Basically, I prefer this over my Thermaltake for one reason: The ease of swapping drives in and out of it when I need to. Right now it's sitting in my entertainment unit with my media PC, and it contains my entire life collection of stuff. It may not be the most attractive or the most durable. But if you need flexibility there really are no better out there. If you want something that's built like a tank and looks like a rock concert then get the Thermaltake N0012USU Max 4 Active Cooling 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 eSATA Hard Drive Enclosure instead.UPDATE - 10/9/2011:Yes, I still have this enclosure. I actually had forgotten about it until recently. I moved it from my entertainment unit to just below my iMac, and I had it persistently connected and powered on since the iMac's purchase in late 2010. I mentioned before that I had both this and the Thermaltake I referenced above, right...well, the Thermaltake bit the dust two weeks ago. Not specifically "Dying" per se, but it started making a very horrible noise. AS though something were contacting the fan repeatedly. Like a rattle but not a rattle. Even taking it apart didn't fix the issue. Fortunately the drive was not affected by this, but the noise was just unbearable. The Antec, on the other hand, still chugs along without an issue. Had all sorts of dust on the inside of it, but otherwise solid and stable. No problems whatsoever. Considering the general build quality, color me impressed with this enclosure. Quiet, cool, fast By Dr. Klamm My house doesn't have the best air conditioning, so I've long been looking for a decent active-cooled hard drive enclosure. After reading a favorable review of the MX-1 at Silent PC Review, I decided to buy two of these enclosures (paired with two very quiet WD Caviar SE16 drives) to use for backup and music storage with my MacBook Pro. I'm quite pleased. The drives run cool and relatively quietly -- while they aren't silent, the hum of the fan tends to blend in to the ambient noise of my study. And if you use the eSATA interface, you'll find the performance to be equivalent to that of an internal drive, which is nothing short of spectacular if you've previously only used Firewire or USB2 drive enclosures. The MX-1 enclosure isn't quite perfect. As the product photo makes clear, the enclosure is not particularly attractive; it reminds me, in fact, of a VHS tape rewinder, and it's almost as bulky. You'll probably want to tuck your enclosure away and out of plain view if looks matter to you. Also, the inclusion of a Firewire 400 interface would have made the enclosure more versatile and useful, particularly to Mac users, though it's hard to fault Antec for this omission when few PCs are equipped with Firewire ports. Finally, I would have preferred a slightly larger power switch, since you typically need to find the power switch by feel rather than by sight. Bear in mind that these are only quibbles; the MX-1 enclosure gets the important things right: cooling, noise, and performance. A note on assembly: one of the screws can be slightly tricky to position, and it helps to have a pair of screw-holding tweezers when you're putting this together. If you have an eSata port on the back of your computer (directly on the motherboard) it works even faster. But if you hope to use the included eSata back-panel bracket that plugs into a regular sata port in your motherboard, be aware that sata is not eSata, and this *will not work*

The problem is that it simply does not handle the full power range required by the specs. The first version of this device I got refused to run my drive (a solid state drive using about 6W of power) via FW. I sent it back and was told its FW ports were bad. The replacement has FW ports that work --- but that STILL don't support the full 7W that FW supplies. The situation on the USB side isn't much better --- a low-power drive that should run off a single USB connection requires two USB connection to get it spinning. All this may seem like so much technical mumbo-jumbo to you, the reader, but it matters. When you buy a drive and insert it into an enclosure like this, you just expect things to work --- you plug it into your computer and life is good. You don't expect that things will sorta appear to work until you write a lot of data to the disk, at which point it disconnects from your computer because the drive doesn't have the power it needs and has reset itself. You expect that, unless you are buying some really weird drive, standard 2.5 inch drives will just work off a single USB or FW connection. AcomData seem well aware of the power limitations of this drive --- the manual that comes with it devotes most of its pages to explaining how to use the cables they gave to "top up" the FW connection with extra power from USB. Apart from the fact of WTF should I be doing this, none of their suggestions ever worked for me. My recommendation -- skip this. Life is too short to dick around with products that don't properly support standards (in this case, power standards) and that appear to work and then stop work apparently randomly. 