By Jeff Pittman We have 2 TB drives out there for less money, and if all you need is a huge space, you might consider one of these. Value added in this package is the backup software that comes with the device (in fact, delivered straight to disk.) WD SmartWare is a backup / restore package, once installed, the machine boots. If MyBook connected via USB port, will constantly monitor activity and make backups in the background as a result almost in real time without any action on your part. It also keeps multiple generations of files (you can choose how many), so you can go back to, say, three versions ago, if you need to download a spreadsheet or other data files. You can also use it on multiple computers. Backups are stored in folders with the same name is created on the PC. I tested it on a laptop Win XP Pro and a laptop computer and Win7 found no system slowdown at all Every time the light flashes on the disc, otherwise the backup can not be seen. The same unit is completely silent. INSTALLATION seriously consider the copy of the software included on the disc on a CD before you do anything. I can imagine situations where you might want to delete everything off the MyBook, and if you do this, you will not need to install the software on another machine (the manual contains instructions on where to look online). Connect the power supply and connect the MyBook to a computer's USB port and turn on the computer, if not already. The MyBook is not power until it is connected to a USB port of a computer, which is really useful - if you turn off the computer, the MyBook with her, then again when you restart your computer. My Win7 machine, the drive quickly, but complain that drivers do not install the drive worked fine, but - I was able to create folders, copy it here and delete things from it using Windows Explorer. My XP machine could see the MyBook and began searching for new hardware wiz. It asked if it could connect to Windows Update to search for drivers. The drive was not visible in Windows Explorer, so I said yes. After a long search for "WD SES Device USB Device", found it and installed what it needs, and the balloon said my new hardware is installed and ready for use. I then installed the software has (somewhat) on both machines without incident by the included WD SmartWare executable file to the drive (blue icon). During installation I was asked to perform my first backup, so I did. When I was with two machines, I probably had two full backups on MyBook, one for each machine. For each computer that supports the MyBook, this is your first base backup and changes will be monitored thereafter NOTE: This is not the disk image. As far as I can see, WD SmartWare not compatible with the creation of disk images and bootable recovery discs, so you must rely on other tools to create that kind of stuff if you want. I have not seen this as an error and that it is sold as a system recovery utility. Saved if it blows up a file or folder, but if the whole team dies you have a lot of other problems to solve before you start to worry about individual files. Of course it is a great place to keep records images, but be aware that the software is not designed to create them. I am regularly asked to be a software update available for the MyBook. Like other reviewers, I found that the installer complains about USB devices connected, whether you are connected or not. The device works well, so I just ignore warnings to work I may have trouble with it later, maybe not. OPERATION It just works. I turned off the MyBook and the edited files, new files, e.
