Peremsky I have been waiting ages for a large capacity hard drive that runs at 7,200rpm and this Caviar black has most definitely answered my call. Lets look at the technical specs first... As Borat would say, They're very nice! (bet you didn't expect a lame Borat reference did you?) It features: Two Processors, Four 500GB platters, 64MB of cache and a dual mode actuator system that, (to make a long story short) enables precision head tracking that speeds up your seek times. Plus like most Western Digital hard drives, this one features a No-Touch loader, meaning the read and write head never comes in contact with any of the platters, increasing the life span of the hard drive. Now to benchmarks. (all testing performed on an Intel 2.4Ghz Q6600 paired with XFX 780i Sli Mobo and recorded in HDTach) First off, this thing has the fastest sustained writes and reads of any standard magnetic drive I've used. (or heard of for that matter) Mine exceeded 113MB/s each compared to my previous 1.5TB Barracuda that scored 99MB/s sustained reads and 84MB/s sustained writes. That gives the Caviar Black about 16 and 30 percent faster sustained reads and writes respectively! Random Access Reads and Writes were also faster for the Caviar Black at 7.4ms and 5ms respectively. Compared to the Barracuda's 12.9 and 5.4. Burst Read speeds for the Caviar Black were 215.1MB/s compared to the Barracuda's 209.1MB/s Also, just for fun I compared the Caviar Black's benchmarks against my 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor. (Thinking the VelociRaptor would totally own it) I was pretty shocked at the results. Raptor sustained read/write: 99.1MB/s and 98.2MB/s Caviar sustained read/write: 113.3MB/s and 113.1MB/s (It actually beat it) Raptor random access read/write: 7.3ms and 3.3ms Caviar random access read/write: 7.5ms and 4.9ms (Pretty close here) Raptor Burst read: 250.3MB/s Caviar Burst read: 215.1MB/s (O well, can't win em all ;) Not bad considering this thing is running about 27 percent slower than the Raptor. :D Bottom line is, the Caviar Black 2TB is a hard drive running nearly as fast (or faster) than a VelociRaptor for about only a hundred bucks more and its six and a half times the capacity. Is it worth it to you? Stay away for now. 2TB version. By nr2134 Its not often that I take the time to write a review on a product, but I had to do it for this drive. I have been in the IT field for over 20 years and though I have seen it all. I purchased 3 of the 2TB Black drives in the last month. One here on Amazon and the rest, somewhere else. Out of the 3, 1 was DOA, 2nd died in 3 hours and the last, had so many bad sectors that WD's own software ran for 13 hours and it finally gave up and errored out. This is completely unacceptable in this day and age. How can they be releasing 3TB drives when they have huge issues with the 2TB offerings. It almost seems like they are having problems with the latest batch reading through some review on other sites. I also purchased a couple of the 640GB drives and these Im extremely happy with. Even the 2TB Green drives have been good to me. Out of the 8 that I purchased this year, only one had to be replaced, which I consider acceptable. Thankfully, WD's RMA process is painless, but there is a catch. When you receive your replacement drive, it only comes with a 90-Day Warranty. WD, can explain this to me. How can you reduce the warranty on this drive from 5 years to 90 days when its your QC issues that are causing this high of a failure rate that makes the IBM Deathstar look good. Romero Good news for those that have been frustrated by this drive and for those that hoped this drive would live up to expectations. Here are the simple and easy solutions. 1) "I get an error when I try to save large files." You can convert this drive to NTFS in a matter of minutes. Good news for those of you that may have already loaded data onto this external HDD because the conversion to NTFS leaves existing data intact. Complete step by step instructions in a moment but first, when you come to the step that reads:"Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt"; make sure you right-click and open the command prompt as administrator. OK, here's the link: [...] (By the way, I assume Toshiba set the file system to FAT32 for backward compatibility to older OS and Macs. FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4Gb, and because video files can exceed 4Gb, then this is one reason to convert to NTFS.) 2) "The drive shuts itself down after 5 or 30 minutes." This is not bug or a feature of the Toshiba external HDD. This is a symptom of Windows power settings. The remedy lies with configuring Windows Advanced Power settings, which is a piece of cake. You can set your drives to spin for hours on end, just follow the instructions found here: [...]. 3) "Windows does not recognize the Toshiba HDD when connected using an eSATA cable." (If you don't know, SATA is blazing fast compared to a USB connection and the 'e' in eSATA stands for 'External'.) Update Windows for the latest drivers and the drive will be plug and play except for ... 