21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Nice build quality 2.5-inch disk enclosure By Abester I have the Acomdata Tango Pro 2.5-inch SATA disk enclosure with USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and 800 I/O ports on the back. It also has a small 5v DC power jack just in case your I/O port DC power is marginal or weak. I needed the various I/O ports as I have a number of different PC's and Macs where I plan to use this enclosure. I tested the Acomdata and my disk on all of them and none required that I supply 5v DC to the enclosure. The enclosure does not ship with a 5v DC wall wart adapter but you'll probably never need it anyway. Mine shipped with 1-meter (3-feet) long FW400, FW800, and an incorrect USB 2.0 cable. The Acomdata supplied USB cable came with a rather large type-B connector typically used to attach to a printer. The enclosure needs a Mini-USB style connector. No big deal as I happened to have the correct cable from another project. I'm using the enclosure to house my 128GB 2.5-inch OCZ brand SATA Solid-State Disk. Installation was a snap but I highly recommend having a very small philips screw driver handy as the back panel screws on the enclosure are pretty small. You unscrew the two back panel screws then push on the I/O port connectors which slides the entire assembly out from the front of the case. Slide your 2.5-inch SATA disk onto the SATA connector and secure the disk from the bottom four mounting holes using the Acomdata supplied screws. Slide the assembly back into the case and secure it from the back panel using the two tiny philips screws. Fit and finish are very good on this enclosure and the back panel tolerances are a bit tight but if you align everything just right, it will go back together perfectly. I tested my enclosure with the OCZ 2.5-Inch SSD on three PC's and three Macs using USB 2.0, FW400, and FW800. It worked perfectly on all the computers including a 5 year old HP tower PC via USB 2.0 and FW400, 2 year old Dell tower PC via USB 2.0, and a 2 year old Lenovo laptop via USB 2.0. Great Hard Drive for Raid 5 Setup By Brian's Reviews I built a Linux Raid Server using 4 - 2tb Hitachi HD32000 Hard Drives in Raid 5 configuration. I then used two Seagate 250gb in Raid 1 for the Linux OS. This setup works great. I wanted to use the Seagate 1.5tb but there are problems with the firmware and Raid 5 configurations. The Hitachi's on the other hand have worked perfectly. Nice in my Drobo Raid: Affordable 2TB 7200RPM By R. Auger This drive is a latecomer in the 2TB arena and doesn't have many reviews, but it is a well loved contender. I put several of these in a Drobo Raid Enclosure and they work extremely well, maxing out the claimed read/write speeds of the enclosure. This drive is the only affordable 7200rpm 2TB drive. They also start up quickly; when you've got four of them in one enclosure, this really matters. Because of this, a lot of people buy these for raids. The green drives are popular, but the WD and Seagates seem to have a lot of trouble running in raid configurations without flashing the firmware. They can have varying RPMs from eachother set at the factory, not good at all. Hitachi's are a bit noisy, my only complaint. But a nice throaty sound at least. Be sure to look up the firmware in your enclosure or desktop and make sure that it fits a drive this modern and large. 32 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Noisier than my whole system By Pedro Corbett I have just purchased this drive and it produces more noise when accessing data randomly than my 3 case fans plus CPU fan plus video card fan plus my other 3 HD's TOGETHER. What's worse, Hitachi simply removed the option to alter the AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management) parameters from their Feature Tool utility since its version 2.13. If anybody else was unfortunate enough to purchase this drive, here's the solution: get the freeware utility WinAAM or the more sophisticated HD Tune (not freeware), boot the system with the HD set to IDE mode in the BIOS (AAM can't be altered in SATA/AHCI/RAID mode) and set the AAM value to 128. There will be NO noticeable performance penalty (I did A LOT of testing with HD Tach) and the absurd noise will disappear. I tried contacting Hitachi's support about this but they didn't seem to even bother reading my message and sent me a standard copy and paste reply. Ketcham I have used many different external hard disk enclosures over the years. I have had varying results... cases that have melted, cases that had drive capacity limits, etc. Eventually I found the Acomdata Enclosures at Fry's. I used their older, heavy duty cases many times. They are just excellent. Quiet, with no fan, but with excellent cooling. Easy to assemble / disassemble. I recently started using their lower cost and lighter weight Samba Enclosures. My previous experience is with the USB/PATA/SATA case. They work great. Same excellent attributes as the heavy duty cases. Today I received four of the items described on this page. From the Amazon product description, it looks like the perfect, universal disk drive enclosure - USB/Firewire/PATA IDE/SATA. It is not. In spite of what the Amazon product description says, there is no PATA IDE capability. The Acomdata web page has the description right, so I assume Amazon simply blew it on this one. Still an excellent case - since it is not universal - 4 stars instead of 5. But, if you need the PATA IDE capability, look elsewhere. