flawlessly. I initially purchased it because my 2003 model HP Desktop lacked any of the newer SATA connections. It works out and now I can make use of the 1TB disk drive that has been stored for about a month. It features 2 fire wire ports as well. Not sure why you would need two but at least they are there. Supposedly PCs

By rbhatta This is going to be a long review as the product's expectations need to be set right for buyers of this product. To give you a background from where I come from let me start with the fact that I work for a Global IT company that has been developing and selling Enterprise class RAID storage solutions for years, since the good old SCSI RAID days and since we have been developing Fibre-channel and SAS storage devices and ventured into cloud computing and we very well understand the limitations and expectations from customers. The most common complaint we have is my NAS is performing slow, The WEB UI sucks, or it takes forever to rebuild my RAID array. But these common complaints are nothing really to do with the product hardware but how customer accesses and uses his NAS storage and what expectations were set during the sale of the solution to customer. Coming to BlackArmor NAS 440 NAS storage device from Seagate, The product documentation is clear! This was designed for a "shared storage" for small businesses, if someone hopes that they can use it in a home environment they will be disappointed especially if multiple devices trying to stream high bitrates of Blu-Ray or MKV HD video, or Video files out of Hi-Def camcorder etc; out of this box; but for people who edits small word doc or excel files in a shared CIFS environment and backup purposes in a small office environment it is perfect little device that is protected by RAID 1 or 5 redundancy and encryption for peace of mind. There is a lot of negativity shared by users of this product here on Amazon and elsewhere, But we have to be realistic about the expectations out of 7200 rpm SATA interfaced hard drives in RAID 5 configuration, There is only so much those SATA interfaced drives can do with a severely underpowered RAID/Server controller with multiple possible services that it is running. Enterprise class RAID storage uses SAS Drives and or Dual channel Fibre Channel drives for redundancy and the spindle RPM of those drives can be as high as 15000 for faster data access and generally supplemented by a very powerful controller (CPU) backed up by a huge data cache and battery backup protected for Power failures etc; But all that comes with a huge cost for small businesses that they may never use the full potential of an enterprise class RAID storage, But for a device that costs little over $600 and has almost all popular access methods of file sharing IMHO is quite adequately priced and performs just okay. Agreed that the web UI is slow and there is very little one can tinker, But again, remember for whom this was designed for... It was not for people trying to boot off this device and play games, or stream HD video for TV or similar media hungry devices, it was designed for mom and pop shop owners who like to have a backup data storage device in their backroom just in case if their laptops or desktop PC's were to crash. The included client Backup software component is a pretty good value as it includes 10 licenses and does its job relatively well. The other plethora of services that little device has to offer includes FTP, CIFS, NFS, Printer spooler, WIKI server, Media Streaming, Global access, NTP, ISCSI and Drive encryption is impressive, but again if one decides to use all those services simultaneously you are going to have a performance issue when trying to access data stored on the four HDDs in RAID configuration. DO's and Don'ts DO's RAID Level (Suggest to keep at RAID 5 with 4 HDDs) 1. Make sure that you keep the RAID 5 array that is shipped from factory; this will give you peace of mind if any one of the HDD's was to fail. Alternatively, RAID 0 offers the full advertised 4TB capacity and slightly better performance, but even if one HDD fails, you will lose all your data. It is not worth that risk for that slight performance gain. Network

Be sure that your OS and hardware support 3tb hard drives. When I first installed this drive it only showed up as 760gb, but after a little research saw the fix was to update my BIOS. With the current BIOS my computer accepted the drive without a hitch. Be sure to choose GPT not MBR when initializing the disk. HD Tune gave these results on my disk Min 64 MB/sec Max 132.9 MB/sec Avg 102.3 MB/sec Temp 29C (28c at idle) Access Time: 14.2 ms Burst Rate 162.1 MB/sec 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Cheap, big and slow By M. Wang My experience with Hitachi (used to be IBM) drives has not been as pleasant as those with Seagate or Western Digital, but this 3TB monster is by far the cheapest and biggest drive on the market. Its slowness is not much an issue as I plan to use it for large data storage only. I decide to give it a try.Getting Windows to recognize a drive bigger than 2.2 TB takes some efforts. Both Asus, which manufactured the motherboard, and Hitachi itself offer little programs to help. In the end, the Hitachi one (by Paragon) works better. It even partitions and formats the drive for me. No BIOS update is necessary. My computer is 3 years old and only has SATA II. I get a sustained write speed of 84 MB/s when copying 1 TB of old data over. Auslogics Disk Defrag runs noticeably more slowly on this Hitachi than the Seagate 7200rpm drive it replaces, but I don't expect to defrag it often. Overall, a decent buy so far. The only question remaining is how long it will last. Of this, I have my concerns, as this Hitachi does run much hotter than the Seagate and WD drives in the same enclosure. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It works as advertised By MoreBits The drive worked when installed in my computer. The 3T drive was not recognized by a USB backup system that was my original plan. See all 4 customer reviews...