4) If you want to be able to unplug the drive without headaches then you can turn off write caching. Write speed is degraded but you can dismount the drive without shutting down your machine. Toshiba Desktop External Hard Drive By Michael Halbert Over all the device is great, but there are a few things to point out about the device. The hard drive is formatted in FAT32 instead of NTFS which limits the size of files to a mere 4 GB. So I advise reformatting the device to NTFS as soon as you finish the installation process. This will allow you to have files larger than 4 GB on the hard drive. One complaint against Amazon is that they fail to mention that the hard drive has only a 5400 RPM and 8 MB of cache. They need to update the product description to include this information. Other external hard drives have 7200 RPM and up to 32 MB of cache. This is important information to know when purchasing an external hard drive. The device is pleasantly quiet and only make a brief noise when turned on. As a plus, rather than an annoying blinking bright light, the device has a soft dimming in and out light telling you it is doing something. This device does not have a fan, so it is advisable to keep it in a cool environment. Deaubl I liked the sleek look of this drive but after moving part of my video files to it, I found out it shuts down after 30 minutes of not being accessed. This is not acceptable. I agree to what others have said -- it is a backup drive ONLY. Don't expect to use it as an accessible hard drive at any given point. I just spent 2 weeks rebuilding my RAID, restoring and re-backing up my data after the drives corrupted all my data. This is the 4th set of drives for me. They are upgrading them to the 2003 version that has the set 72000RPM speed to eliminate the issue with drive timing issues. **Update 1/10/2010** Western Digital swapped out my old drives for the newer version which seem to handle the read/writes and spin rates much better. I had to rebuild the RAID for each drive replacement and copy my data over for backup (about 1.5TB including some large video files exceeding 15GB). Transfers were seamless and rebuilds went without a hitch. The new version is WD2002FYPS-02W3B0. Make sure you get this firmware version when you order. They do seem to fix the issues I was having. They have only been running for a few weeks and time will tell if they end up with the same read errors the older version drives had, but I feel better about these. Original review: I purchased 3 of these drives to create a RAID5 array to give me 4TB of storage for my work and personal files. I immediately had issues with the drives due to spin rates and compatibility with RAID controllers. It took work from both the RAID controller manufacturer (Areca) and WD to get firmware updates to allow these drive to sync their spin rates with the controllers read/write requests. During that time, I had the drives fail 5 times. Once we got the firmware issues resolved, I thought all was well. Now about 6 months later, 2 more drives have failed within 3 weeks of each other with the same read/write issues I had previously. I have confirmed that it has been the WD firmware each time. WD refuses to acknowledge issues on their end, so it has been up to me to resolve all of the firmware issues. I think Areca wrote several firmware updates due to my working with them on these drives and their controller to try to work around WD insistence it wasn't their issue. Finally, Areca and WD got together and WD finally came out with the correct firmware to fix the spin rates and timing to work in RAID. I can't afford to pay as much as I did for these drives and have them fail more frequently than any other drives I have owned or sold. They are supposed to be enterprise drives and provide millions of hours of up time. I'm not getting thousands of hours of up time without failures. These drives had manufacturing issues from the start with all the posts I have found with similar issues as mine. This is not what I expect from what are supposed to the the flagship of drives from WD. WD 2 TB Hard Drives - Five By Barry Shuler I purchased five of these 2 TB Western Digital Data Center Rated Hard Drives for a new Synology DS509+ Network Attached Storage Server I bought for my small business. After about two weeks up and running, so far so good. They are extremely quiet, and generate just a small amount of heat. The variable speed capability works great. When there is no read-write activity, the drives are very quiet and consume less energy. When read-write activity is high, they are only marginally noisier. Burns These drives have performed flawlessly in a NetGear ReadyNAS Pro. It is necessary for the NAS's firmware to disable the 'green' function of these drives to prevent repetitive head parking (Load Cycle Count). Roberts I bought this to try an idea I had, running a virtual machine from an external esata drive. My lenovo has a 128gb SSD drive, too small for a decent virtual setup, so I needed something external that was powerful and fast. I have been using WD Raptors in an old server for years with excellent results. So when I saw the Velociraptor and the great price on amazon I bought it to see. A great call, the performance is excellent, and it runs my VMs as if they were internal drives. Fast, quiet, solid By rsinj My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time. I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price. The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I won't have to rebuild the system drives from scratch. I know that the motherboards in my machines cannot make use of the 6Gb throughput, however, these drives are definitely faster than what they're replacing - older WD drives which indicate they are 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specs on the older drives indicate performance shouldn't be all that different, but it is, and for the better. I won't question it. The drive indicates you can jumper pins 5 and 6 to limit it to 3Gb, but I didn't understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it's working well. WD Blue 1T Drive - So far so good. By Fred Wampler I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow. The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I have loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around 3 weeks I'll assume it will not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I'll update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that a few failures were being reported. Not the long-term ones but the more likely out of the box ones. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain). UPDATE: OK. I put the case back together. The drive is not silent but it is pretty quiet. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Very nice. No problems with the drive at all. Pratdesaba This is a very small case (just as big as the 2.5" HDD it encloses) without any cooling fan or antishock protection that would make it for the long haul... it's not for any road warrior, it works best for technicians or someone who want to use an old spare HDD left out from a notebook or may need to fix a bad HDD from a crashed notebook. Don't take it along with your gear since it won't protect your HDD that much or use it for long periods of time since the HDD can get very hot and there's no ventilation or fan but the good part is that it does work as expected with stable USB 2.0 data speeds. 25 of 33 people found the following review helpful. USB power no good for drives over 30gb By Texan I bought this enclosure for a 100gb 2.5" hard drive I had. Problem is, apparently the power supplied by the USB port is not always sufficient. I have several PCs at home, and the drive would not stay connected on any of them if I used a USB 2.0 port (drive would constantly disconnect). One of my PCs has only USB 1.0, and the drive did stay connected long enough for me to format the drive. This enclosure seems to be more stable if you plug into USB 1 port, but that really defeats the advantage of having a USB 2.0 drive. When reading the "troubleshooting" section of the manual, it states that drives over 30gb might not have sufficient power from the USB port. It also states that any drive that draws more than 500A cannot be powered by the USB port. You also can't use a hub, unless it is self powered, and the drive has a dedicated 5V 500A supplied to it. Win XP - don't use disk - good product but needs better instructions By Bone Sabrent has been good to me to date so far. I have had several products of theirs and each time I have been pleased, but the instructions for this product are seriously lacking. I believe they were written before Win XP ever came out and I have no clue if this will work with Vista, you'll have to read another review for that one. It couldn't be any simpler of a device to put together though. Open box, insert 2.5" laptop HDD and then slide together. Insert holding screws (they give you a little screw driver for this as well) connect the cable (double end goes to PC, you need 2 open USB ports on PC) plug other cable end into unit and it'll power up and your PC will take a moment to recognize it then it's off to the races. Transfer rates will be limited by the HDD that you place in the device. I transferred over 12 gigs in like 25 minutes with a 5400rpm old as heck 20gig laptop HDD (yeah it's a 20gig, it's from like 2001 out of my old gateway laptop from when I was in the military). The only thing I would like to see different with this device is a better set of instruction. If you are familiar with Sabrent though you will know that XP typically doesn't need a driver installed as they use standardized equipment and so on. Basically this is the best bang for the buck. This drive has same characteristics of Seagate Barracuda LP 2 TB 5900RPM SATA 3 GB/s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive ST32000542AS-Bare Drive which was prone to click of death, This drive however did not exhibit that issue till now, it comes with CC34 firmware and has warranty till AUG of 2015. Seagate did not have any new firmware update for the drive as of date, not that this drive needs any firmware updates but I always check it to make sure I have the latest firmware for the drive. The drive is a retail kit, which means you will get a SATA cable, SATA power cable and screws plus a CD and documentation. Excellent Hard Drive By Rich in Nebraska I am very happy with this hard drive. Seagate Disc Wizard worked great duping my old hard drive after I created a boot disc to run it from. The retail kit is worth the extra money for the 5 year warranty, plus it was shipped in the well padded retail box from Seagate inside the shipping box. Siaw I had some reservations initially when purchasing this drive due to the large number of bad reviews out there. Upon receiving mine I stress tested it using Seagate's own SeaTools and used it on a desktop system for a couple weeks before deploying it in our home server, and so far it has been running great. Definitely a cool and quiet running drive, offering fairly good performance at a good price. I can imagine why people would be antsy about Seagate about the 7200.11 and 1.5TB Barracuda LP fiasco, but for the moment mine does seem to be going fine. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe a few months down the road my unit will run into issues, but amongst all of the drive manufacturers, I do fine Seagate's RMA process to be the most painless to deal with as well.