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best Firewire 400 Enclosure I've found for the price By Joe I've tried 4 different USB/Firewire SATA enclosures, and so far this has been the best one. I've had no problems in the 6 months I've been using it with my older Mac Mini, and Ibook G4. If you have a newer Mac, get a Firewire 800 (1394 b), otherwise this works great for my purposes, and the Firewire 400 is much faster than USB for doing bulk file transfers. Installation is a breeze, the aluminum shell keeps the drive cool, and it is tight so there is no vibration or amplification of drive noise. The dual color LED status light is a plus, instead of just a blinking single color LED... You can tell if there is a lot of I/O activity, or if the drive is sleeping just by looking at the LED color. I've tried the Macally enclosure that is similar price, and it would not power a 2TB 7200 rpm drive properly due to a lower amp power supply... so that got returned. I've gone through 2 Rosewill RX81-MP enclosures in less than 2 years... I loved them, but they don't last. I also have an ICY DOCK enclosure that I think is great, but it cost me 2x the price, and it doesn't perform any better than the Acomdata enclosure... It also amplifies any drive noise, but thankfully I'm using Samsung Spinpoint 2TB drives, and they are very quiet and cool running. I wrote this review while placing an order for a 2nd Acomdata enclosure, and I'll buy more unless someone comes up with something better, but for now, this is the best price/performance/design I've found so far. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the greatest of enclosures.... By Arun K. Seetharam This is a nice looking enclosure, not so compact. Its aluminium body handles heat very well....with a fanless operation. Very easy to fit the hard drive in and fasten it to the chasis. But of what use are these if the whole chasis is mounted on plascic ends. the rear cap which is a low quality plastic holds the whole heavy 3.5" drive. And the screws, mount into a plastic core. What this means is, dont screw it tight, it will remove the thread inside the plastic core and thats it...the screw keeps rotating. Here is the most important thing. I mounted a 2TB hard drive. And had to move/backup large amounts of data. The indicator LED glows in 3 colors. Blue, orange and red. Red means dead. Locked up, you have to switch off the hard drive before you can do anything with the dialog box/ progress indicator. 4 times dead red on Vista....I thought...Aaah well it may be the darn vista thing....so I moved to XP Pro.....same problem. Dead Red first attempt to copy. The data transfer is not reliable. The applications hangup and I used to blame the app. Like for Eg.

Romero Good news for those that have been frustrated by this drive and for those that hoped this drive would live up to expectations. Here are the simple and easy solutions. 1) "I get an error when I try to save large files." You can convert this drive to NTFS in a matter of minutes. Good news for those of you that may have already loaded data onto this external HDD because the conversion to NTFS leaves existing data intact. Complete step by step instructions in a moment but first, when you come to the step that reads:"Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt"; make sure you right-click and open the command prompt as administrator. OK, here's the link: [...] (By the way, I assume Toshiba set the file system to FAT32 for backward compatibility to older OS and Macs. FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4Gb, and because video files can exceed 4Gb, then this is one reason to convert to NTFS.) 2) "The drive shuts itself down after 5 or 30 minutes." This is not bug or a feature of the Toshiba external HDD. This is a symptom of Windows power settings. The remedy lies with configuring Windows Advanced Power settings, which is a piece of cake. You can set your drives to spin for hours on end, just follow the instructions found here: [...]. 3) "Windows does not recognize the Toshiba HDD when connected using an eSATA cable." (If you don't know, SATA is blazing fast compared to a USB connection and the 'e' in eSATA stands for 'External'.) Update Windows for the latest drivers and the drive will be plug and play except for ... 4) If you want to be able to unplug the drive without headaches then you can turn off write caching. Write speed is degraded but you can dismount the drive without shutting down your machine. Toshiba Desktop External Hard Drive By Michael Halbert Over all the device is great, but there are a few things to point out about the device. The hard drive is formatted in FAT32 instead of NTFS which limits the size of files to a mere 4 GB. So I advise reformatting the device to NTFS as soon as you finish the installation process. This will allow you to have files larger than 4 GB on the hard drive. One complaint against Amazon is that they fail to mention that the hard drive has only a 5400 RPM and 8 MB of cache. They need to update the product description to include this information. Other external hard drives have 7200 RPM and up to 32 MB of cache. This is important information to know when purchasing an external hard drive. The device is pleasantly quiet and only make a brief noise when turned on. As a plus, rather than an annoying blinking bright light, the device has a soft dimming in and out light telling you it is doing something. This device does not have a fan, so it is advisable to keep it in a cool environment. Deaubl I liked the sleek look of this drive but after moving part of my video files to it, I found out it shuts down after 30 minutes of not being accessed. This is not acceptable. I agree to what others have said -- it is a backup drive ONLY. Don't expect to use it as an accessible hard drive at any given point. But I bought two, and put in a RAID1 mirror config, in a 8-drive raid box with 2 x multilane infiniband interfaces and a RocketRaid card. The 64MB cache is noticeable, totally. It is not hype. On average, I get 100MB/sec copying across a gigabit network in the LAN from one machine to this RAID volume. In a