Howes Short version: I installed this in my aluminum unibody MacBook. It works fine. I have oodles of free space. It's pretty quiet. At the time, I think it was the largest capacity 9.5mm tall notebook drive available. Long version: I didn't really want to upgrade my MacBook. I had plenty of room on the 500GB hard drive I had purchased just 6 months before, also a Western Digital Scorpio Blue, but something was wrong, and I didn't know what. My applications were stalling out after disk intensive operations. I tried re-installing OS X, rebuilding the Spotlight database, fixing permissions, everything and it still happened. So in desperation, I decided to upgrade my hard drive a little early, going up to this 640GB, even though it was the same brand that might have been failing me. And for whatever reason, it's worked reliably ever since. Remember to de-authorize your iTunes account on the original drive before removing it, and do a final Time Machine backup (assuming you make Time Machine backups) before shutting down. Anyone who remembers the pain of exchanging the hard drive out of a PowerBook G4 or even a white Intel MacBook, can appreciate the ease involved in swapping hard drives from the unibody line of Apple portables. A latch, 5 screws and an SATA cable are all that stand in your way. You will need a small Phillips head screwdriver and a T6 torx screwdriver. It literally takes 3 minutes to swap the drives. Then you can either rebuild from a Time Machine backup or from the original drive, assuming you have an external hard drive case or a USB to SATA adaptor. This drive had too large a capacity for an external case I bought in 2008 which was rated up to 500GB. I had to put the old drive in the case to retrieve data, and the new drive in the MacBook to format it. Remember that when you format a MacBook's boot drive with Disk Utility to make sure you are using the GUID option for your journaled HFS+ boot partition. That bit me once on an external drive and it took me 3 reformats to figure out what I was missing. Double and triple check that you are formatting the new drive and not the old drive!!! I chose this drive because it was at the time the highest capacity 9.5mm tall notebook available. There are 12mm tall drives with higher capacity, but those will not fit comfortably in a MacBook. This drive is not going to make you jump around with joy, it stores your data, it's moderately fast for a 5400RPM drive, it is not noisy, and it's comparatively inexpensive. So it's a solid value. And it prevents me from wasting my time looking for things to throw away. Have you ever spent half an hour throwing away old files to free up 20 cents worth of hard drive space? Our time is too valuable for that. Just get a bigger drive; they are cheap. I hope this is my last disk base hard drive in my laptop. Solid state drives are rapidly dropping in price, and raising in capacity, and the speed advantage is game changing. Maybe this time next year, I'll make the move. Still this drive has the capacity to keep me going. 51 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Largest upgrade option for any PS3 and laptops that need 2.5"/9.5mm-height SATA HDDs By A. Dent QUICK EVALUATION The Western Digital 640GB 2.5" SATA is a quiet, reliable, easy to install, drive. The 2.5"/9.5mm SATAs easily and perfectly mount inside a PS3's or laptop's drive bay where they can replace the laptop's or the PS3's original 20-40-60-80-160GB drive or the new PS3 120GB SLIM's without voiding the warranty. Same should hold true for the upcoming PS3's 250GB model. The minor price difference between purchasing a 250GB Slim vs. upgrading an existing 120GB PS3 to 500GB or 640GB should make such an upgrade attractive to anyone who feels that 200-400GB of extra storage are needed. At the time of this review, the 640GB does

