Desktop / Consumer RAID environments - WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are tested and recommended for use in consumer-type RAID applications. (RAID-0 / RAID-1)* *Business Critical RAID Environments – WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are not recommended for and are not warranted for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider WD's Enterprise Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing. Leading the way to green hard drives - WD led the industry in creating a new category of eco-friendly hard drives that use less power and help reduce the world's energy demands one computer user at a time. These drives consume significantly less power than standard drives spinning at 7200 RPM. All WD Caviar Green drives are lead and halogen free, resulting in less pollutants getting into our environment. Beyond the product level, WD's green initiative goes even further focusing on recycling and improving the cleanliness of the air, water and land in the locations surrounding WD facilities. Upgrading your drive is easy - WD Acronis TrueImage, available as a free download on the WD Support site, enables you to copy all your data to a new drive so you don't have to reinstall your operating system to get all the benefits of a new drive. Note: Bare drive does not include any cables or mounting hardware. The WD advantage - WD puts our products through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) prior to any product launch. On average, each new product goes through 600,000 hours of testing. WD also has a detailed Knowledge Base with more than 1,000 helpful articles. You can also call toll-free support 7 days per week in the U.S. and Canada. See the WD Support site for full details. Customer Reviews more useful than 503 480 people have found this review helpful. EE for propeller heads out there, here are some electric EEhead For many discs I have bought 2 TB WD Caviar. I have had excellent results with them on my iMac. I use mainly for storing data when the fast recovery of data is not a consideration. I am more concerned to connect the USB-based platforms when I need data. However, they are also interested in them in terms of power, just because ... well, precisely because they are interested in them. Over the years, I worked my way up the scale storage capacity of the disk hard. How many of you, I was rather shocked at the way these older models that warm. I swear, you can fry an egg on some of them. I never felt comfortable with their life, probably for fear of being burned. Fortunately, no one has done. When the Caviar Black product line coming out (1 TB was when I won the first release), I was quite fascinated by the power reduction claimed in the electronics industry, heat is the greatest enemy of the components. Usually halve every 10 degrees C temperature increase life of components. The Caviar feel like a way to get a more reliable drive, if the energy saving numbers actually panned out. I took one of the drives in to work where I want to test gear at my disposal. Especially I have some very good Tektronix current probes, which allows me to measure DC and AC power. I built a little cable that leads me to +12 V and +5 V lines, so that my current probes to the wires can pinch, so to measure power consumption. I connected the two power leads for power supplies, so I could also vary, the two voltages. This way I can just see and measure current consumption of the drive, drive I exercise. I get more accurate measurements in this way you can use a simple watt-meter that you can rarely see what the fractional watt Because I can not (actually, do not know how) scale embedding images in this review, all I can do to verbally describe my observations. My tests are far from complete, but they give you a good idea of how much power these devices draw, and when they attract. * If the disc just sits there doing nothing but spinning is +12 V 0.24A power consumption +5 V and the drain is 0.13A. It comes down to 4.2 watts in idle. I have not previously measured, high power devices, but I'm willing to bet the Caviar Green takes half the power of traditional hard drives. I would not be surprised if 1 / 3 of power. * If a surge, the second stop drawing all power supplies. It is a convenient way to power devices on and off. I would suggest turning off the power to the +5 V rail loop to turn off the +5 V supply with a single PFET is easier than for the +12 V rail * When the device is first turned on, +5 V pull a nearly constant 500 -600 mA. During a 12 V ramp from 200 mA to 600 mA and continued until after about 10 seconds, so when the plant is fully operational. At this point, turning +12 V peak current drops to a minimum), current 0.24A. It does not vary much after that, regardless of disk activity (erase, write, read, etc..) On the other hand, +5 V stream is recorded. It's pretty clear that the servo head is driven from power at +5 V and +12 V. It is difficult to describe verbally the current 5 V, but I will say that the average flow during head movement activities is about 400 mA. When there is no activity, the current is approximately +5 V 0.13A. When the drive is doing what he does, then go down to 4.2 watts in standby, I mentioned above. If you are a designer food, you should be aware that these currents are DC I quote averages are, and you have a "hash" of alternating currents, which result from the list of averages, I +5 V power a hash of about 300mA PP and chopping 12 V pp can be 400mA * I.