similar test (using the same source machine, to a volume of 750GB AAKS', I get ~82MB/sec across the wire. Again, the cache is noticeable in my tests. I am amazed at the quality of this drive. I recommend these drives to anyone who needs to use a RAID config, and needs capacity, and reliability. I only use WD, period. I currently own 46 hard drives, all WD. The only WD hard drive I ever had fail, was a green 750GB one. The older AAKS series was phenomenal, and these are the new ones to get! By Matthew Marlowe I'm not normally a fan of SATA drives, I've worked extensively with SAS/SCSI drives for servers/etc for the last 20 years and only used ATA/SATA when required. Still, I've had some projects come up recently where the only option was SATA and high capacity was required. After some bad experiences with the WDC Cavier Black 2TB, I gave the RE4 a try. It's been great. I've now had 5 of them running for the last six months and the SMART monitoring reports still show the drives as in almost new condition...no errors, no need for sector changes, no unusual increases of load cycle counts, etc. Performance has also been very good....surprisingly good for a mere 7200rpm device. Not to mention, the drives seem to work nicely in both software and hardware raid. I'll probably end up buying another 5 of them soon. I'll be very happy if I can keep the failure rate to under 4%/yr....this historically is a good rate for SATA/ATA. I'm not sure what to think about WDC.....I generally prefer seagate, but the RE4 drives certainly seems to be able to back up its claim as an enterprise SATA drive. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Solid Performer at a Fair Price By P. Levine I bought this to replace a Seagate backup drive that lacked enough room for drive images. The WD5003 is quiet and speedy and comes with a 5-year Enterprise warranty. No problems with it at all. Buyers have been complaining about Amazon's poor bare-drive packaging in many of the reviews I've read. The packaging was horrible ... only 2 airbags, one top of the drive the other on the side of the drive. Bottom of the drive was touching the box and the drive was sliding all over banging the 3 unprotected sides. WD specifies if approved packaging is not used then it will void the warranty. I seriously doubt this is approved packaging. I did not even try to use the drive, I immediately RMA'ed it back to amazon. Drives shipped in this manor do not last long. I usually buy from the egg place but according to their reviews they also ship with poor packaging and have constant DOA drives. I posted a "customer" image of what the packaging looked like. 35 of 38 people found the following review helpful. WD 640 Black fastest 7200 RPM drive on the planet By D. W. Dallam These drives have been tested to be the fastest 7200 RPM drives on the market. If you do a search, you'll find tests that compare the 640 black to the Raptor, and they are within 10% or less of the speed of the raptor, and on some tests, pretty much dead even. This review compares the Raptor 150 to the 640 Black, and it compares everything--write, read, transfer, sustained transfer, small file copy, large file, etc: [...] If you buy two of these drives and run them in RAID 0, you get smokin' faster transfer rates than a single Raptor. The upside is that this drive is 80 bucks compared to a raptor at 300. Also, the largest raptor is 300GB while this one is 640GBs. So you get 1.2TBs of space for 160.00 or about half of what a single raptor costs. Also, the Caviar Blacks are the same build quality as the Enterprise drives, so you get the 5 year warranty. The only difference in this drive and the Enterprise drives is that the latter are tuned for RAID, while the 640 is tuned for desktop use. The tuning for RAID lowers error recovery to 7 seconds, while the error recovery on the 640, like all desktop drives, is a much longer 30+ seconds. When using RAID, if your drive does happen to find a fault and try to recover it, after about 7 seconds the RAID controller will simply say, "Nope, bad sectors" mark the sectors bad and keep going. They are tuned this way to maximize performance on high volume servers where speed is more important than waiting for a non RAID drive to recover information. Jentsch This drive was highly recommended as the fastest drive available before going up to the 10krpm Velociraptor series, and after putting both in my system, I believe the claims are true. This drive runs quietly, where I can't even hear drive accesses like I can with other drives. That's one of the most noticeable differences between this and the Velociraptor, aside from the speed, of course. So, what is the speed difference between this Caviar Black drive and the Velociraptor? I ran HD Tune 2.55 to find out. The test system was a brand new Core i7-920 based system using an ASUS P6T-Deluxe motherboard with on-board SATA. The 300GB Velociraptor is installed as the system drive, the 640GB Caviar Black as the data drive. Caviar Black 640GB: 50 MB/s min, 109.4 MB/s max, 85.8 MB/s average Access Time: 12.3ms Burst Rate: 127 MB/s Velociraptor 300GB: 74.6 MB/s min, 120 MB/s max, 100.9 MB/s average Access Time: 8.6ms Burst Rate: 188.3 MB/s While the max rates are very close, you'll notice that the min rates are quite different, and the burst rate is even more so. To put these tests into perspective, I also ran HD Tune on my previous system, which is a Pentium 4 3.06GHz Windows XP box with an 80GB Seagate IDE system drive and a 500GB Seagate ST3500641AS SATA drive for data. I won't even post the 80GB's numbers because they are too