Works Great - Neat Design By Alexander Piskarev My goal was to purchase a 4 drive USB enclosure that supported the latest 2TB drives. I have a bunch of these drives so I can test right away. My first attempt was the Sans Digital TowerRAID TR4U-B 4 Bay SATA to USB 2.0 JBOD/Spanning Enclosure (Black): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LF40OU/ref=oss_product Based on the reviews you would think this would work well, and also based on the description "Supports the latest 2TB Hard Drive. Up to 8TB in storage capacity. (*Max. 2TB volume when in Spanning mode)." You would think it's the best choice. Think again. I owned 2 of these, one from newegg and one from Amazon. I got one from newegg tried it with a few 2TB drives, and it does NOT recognize them. I thought that maybe the newegg model was older so I contacted Sans Digital for support, they replied promptly asking me for the makes/serials of the drives that I used. I sent them high resolution pictures of the drives that don't work. No reply. I ordered another one from Amazon, thinking that it must support 2TB drives, because it says so in the description. Wrong again. Returning as we speak. So I popped the Sans Digital from newegg open to find the chipset that it's using. It was an IDE chipset and had the markings "D8927GC-002" on it. Strange, because this is a SATA box. I tracked the company that makes these to a Japanese company named Workbit. The chip is also called the USAT-3. Sans Digital Chipset Datasheets: [..] 60Mhz whoopie! It's kind of old. Then, the Sans Digital uses an IDE to SATA bridge made by CFI. CFI no longer exists ([..]) and so I couldn't find any specs on that. This was not the storage box I was looking for, it had no chance of supporting the 2TB drives that I wanted. Right now I'm trying to return both of these. So I did some research on this StarTech model and their website clearly states what chipset they use. A sure sign that these guys are not hiding anything. Here is the datasheet: [..] I am very impressed with this model. Advantages over Sans Digital: * Properly supports 2TB drives. * Modern chipset. * Smaller form factor. Yes, this houses 4 drives but is significantly smaller that the Sans Digital model. * Better design. No comparison here from the finish on the outside to all the details inside, this is a FAR superior unit. * Drives have attachable handles for easy removal. These also provide padding and ensure a secure connection then the spring loaded front bracket is closed. * Has a metal bracket that ensures the drives are well secured in the unit, screw-less design here. The drive handles are however attached once using 2 screws, but once attached, drive can be swapped in and out very easily. Brilliant. * Front spring push-locked door. This is actually removable, if you need quick access to swap the drives often. Again, brilliant. * Detailed indicator lights on the front. * Can connect both esata and USB at the same time to 2 different computers. Swap between which computer will see the device with a push button on the front (I did not try this). * Silent fan, controlled by a thermistor (temperature sensor). Also can be put into manual mode. * Each drive has an activity indicator light. It's integrated in a very slick way with the front bezel. Cons: * There MUST be a drive in the TOP slot or else the USB will not connect. This is probably what one of the reviewers was experiencing. * Drive handles may be a problem if swapping drives often between different make enclosures. This is not the case for me, and you can actually not use them if you want to. Just to reiterate the above point, if there is no drive in the first TOP slot, the unit will not power on properly and will not be recognized by your computer. This seems like a great unit, they should be selling more of these. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Simply the best external storage

By Wavey Davey Hitachi HD's always deliver amazing performance, and this Retail Boxed 2.5" 7200RPM 500GB SATA II notebook drive does not disappoint! Using HD Tune Pro 3.50 I charted my example from more than 100MB/sec (Actual 108MB/sec) for the highest speed it reads to a low of just less than 50MB/sec, for an average across the volume of 80.5MB/sec. That makes this HD the fastest 2.5" notebook 7200RPM HD I've ever tested, and I've tested a bunch of them--all good mind you, but this Hitachi 16mb Cache 7200RPM 500GB SATA II HD is simply the King of the Hill @ 80.5MB/sec average speed across the whole volume...just incredible! I have uploaded the image of that performance here at Amazon.com so you can see it for yourselves, because it should be seen to be believed, and I've done that for all of you to see just how good this HD really is. The seek speed is 17.9MB.sec across the volume, which does *not* beat a Western Digital Scorpio Black 7200RPM 320GB HD, but it has less area to cover in terms of overall size, and it is a good 15-20MB/sec slower overall than the Hitachi is, @ just over 64/MB/sec for its top speed. The other nice characteristic of Hitachi notebook HD's is their acoustical noise, or rather a lack of it, and this HD doesn't disappoint there either, as it's virtually silent as it goes about it business, reading and writing in my Asus UL30Vt-X1 13.3" notebook. In fact I cannot hear a thing from the Hitachi HD, it's that silent, doesn't make even a whirring noise, just is silent as can be for a HD...so Kudos for Hitachi Global Storage for making this the best 7200RPM 2.5" HD in the world today. I can't stress enough how good this retail boxed HD really is, but with 16GB Cache and a fast 7200RPM speed, it really makes mincemeat out of any reading or writing assignment. And it's a nice package, the retail box itself, of course! There's the HD which is mounted inside the box in its special carrier, to prevent damage inside the box during shipping, and it's also wrapped up in a special "Moisture Proof" Electro-static Bag, which has a big packet of anti-static Silica Gel inside the bag, so Hitachi is taking no chances with the shipment of their precious HD's. I always prefer buying a Retail Boxed HD also, because human hands don't touch them, they are always secure inside of their boxes in their special carrier assemblies, and this box and packaging is no doubt one of the best in that regard. It comes with a Seal across the top tab and flap, so you can be certain that nobody has opened the HD up and tampered with it, changed it, or stolen it! So that's a good thing too, the Retail Box of this HD itself. With an average speed of more than 80MB/sec across the volume according to my testing, and a Burst Speed of more than 145 MB/sec, I have never seen a 2.5" notebook HD perform like this, other than a WD Raptor 10K Enterprise HD, of course...one of those will outperform this HD, but that is about it! And that HD is NOT a 9.5mm form factor so it won't fit in a notebook anyway. This is, at this time, the fastest 2.5" notebook 7200RPM HD in the world bar none, and you can buy it here at Amazon.com in its Retail Box, secure and safe in there away from human tampering and screw-ups, and bad packaging, all of the good reasons to always purchase HD's in retail boxes if possible, so there you go! I give the Hitachi 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache HD my solid 5-Stars Endorsement and approval, and recommend it over any and all other choices, Seagate, Western Digital, whatever the other choices are they are no match for this HD. This is the best, Hitachi GST's premiere 500GB 2.5" SATA II HD, and you can get it here at Amazon.com for a pittance, and have the best of all worlds: speed, big size, and the security of knowing it's going to come to you in a Retail Box, not a

Nelson I bought this drive for my iMac (2008 model) and used it with Time Machine and it worked fine until it failed 9 months later. Disk Utility could not repair it. Sigh. 12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. DIDN'T EVEN LAST 4 MONTHS!!! By de la selva I bought this hard drive in March and put about 500 gigs of info on it and last week, when I turned it on, a message came up on my computer saying, "The disk you have inserted contains no volumes that mac osx can read. Initialize, ignore, or eject". Called Buffalo Tech's customer service and they said, "You could try Disk Warrior and if that doesn't work send it to a disk data recovery service." Well I shelled out $100 for the Disk Warrior software and guess what? It did nothing. So now I'm either going to be out another $300-$600, IF I should be so lucky that my data isn't lost forever. So a $150 hard drive has now turned into a $250-$850 dollar hard drive AND is utterly USELESS to boot... all in less than 4 months!!!!! 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Failed Twice By Alisa C Placas I was looking for a drive to use as my mac's Time Machine backup and was directed to this drive by a third party sales rep. It worked OK for a while, but eventually stopped running Time Machine and became unmountable. Disk Utility was not even able to erase and reformat it. I got an RMA from Buffalo Tech and they replaced it. The exact same thing happened to the second drive. My only option is to replace it again through Buffalo. I do not want this drive as I have no faith in it any longer and I am also out a great deal of time, frustration and the costs to ship both drives back to the manufacturer. May be the "green" drive to get right now By Snap, Crackle and Pop If you're looking for a low power drive, the Western Digital WD10EADS is one of the best options currently. It has by far the lowest idle and active power consumption statistics. That, not surprisingly, helps it run cooler than other drives as well. There is some performance loss, though most users will probably not notice. For detailed stats, look up the Winter 2008 Hard Drive Guide at Tom's Hardware. (Though you may notice how quiet and cool it is!) Also, note that this is the OEM or Bulk version of the drive, with no SATA data cable or power adapter, or screws if your system uses them. UPDATE 2-2010: Western Digital has recently introduced a new WDxxEARS series of Caviar Green drives, with a number of enhancements. And, they are priced attractively. But they come with a wrinkle that means you'll need to do some thinking about whether this earlier WDxxEADS series drive is still better for you. The WDxxEARS series uses more dense 500GB platters - so a 1TB drive has just two platters, and drives up to 2TB are available - and has 64MB of cache. So far so good. But the wrinkle is that WD is using the new series to transition to 4KB sectors on the hard drive; they call it WD Advanced Format technology. For some users - those using Windows XP, or those trying to clone a drive to the new drive - Advanced Format presents substantial issues, so the EADS seriews may still be the drive to use. For those doing fresh installs for Vista, Windows 7 or Mac systems, be sure to look at the newer drives. Read the reviews for the new drives for more info and some suggestions for where to get still more info. PACKAGING UPDATE 2-2010: Read some of the recent reviews for comments about the completely unacceptable packaging that Amazon is using to ship these hard drives. You may want to consider choosing another source for the drive. 74 of 80 people found the following review helpful. Why you need this drive By Heather Lion For those that don't know why you want a low-power drive: It's not just for the environment or your electricity bill--those are just added bonuses. A hard drive can generate a lot of heat inside of your system. This means that (a) your fans will have to blow faster (and thus your computer gets significantly louder), but also that the rest of your computer (CPU, graphics card, etc) are operating at a higher heat. This means that they are running at a lower efficiency rate, as well as with an increased risk of failure. Long story short, your computer will run quieter, faster, and more efficiently, and will also last longer with fewer failures. This particular drive runs faster than a lot of low-power drives, and has been incredibly reliable. It's 7200 rpm and 32mb cache are rather good specs, especially compared to other drives out there--make sure you check those two specs before you buy! The price also cannot be beat. It unfortunately doesn't come with any cables, so I would strongly suggest getting this (as I did): Cables Unlimited Serial ATA Cable Kit. It comes with both the sata connector for your motherboard as well as a power adapter to power your drive from a 4-pin molex cable from your power supply. ----Update regarding WD's changed rpm specs---- WD has changed the specs on the drive since my last review, from 7200rpm to "IntelliPower," and many other websites speculate as to what that exactly means. Some say it runs closer to 5400rpm, other say it's a variable rate between 5400 and 7200. I don't know what it is, but I did want to weigh in on performance. I also have a 5400rpm drive in the same machine, and a proper 7200rpm drive in another machine. This green drive definitely outperforms the 5400 drive, and I personally do not notice the difference between this and the other 7200rpm drive when running Acronis backup or Photoshop/Gigapixel work. Apparently this has to do

FANTASTIC SMALL USB 3.0 DRIVE By stevenpeter I just opened this drive, hooked it to my Apple iMac, opened Time Machine -- and the mac reformatted the drive and started the 450gb back up. It took about 4 hours to complete (and i was using USB 2) and now I am safe, should anything ever happen to my mac. The physical size of this drive is very impressive..... less that 2 decks of cards. Love that there is no power cord, just the USB. Yes, the usb cable is rigid and short, but that is an easy fix. The drive is silent, has a small light to show activity. I would highly recommend this drive to anyone needed inexpensive, compact, efficient back-up. Remember... there are only two kind of computer users out there: one that have lost data and ones that are about to. BACK UP!!!! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Luis R. By Luis R.
